Nostalgia trip

When I first laid my eyes on this game, I got the big Nintendo DS nostalgia and knew immediately that I had to play it. And, well... I did!
It was pretty much all I hoped it would be!

Super cozy, with some surprisingly real story elements. Cute characters, each with their own personalities and side quests, sprinkled around the map made the world feel really alive. Music and sound design is great, and levels were good from the get-go. Hurray for not having my eardrums blown off! And of course, the visuals are stunning.

Some nitpicking

Keyboard controls were really weird to me. Switched to controller immediately and it was a lot better.

I just really wish the playtime was way longer. I completed 100% in under 7 hours, and that's including a whole bunch of time AFK. You could probably do it in 4 or 5 with not much stress. If there's ever a DLC I'll buy it.

Getting all the achievements is mostly fun, but it gets a little old when the characters you keep running into don't have any more dialogue. Some achievements were also pretty annoying as there's no tracking for them; watering all the plants in particular. It was tedious finding them all. They're difficult to see with the pixelated look of the game, so I had to turn the sharpness up to find the last two.

I also felt kinda mislead by one of the quests, trying to get a camper his watch back. Another NPC mentioned a metal detector for no apparent reason, so I went around looking for that to find the watch. Turns out there is no metal detector, and you don't need one! I really don't know what the point of that line was.

Still not being able to use the phone atop the mountain was kind of a cop-out. I was expecting a mini game or something from the item description.

Lastly, the way the camera moves was a little nauseating some times. It's the regular automatic-camera-weirdness, as well as how I perceive the image as sharper when moving. Kinda messes with my head how it looks when you go from moving to still. Maybe an option to move the camera in increments of pixels could help with that? Idk, just a thought.

Final verdict

Over all, 87/100. Loved it!
Will go camping in the rain and play this on my steam deck in the middle of the night whenever that thing actually gets to market.
