Let me start with the fact that this game is just amazing and has so much content.
* 90+ standalone levels
* 6 campaigns
* plenty of weapons, equipment/tools, armor types and trooper classes
And if that isnt enough, you can either replay the campaigns in iron mode (basically a hardcore mode - no level restarts), generate random missions or even check the workshop for player made content.

As for the game itself, you have no direct control of anyone. Instead you have to give directions to your SWAT units, which they will follow exactly as you tell them. If they fail it is probably your fault.

The way I see it, this game allows for 2 main ways of playing it. You can either plan the whole mission out in advance, where you will choose every path, every grenade thrown, each corner they check, which hostage they rescue and in what order they do so etc. Or, if this is not your style you can improvise as you go. Send your stealth troopers sneaky beaky while your main troopers blow up the front door.

This game allows 5 main classes you can choose from:
* pointman - fast unit that uses pistols only
* assaulter - your standard all-rounder that primarily uses ARs and SMGs
* breacher - shotgun SWAT that blows the doors off their hinges. And amazing in combat too
* stealth - highly disciplined unit that can sneak behind the enemy and only fires at your explicit command
* shield - big shield man stop bullet, nuff said
- some missions also give a sniper at your disposal (this is not considered a class)

These classes are unlocked as you go. At first you only have the trusty pointmen, but as you keep playing you unlock the other classes. Each trooper has a name, a nickname, a photograph, and a stats tab. If they die, they stay dead (campaigns only). Their proficiency will increase as their rank advances. By finishing missions you achieve stars, which can be used to unlock new guns, equipment, grenades, armor and shields which greatly increase your chance of success. Lastly, there is a doctrine skill tree, which basically increases your troopers combat knowledge (teach your officers new skills such as using objects as cover, how to stabilize their guns, or new shooting techniques).

For mission variety, it goes from simple stuff like killing baddies and arrest warrants to hostage rescues, VIP escorts and bomb defusals.

So, if you plan on getting this game you should do it now, it is worth every penny.

Oh yeah, and there is online coop too.

>is captain: salvage mission
>starts piloting, all according to plan
>large crew of all types of personnel
>someone breaches into armoury and throws incendium nades
>we stop fire; despite everyone seeing him our little friend keeps claiming it wasnt him
>starts being helpful, we decide to give him a second chance, maybe he was too embaraased to say he ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up?
>reach ruins, I dive alone
>after several mazes and walls cut I find artifact

*10 mins later*

>return to sub, everyone dead or disconnected except our "friend" and another guy
>our "friend" injects me with poison but I manage to kill him before I succumb to injuries
>"Friend" disconnects
>last player alive tries to keep the sub from getting even worse
>looks like the "friend" hid all fuel before attacking me and leaving
>respawn shuttle followed by 3 people fixing the sub over a 2 hours period
>"Friend" rejoins server
>we let him in and kill him on sight; throw him out the airlock so water crushes him
>Finish mission without incident and vote kick him once in lobby

This is just a normal day in this world.

So there was a one way platform + trap block combination. Someone threw a keg, but it got stuck there, didnt go below, near where the flag was located.
I went and grabbed the keg and suicide bombed the wall at last second, and the teammate managed to snatch the flag. Enemies started following the flag guy.
But a builder managed to stall them so the last flag went into our base.
After we won I went home and started to play KAG.

It pains me to say this about my favourite game but...

When the dev team changed I was hopeful because it meant a breath of fresh air and new content. And it did start that way: the new devs brought a lot of amazing features and mechanics into the game as well as a great deal of quality of life improvements the old devs wouldnt have cared about. If only it ended here.

In the past 3 years this has been the biggest bug fest in my library. In fact, this might have become the buggiest game I played in my entire life. As I greatly love this game I gave the new devs the benefit of the doubt, surely in 2 years time they would get the hang of it and iron out all the issues, but no.

Ever since the game changed hands, I have spent 90% of my play time constantly dealing with bugs and issues that would just come with each new 'patch'. And in the 3 years of constantly having to work around bugs only a small fraction of them got fixed, despite them being reported time and time again by the various community members. I am pretty sure in fact the bug forums are just a facade to give the impression there are QA attempts going on. But they have proved time and time again with each update there is no effort being made to fix the the bugs plaguing it. Not the game breaking and not even the trivial bugs as a proof of minimal effort

Major disappointment. If the plethora of bugs that currently plague the game get fixed I will amend the review back to my previous "recommended", but I cannot do so until we get a stable build.

2023 update: Somehow the game is less stable than when I amended the review to a negative. As it will soon be half a decade of bad updates it is probably safe to assume I will never recommend this game to anyone again.
