I don't write a lot of reviews, but I felt I needed to for this game.

Severed Steel absolutely nails the gameplay. It's the best FPS I've ever played. The movement system has a slight learning curve, but once you adjust to it the game makes you feel like a vengeful god. You spend nearly every second of each level perpetually in combat, spreading an acrobatic swathe of death and destruction across the tron-esque environments that crumble around you over the course of an engagement. This feeling of power is carefully balanced with the efficacy of the AI, which will chew you to pieces if you don't lean in to the action move star role. If you like games where you shoot things then you owe it to yourself to pick this up. In my opinion, this is the new golden standard for FPS.

My only real complaint would be the amount of content currently in the game. I finished the campaign on the recommended difficulty setting in about 2 hours. The developers have responded to other reviews critiquing the length of the game by claiming that the game is highly replayable due to the firefight mode. This is essential an arcade mode where you play the same maps again but try to chain combos together. If high scores and gameplay mutators are your thing then you might agree, but personally I didn't find it that engaging. I don't think it really has the depth right now to justify claiming it's the bulk of the game, at least in regard to the asking price.

To sum up my thoughts, I'd say Severed Steel is a ton of quality without much quantity. There's lots of potential here and I really hope this game continues to be expanded. I'd love to see a sort of horde mode modifier with respawning enemies. It's really a personal judgement if the gameplay is enough to justify the price of admission but considering the size of the team who made this game and the quality of the result I'd say it does. If the worst complaint you can leverage against something is that there isn't enough of it, that's pretty high praise.
