Early Access Review
Imagine killing your social game by implementing anti-cheat that only hurts people using quality of life mods. We're already seeing more actually malicious stuff creep through, so what really was the point here?

It basically feels like a Dark Souls game with an open world except it's also big enough to feel like it has all of its DLC already. It pulls together all of the best concepts and mechanics from the rest of the series and gives you a gigantic theme park to run around on a horse in. It took me 100 hours to just get through the entire game once and I don't regret the time I've spent.

The best feeling Halo game from 343 yet, feeling a lot more in line with the original Bungie games.

The multiplayer is free to play but uses a battle pass system, the premium costing just $10, but still having an amount of free stuff focused around the new armor. At the time of writing the premium battle pass is focused around Halo: Reach cosmetics, so if you don't care for those then just don't buy it. Weekly challenges also give you some kind of free cosmetic if you put in the effort to obtain it. After the progression update, daily experience feels pretty solid along with the weekly challenges. The battle passes are said to not expire, just like they don't in the Master Chief Collection. While on that note; you don't pay for the seasonal content in the Master Chief Collection, but the multiplayer here for Infinite is free to play, so they have to get their money back somehow outside of selling the campaign or their game pass service. The only real complaint I can make now is some of the cosmetic bundles still seem pretty pricey.

The game is pretty well balanced, with every weapon in the current sandbox being usable, even if some being more situational than others. The vehicles could still use a little bit of work. The ghost for instance still feels like it hits a bit way too hard. The way vehicles drop in to Big Team Battle feels a bit random and tanks in particular seem pretty rare. The way they are in 4v4 seem fine though, as valuable as any power weapon and able to be stolen or removed from the field just as quick so long as you're paying attention.

Let's talk about game modes. Strangely enough we don't have specific playlists outside of Bot Matches, Quick Play, Ranked Arena, and Big Team Battle. The 4v4 modes cycle between Team Slayer, Oddball, CTF, One Flag, and Strongholds. Big Team Battle pits you with Team Slayer and CTF as well, but also Total Control. While having all of these objective game modes being pushed in to regular game play is nice, I'd appreciate that in the future we could get separate playlists, or at least some mixed options like in the Master Chief Collection.

While still not quite having the same old school sounds for everything, a lot of this games sound design is still sort of a mix of those old sounds and something with a bit more punch. Hit sounds, weapon sounds, vehicle sounds, everything here is great. The music is alright, at least from what little bits we've heard from the multiplayer. The only real problem I have is that the surround sound mixing is a little weird and it's much harder to hear anything behind you.

The campaign still doesn't come out until a bit later today, but I'll update my review when I've put a decent amount of hours in to it.

It's honestly impressive for us to get a AAA game as polished as this during Covid, much less something as good as this from 343 with its spotty track record with the previous two games and with how MCC was handled early on.

Started playing JP 5 years ago, binged it for a half a year before dropping it and then coming back to it off and on. Over a thousand hours between a few characters there, but I opted to start over on NA anyway as soon as beta hit on Xbox. A new start, a fresh inventory, and even with some of the issues the initial launch had I've still really enjoyed playing again.

Io is best girl and you can't change my mind.

Though only Halo: Reach is currently part of Master Chief Collection, it's just as good as I remember it being on Xbox 360. Armor abilities are weird and the DMR is king, but otherwise it's still Halo, and with this release the ground work is laid for the rest of the games to be ported soon.
