Random friend requests are like advertising, if you just spam them, you pretty much playing the lottery that most people just ignore. Though, if you send them after a great experience, one tends to get better odds of a return partner. Much also depends on how you interact with the person after the request is sent. if there's no interaction, there's a good chance they'll become disinterested or forget you. People like regular updates and memorable interactions, there's an emotional hook there that keeps em coming back.
