Thronebreaker is an interesting game to review... it has some glaring flaws as a game. The Gwent backend is surprisingly well suited as a gameplay mechanic, but they adhere so vehemently to Gwent's structure that Thronebreaker becomes a game based on Gwent rather than a game with its own unique gameplay loop, just like how Gwent was only one of many larger systems in Witcher 3.

Despite this, there's a lot of clever uses of Gwent to mix things up and the puzzle matches keep things fresh. The only fault here is that the game is ridiculously easy. So, then, is the game worth a recommendation?

Yes. ♥♥♥♥ yes. Resoundly yes.

As a game, Thronebreaker is not without glaring flaws. As a story, it is almost perfect. Thronebreaker's story is superb, from the realistic spin of your choices to the personalities of characters and even the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ voice acting. It is here that the mastery of CD projekt's writers shines blindingly through to tell you a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good story.

God, how I wish they made this into a series, maybe without Gwent and using a SRPG or flat out Visual Novel system instead. Or, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ makes me hard just thinking about it, a CRPG in the veins of Baldur's Gate or Planescape Torment.

Anyway, do yourself a favor and play this if you've enjoyed the storytelling of the Witcher games because that's Thronebreaker's greatest strength without question. While doing so, rest easy in the knowledge that whatever Cyberpunk 2077 might end up being gameplay-wise, it'll, without doubt, tell a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ phenomenal story, because that seems to be something CD projekt just nails and they're only getting better at it.

Fans of the Witcher universe and those who value storytelling above all else in video games need to do themselves a service and play this or else suffer the shame of ignorance.

I'm going to make this simple for most of you. If you like novels and visual novels, then you'll love this game. Otherwise, you won't.

As you've no doubt read from other reviews the game is very much setup like a visual novel, which aren't popular for whatever reason. Yes, even RPG gamers who are known for generally liking plot-heavy stuff are turned away by the amount here. A lot of people see this as a flaw, but I argue they're small-minded. They should have just realized it wasn't for them and moved on.

From the perspective of a VN game, it's a pretty fantastic story and world with lots of interesting interactions. There's a lot of world building too, more than you see in most games.

Now, yes, it has nothing to do with the original as it's not a direct sequel, however if people bothered to beat the game they'd see that it thematically has a ton to do with the original. The main plot is thematically similar to the original, and the way the world unravels, all weird, alien, and rich with lore, is almost exactly the same. The characters are also just as quirky and misfitting as the original. I got a very distinctly Planescape feel from it myself.

The game also has a theme question, "What does one life matter?". If you played the original you should immediately realize the similarity to that game's own theme question.

Now, Numenera isn't better than the original imo, but it's definitely a game worth playing if you don't mind it basically being an interactive novel or VN.

It's a game based off older TCG without a skinner's box tricking you into thinking all the time you're wasting not being competitive by grinding freee packs is worth it. The amount of people that tell me that f2p games are better, and that they spent 200 hours or so in Hearthstone, but then admit they spent money anyway to actually be competitive blows my mind.

Progression is coming soon and there's plenty of free modes for fun, you just don't earn packs for them. You know, like actual board games/card games where you play for fun.

The game itself is what's most important though, and it's easily the most fun card game I've ever played. It'll only get better once more cards get added and a few RNG cards like Cheating Death and heavy schlong cards like Axe are tweaked or countered by new cards.

What can I say? Larian is a company that truly cares about their product and in turn their fans. The first Original Sin was a fantastic game; the second better in every single way, from a fantastic story to a beautiful world full of character, to a fantastic degree of character freedom. If the first game was an experiment in success, the second is the conscious and methodological use of that success. That SHOULD mean that their next game should be mastery, bigger and better in every way, and I thoroughly look forward to it.

This game is actually best played, at least the first time, alone to fully appreciate it and its story, but it's still roaring good fun with friends. Not many RPGs can say that.

If you enjoy RPGs (at least, non-action RPGs), then I can't recommend thsi game enough. There will be something for everyone in it, whether you play alone or with friends.

Will update once I have a full game experience, but true ultrawide and Steam Controller support already makes this a far more enjoyable game.

Sadly they kept some stupider game design choices, like basing performance scores off speed rather than metric that would be fit a SRPG such as damage dealt/taken, number of enemy soldiers down AGAINST turns taken, etc. Also, lancers are made mostly useless by the new mortar class which, because of their arcing attack, can heat a tank's weak spot over cover and from any direction! Not that I ever liked or used lancers (easier to cheese a scout or trooper in 1 with commands, but now they're useless without it being because of cheese lol.

Been waiting a long time for this series to come to PC, and I'm finally glad that it did (Persona's next, maybe with a HD remaster of Skies of Arcadia). It's a fantastic RPG that will catch you by surprise with how well all the little components come together. Most "open" world games have random lazy time wasters, but these games ooze style with even the smallest minigames, and a lot of them have real effort put into them instead of just being a variation of a regular game mechanic like you find in Assassin's Creed or whatever.

Highly recommended. I've heard some people have been having issues, but I've yet to have a single one; no crashes, no inventory problems, no audio glitches. Ironically, it's been one of the smoothest ports I've ever played. My only complaint is the lack of ultrawide support, but for being a long time console exclusive I'm not surprised it's not there, so that's fine.

Your mileage may of course vary.

Few games get released that are so perfectly fun at its most base level. Yes, the game is crazy tough, but that's a strong plus not a weakness. If you don't like hardcore old school challenge stay away, but if you're a fun of challenge and old school gameplay you really can't go wrong.

The game was a fantastic, true to life successor to Jet Grind and Jet Set. I went from, in the first hour, being a freshly born lamb still shaky on its feet to, several races, challenges, and some game time later, a god of the grind that scoffed at the game's many attempts to frighten me with heights or challenges.

It would have been perfect if the final mission wasn't so distractedly BAD. Not hard. Not challenging. But frustratingly terrible and cruel in terms of mistakes, because if you make one you get to do two entire levels all over again from the start, and these aren't a short series of challenges. While I don't find Dark Souls the epitome of difficulty it's definitely more well known and not exactly easy-and it isn't nearly as much as an asshat as this game ends up being when it comes to making you repeat content.

So yes, despite my overall enjoyment of the game I feel so STRONGLY about the final stretch which is more tedious than challenging that I am giving the game a resolute hands down and can't recommend it to anyone until they relook that portion of the game.

I'm hardly alone in this regard which you can see from reading the posts throughout the internet of people who actually played the game (I never understood why people leave Steam reviews after only a few hours into the game..).

Nothing too long here, just as fantastic as the previous games with core improvements. Better music, butter animations, gorgeous revamped art style.

If you want a really cool, funny, old school game with loads of charm made by a company that gives an F then you could do a whole lot worse.

Even at full price it's a steal.

Introduction
Yomwari is an interesting game that was something of a surprise coming from Nippon Ichi, but after playing the game through I can say that it's maybe not that that surprising at all. The game is only very loosely a horror title, more focused on the terrors and imagination of a child. There's still a pretty dark story in the background which includes the ending.

The game is fairly short, maybe eight hours tops not including retries and aimless wandering, there there's a good deal of extra time in the game if you enjoy collectibles (I do not).

In my opinion a game is overall decided by story and gameplay, one or the other has to be excellent and the best games have both in full strength.

Story
The story here is barebones, with the true story never really explained. Basically you're searching for your sister after she vanishes due to your character being in denial from an event at the very start of the game. You go look for here. Nothing complicated or frankly very interesting.

There is however apparently a much deeper story in the background between two gods, though it seems that it's a cultural thing lost on us foreigners. I ended up reading an excellent post that did a good job explaining it which would also likely explain the sisters' missing parents and the ending of the game. Knowing that heightened my enjoyment of the story, but it's not something the average joe would pick up as it's not well explained in game.

[POOR] [ACCEPTABLE] [EXCELLENT]

Gameplay
I played this title using my steam controller on my tv since my monitor's ultra wide was not really supported. The controls were decent but didn't feel very fluid. The gameplay itself was simple, you either distract or avoid enemies each of which detect, hunt, and move in unique ways. There were a few frustrating parts, but not ultimately very difficult. You WILL get lost however as the map is subpar at best and the layout of the game world can be disorienting.

There's nothing to cry home about here. There aren't any moments where the game makes you feel great about an accomplishment or the completion of an an event and nothing for those seeking challenge I was still happy enough to tackle each section and had motivation to continue forward, and the game was fun throughout in a simple, pleasing way.

That's probably due to the very retro vibe I got in terms of gameplay and controls, especially during the moments of frustration (factory, for instance...). That's not necessarily a bad thing and some people might even like it.

[POOR] [ACCEPTABLE] [EXCELLENT]

Misc Pros
  • Art style fits the game well
  • There's enough challenge to maintain interest for most people
  • You definitely have motivation to continue playing; finding out what the heck is going on is great lure
  • Atmosphere, which is important for horror games, is different but there and well executed

Misc Cons
  • Aside from a few jump scares and scenes not very scary or disturbing
  • Music was forgettable, as was the presented story
  • Controls can be frustrating at times

Worth it?
Yomawari is never going to be an indie hit, but it's a fantastic game well worth its humble price. If you enjoy horror games and want to try something on the lighter side Yomawari is a great cleansing snack before or after games like Soma.
