I'm an Italian janitor and musician, born in 1991, graduate in Japanese language and literature at the University of Turin. Living my life as a would-be rock musician, lover of books, music, anime, languages, politics, philosophy and, of course, videogames. Gaming has been a fundamental part of my life ever since my family's first computer, where I used to play Monkey Island over and over again on Windows 3.1.

I am a strong supporter of videogames as an artistic medium with the potential to deliver, in its best examples, some of the most complex and complete artistic experiences. I consider Metal Gear Solid to be my favourite franchise; I'm a long-time member of the largest Italian Metal Gear Solid community, MetalGearWeb.net , for which I used to write editorials under the nickname "Snake Man".

I play guitar in the metal band "Straight to Pain", and in two further cover projects.

Consider this a non-recommendation with a huge qualifier. And the qualifier is: Dark Souls is a great game, with excellent level design, intriguing lore, deep fighting gameplay, great roleplaying potential, deep and immersive dark fantasy world, excellent atmosphere. However, some... questionable design choices make it, quite simply, not for everyone.

  • If you have a busy life, so the phone may ring, a relative may need your help, a pet or a little child may cause trouble around the hous, you might need to go to the bathroom or to sneeze, and for these and more reasons you really need a pause function mid-boss fight, this game is not for you. Apparently, in From Software's view real hardcore gamers have no life, friends, family, or biological urges.

  • If you have a job or a life filled with sources of stress and you need videogames to relieve that stress rather than get even more of it, this game is not for you.

  • If you don't have a lot of free time on your hands, so that you can't afford to invest hours on a game just to trial-and-error your way into learning what you're supposed to be doing, where you're supposed to be going, what is even going on in the story, and how the bloody game mechanics even work, this game is not for you.

  • If you dislike PvP multiplayer and don't like being forced into it, this game is not for you.

  • If you can't handle the tedium and repetition of having to replay through the same parts and the same enemies over and over again, often losing your XP/money in the process, just to even GET to the part that you screwed up, this game is not for you.

  • If you can't handle the frustration of the camera and quirky collision physics killing you just as often as your own mistakes do, this game is not for you.

  • If you can't handle LOTS of frustration, to the point that the "release" after the tension of a challenging fight sometimes turns into a "finally this thing stopped wasting my time" feeling, this game is not for you.

  • If you can't handle the frustration of slow-responding, sub-par controls that require hours getting used to and utmost precision and timing to execute, this game is not for you.

  • If you don't want to sift through Google and .ini files to install and configure mods just to make this bloody awful port anywhere near playable, this game is not for you.

  • If you don't have a USB controller, BY GOD is this game not for you. Controlling this game with mouse and keyboard is like piloting an airplane with your buttcheeks.

If you don't fall into any of these categories, by all means, get this game.

I played a hundred hours of it, and plan to play more. However, I only got through it because I am unemployed at the time of writing, because I could alt-tab to wikis and guides whenever I got stuck, and because I took the time to create a makeshift "Quicksave mod" and a firewall rule to block out multiplayer. Also, I used DSfix mod's pause function. Without even one of these five conditions, I would probably have abandoned it 10 hours in. The lack of a true pause button alone would have led me to ask for a refund, had I not learned of the mod.
