The game gets worse and worse. The puzzles are incredibly boring.

The shooting and climbing, however?
That's amazing.

The shooting is the best so far (maybe to be beaten by HL:Alyx in 2 days?) and the climbing is great (it's done better by blade and sorcery).

I'd recommend the game if you could somehow unlock the Sandboxes at the start and avoid having to get through the tedious parts.

EDIT: It's worth playing if you can get it at a steep discount though (at least 50%, bordering 75%)

you gotta get all the secret sandbox items hidden in the levels behind jump puzzles

idk I liked the core mechanics enough to enjoy finding things, maybe you just didn't like the game

Of course, haha. There's a reason why you see "7.7 hrs on record" (although that isn't actually my total, but it's fairly close).

My point is that having to go through even one level to play the sandboxes isn't worth it in my opinion , especially since even the sandboxes aren't really that good, but they're definitely better than the base game.

Yes. - I by far prefer HL:Alyx, it's a better game, but it's an entirely different game and does not really compare to Boneworks.
