I never played the original Ducktales on NES, but purchased this remaster (remake?) after seeing the trailers on Steam and looking at a few gameplay videos on Youtube. Twenty hours into the game, after beating the game and getting almost all of the achievements, I have mixed feelings about the game. Let's start with what I don't like first.

The cutscenes. Goodness gracious, the FREAKING cutscenes. They are entertaining to watch on your first play through, but eventually they get very obnoxious and ruin the pacing of the game. Why do I need to see them again after beating a level, or certain segment of a level? Why are so many of them peppered throughout the level in the first place? Yes you can skip them, but there should have either been an option to disable them outright or at the very least not replay once you've seen it already (unless you're playing a new game).

Besides that, there are some other negatives to address (though these are not at the same level as those cut scenes). For one, the cane that serves as your main form of attack can be awkward to use when traversing long spike pits or hitting smaller enemies and can cause you to take damage or die as a result. I also ran into a couple of glitches where a cut scene wouldn't load, essentially putting me into a soft lock. (There are also instances of folks being soft locked after beating the final boss to be weary of, though this personally didn't happen to me).

Other than that, I think that this game is decent. The levels are simple yet challenging (to a degree) and have a nice level of variety, from riding mine carts to running away from boulders, Indiana Jones style. I also love the fact that the game looks and almost exactly like a Saturday morning cartoon, along with a great soundtrack (The Moon and Opening Level theme are favorites of mine). Plus, there are tons of concept art and music to unlock, though be prepared to grind for a bit to get them all.

I would recommend this game to those who played the original (which I did after beating this game), or like old school platformers and can deal with the negatives I mentioned earlier.

My Score: 7/10

I was intrigued by the fact that this game is a mixture of a Metroidvania and bullet hell shoot 'em up, but wasn't 100% sure if that combination would make for a good experience. However after beating the game, I've come to the conclusion that it does in fact make for a good experience! I, like probably most other people who've played this game, instantly felt as though I was playing a Zelda game - the way progression is handled with beating a certain amount of dungeons to access the final boss, dungeons that have you solving puzzles, engaging in combat trials to access a key item or upgrade and even the victory chime that plays whenever you finally "crack the code" - this is a Zelda game through and through.

Some other aspects of the game that I like include the upgrade system and how you can add points to specific abilities, or take away points from one and add them to another. Also throughout the game, I also liked engaging in races against friendly NPCs and discovering one of the many well hidden secrets placed throughout the overworld and dungeons. On top of that, the game has a nice and sharp visuals, and great sound design (like how for example, shooting at certain items sounds like someone tapping on glass cups).

There are a few things about the game that I don't like. For all of the similarities that this shares with Zelda, it's still a bullet hell shooter at the end of the day and can feel very overwhelming and frustrating at some points (even with me playing on this game's version of medium settings). Also, midway through the game, you get the ability to travel across water, but it felt like I was sliding on ice and constantly fighting the controls to keep the player character stable. The game's story is hard to follow due to the very minimal dialogue and not terribly interesting - I like to know why I'm doing what I'm doing in a game as that make it more engaging for me. Finally, there's the fact that quitting out of the game through the main menu takes way longer than expected (I played this on Steam Deck, so it could potentially be related to that)

With that being said, I still think this is a great game and one that fans of Zelda, Metroidvania's or bullet hell games should try out. I'm very impressed that only two people made this game and can't wait to see what else they have to offer.

My Score: 8/10

Great game, easy to play but hard to master. Controls are simple and work well. Reminds me of those XiaoXiao flash videos from the mid 2000s. The flow of combat makes this game feel like a work of art. Highly recommend for everyone, from casual to hardcore.

Originally played and beat this game on 3DS, but decided to get it on Steam for the achievements. What can I say about this game that hasn't already been said? It's hard as heck but also addictive as heck. The game is essentially a pixel Metroidvania, complete with retro music, where the goal is to find the missing members of your spaceship after it crashes. Instead of attacking/jumping like in a traditional platformer, you get around by utilizing a unique gravity shifting mechanic. With this feature, the experience constantly feels challenging yet fresh and exciting - there will be moments where you have to shift over disappearing platforms, avoid spikes or dodge obstacles. At times, there will be bouts of trial and error that will frustrate you, but that quickly disappears once you learn what you're supposed to do (it also has a bit of a puzzle element in a way).

Overall though, I thoroughly enjoyed this game and recommend it to anyone who enjoys challenging games.

What can I say, this is a great game and one of the best 2D platformers I've ever played. The world that you explore is huge and filled with tons of great combat, platforming challenges, bugs (literally, not the glitchy kind), hidden secrets and lore. Plus, you get to really customize your playing experience with charms (which are essentially removable upgrades). You can be the ultimate spellcaster and have all the bugs fear your name, powerful warrior with the strongest weapon known to bugkind or be an absolute nutcase and use no charms at all (which will take the game to a whole new level).

There are a few things worth pointing out though, especially if you're new to this genre or consider yourself a casual gamer. For one, the game is hard. There will be plenty of times were you will get frustrated with a boss fight/platforming challenge and want to smash your controller to bits (especially against a certain Moth that loves his shields way too much). There are also times were you will feel like you've hit a brick wall and can't figure out where to go next. I wouldn't recommend this game if those two factors turn you off, but know that with patience and persistence, you're guaranteed to overcome any challenge the game throws at you.

Overall though, the game is very fun and addicting and chances are you will enjoy it. Plus, the game is less than 30 bucks but packs as much, if not more content than a $60 game, so the bang for your buck factor is really strong here. Why not give it a shot?

I mean the game was obviously designed to be as frustrating and miserable as possible. I'm not really sure how I could recommend something like this....

Cuphead is an solid overall game for anyone who enjoys action or run 'n gun games. It has easy to learn controls, looks/sounds incredible,is very fun/addicting and most importantly has a lot of charm. The game is essentially a long and challenging boss rush that will frustrate a lot but always leave you with the satisfaction of hard work and effort after beating a boss (or one of the several run n gun platformer levels). If you like difficult games that makes you learn from failure, I highly recommend this. Cuphead gets a 9/10 from me!

Overall, I think this is a solid game. While it can get unbearably frustrating at times (especially on your first playthrough), it's still fun and addicting enough to keep you at it again and again. Once you manage to overcome each obstacle, and you will, it is very satisfying and actually feels like something you put work and effort into. If you like challenging games, I'd recommend this!

This is a great game overall- excellent graphics, good sound, and a great story mode. As a Street Fighter player, I expected a rough transition but the combat system is easy to learn and a lot of fun to experiment with.

My only gripe is the micro transaction system present in the in-game store. I feel like its a cheap and dirty way to get more money from the players and completely unnecessary. Other than that, I highly recommend this game for anyone looking to get into fighting games!
