This expansion opens up a world of possibilities that I would like the dev team to follow. It is true that it caters more to the RPG enthusiasts, but together with the free patch focused on culture, the more GSG minded should not be disapointed especially as it will with further development of the game allow for interesting strategic choices, already provides more challenge, ecourages tall play and an overall authentic medieval-inspired experiance. Personally, when seeing the court room empty out with the ruler, vassals and knights now present in the army stack rather than the court, the old GSG map game somehow comes allive, the characters are now present in specific localities around the map and not floating around in the aether. I hope for further development of this kind of place-sensitive immersion of characters into the game world, accompanied by superb presentation that the Royal Court definitely is.

A truly worthy successor in the Crusader Kings series. It is a bit lacking in eventful content after reaching about 100 hours at the moment, but grand strategy games from Paradox get better with every update. The created medieval world is already filled with historical characters, believable filler where history is lacking and authentic, well researched historical and geographical context. Even clicking through the characters, duchies, kingdoms, decisions and then looking them up on wikipedia or in history articles could be considered an educational game :)

I dont know of any other RPGs that would be so historical and realistic. If you are looking to immerse yourselves into the early 15th century in Central Europe, or the late medieval period in Europe generally, look no further.

Early Access Review
This game has more depth than any transportation tycoon kind of game as you have to manage the needs of the people as well as resources, industry and transportation. A setting in a marxist-leninist one party state with a central planning economy is thus befitting. Its an evolution of the transport tycoon genre where the towns are not just passive backdrops for the player, a capitalist, to exploit, the player has to manage the resources and workers of a whole country. It is thus not just a transport or industry tycoon, it is also a wholesome city builder with country management like Tropico. Even if not a fan of the genres, for those nostalgic for the Eastern Block the game is a must. I always wanted to role-play transport tycoon as a state managing its transportation not a single capitalist firm and I always wanted a Tropico set in the Eastern Block. This is the best or even the only game in this personal niche of mine. The game is in early access and there are some glitches and crashes, clunky controls etc, however the developers are improving on it and adding new content all the time. Besides the workshop i now up and running with some high quality models and maps. The game already has a dedicated community of players who provide guides etc.

Especially after the 1.2 upgrade this game is highly engaging to play all types of countries (tribal, kingdoms, republics), the wide play is challenging enough, the tall play now has plenty of possibilities as well.

I highly recommend this game as it is the first that tackles earlier prehistory to a sufficient degree and in a realistic manner.

Positive aspects: complex and relatively realistic productive cycles and variety of resources and products, good control of subsistence and economic processes, good agent simulation
Negative aspects: unrealistic topography, non natural terrain of hills and valleys, no incentives to move and migrate, thus unrealistic settlement continuity from the paleolithic to the iron age, architecture limited to atlantic european megalithic tradition.

I hope the developers improve on the game, but they at least provided us prehistoric enthusiasts with a working game. Still waiting for the seemingly more complex and realistic AC.
