Context of reviewer, started playing badck during RS2 during around '08 and stuck with it into the early RS3 days. Have been casually playing OSRS on and off between other games.

Pros:
- Large amount of content in game.
- Questing is better than typical MMOs for newer quests. While some like Legends Quest can be a bit obtuse without a guide, others are great and a welcome change from the typical MMO quest.
- Decently large amount of content available for free.
- Combat system is a lot simpler to get into due to it being click based but can get complex at the high end when you get into strats like prayer flicking, switches and combo eating.
- Content(barring intergrity changes) is put to a vote to the playerbase on what's implemented.
- Quite a lot of content comes out and quite frequently, due largely to the simple graphics shortening dev times.
- If you enjoy going for achievements others rarely have there's a decent amount to go after such as hitting 99, max experience, maxed accounts, completing the Inferno(a very difficult fight) or doing any of those on an Ironman account of some variety(accounts that can't trade).
- Can be run on a toaster.

Cons:
- This game is very grindy. This still holds the core of being an MMO from the 2000s and it can go particularly slow. F2P will be particularly slow to start compared to getting Membership but P2P slows down eventually too. Some people may see this as a pro but others a con.
- Some people may not like the graphics.
- Game operates on a tick system where actions including movement happen on a 0.6 seconds clock. This can feel clunky at times but the effect isn't as pronounced as on RS3.
- Vanilla Client is missing Quality of Life features. This will be discussed in my section on RuneLite.

Comparisons to Runescape 3

- Almost all actions are taken through clicking versus the hotbar combat on RS3. I feel which someone will prefer will be personal preference.
- Both have WoW Token equivalents in the form of Bonds. A bond redeemed on one game will allow membership of the other on the same account.
- Levelling is typically slower on OSRS compared to RS3 and RS3 has some skills that go to 120 compared to all going to 99 on OSRS.
- RS3 has more skills and a bigger back catalogue of content including quests as OSRS is based off a version of the game from 2007 and only some post 2007 content has been ported in.
- Graphically they're very different.
- Content in OSRS is voted in by the community by a poll while on RS3 devs generally put in what they wish.
- RS3 has a wide range of MTX while the only form OSRS has is bonds.

RuneLite:

- Runelite is an open source 3rd party client that has been approved to be used with the game by Jagex.
- It features a plugin hub to add features such as extended draw distance, quick hopping between worlds, guides to quests built into the client. The list goes on.
- It's available on multiple platforms while the official client is for Windows.
- It does lack some of the very recent additions to the official client like the ability to go above 50 FPS and Steam integration

In conclusion do I recommend OSRS? Like with RS3 it depends but for different reasons. There is a very real possibility that this game isn't for you. It does not target the same sort of MMO player that most MMOs nowadays do. On the flip side if you don't enjoy most modern MMOs or want something different for a while then it could potentially be absolutely for you. I wouldn't let the graphics alone be a turn off and just try it. Gameplay wise it may not be for you and that's fine, or it could be just what you're looking for.

As for if you should buy membership, if you player Runescape back in the day and you know vaguely what you're getting into it may be worth trying with a month of membership to get that faster start with stuff like the Waterfall Quest. If you haven't touched it before it may be worth sticking to F2P for a bit and just aim to clear all of the F2P quests first to get a feel for the game before spending money on it.

Context on reviewer, started the game during 4.X(Stormblood patch cycle) after having tried a number of MMOs. Originally came from Runescape 3. Before this only stuck to single player Final Fantasy games and tend to favour the more 2D games but like some of the 3D FFs too.

Considering my playtime in this game it's probably not going to be surprising to hear I like this game, though it is not without it's flaws at the same time and I will be splitting this review into the pros and cons so if someone reads this they can judge if those flaws will detract too much from the experience.

Pros:

* Story. This is something that'll actually show up again in the cons but notably two of it's expansions(Heavensward and Shadowbringers) have strong writing and a compelling narrative. Basically the FF part of the game really shines through in these sections.

* All classes on one character. No need to keep multiple characters to try out different classes which is useful since the game structure requiring you to go through the main story to experience current content would make it difficult to experience different classes in high end content otherwise.

* Combat system is rather fluid and more complex than it initially sounds. Many from other games may look at FFXIV's 2.5s GCD and think it slow, and it is at low levels however the combat system is typically heavily reliant on oGCDs and the GCD can be shortened through gear. Double weaving of oGCDs(fitting in 2 oGCDs for every GCD) isn't uncommon though it can be moreso in some classes than others which translates more towards an action every 0.6 seconds.

* The requirement to go through the main story leads to less content being dead content(at least for normal level difficulty) since it's required. Extreme and Savage content however is rare to see run if it's from previous expacs.

* Long free trial. This extends into Heavensward which can give an idea to the player of what the game is really like since Heavensward set a lot of trends for future expacs to follow and has one of the stronger stories in the game.

Cons:

* A Realm Reborn. It's unsurprising that a base game built under a lot of constraints has issues(Noclip documentary is an interesting watch if you're curious about that). The story is weak and it can be a bit of a slog to get through since you don't have many skills on your class yet. This has somewhat been mitigated with the rework but it's still an issue.

* Outgearing of content. Old content tends to get trivialised over time as more expansions come out which tends to make them boring. Occasionally there are some exceptions which dungeons which sync you to a very specific ilvl(a measure of the quality of the gear) but these are few and far between.

* Story during ARR and Stormblood is weak, ARR drags it's heels getting to the story while Stormblood suffers from splitting it's focus while one half being a lot weaker of a narrative than the other while flip flopping between them.

* PvP presence just isn't there compared to other games. The only active form of PvP is Frontlines but 1v1 and other small scale PvP is usually dead most of the time except during events.

* There is a botting issue in FFXIV, causing some markets to be flooded by bots and making some methods difficult for legitimate players to make money with.

MTX:

* FFXIV does have a cash shop. It mostly serves to provide fashion items, primarily from previous seasonal events ingame for people who missed those events. Not all items fall under that though and some are cash shop only.

* Jump potions and Fantasias. Jump potions allow you to skip some of the story or levelling process for a class. Fantasias let you redo your character's appearance and race(some small tweaks like hairstyle can be done ingame). Both are on the cash shop. You get one of the latter for free during ARR.

* World transfers, renaming, fancier ingame weddings and additional retainers(allow more selling on the marketboard and item storage. Normally you only have two) are all available through MTX.

Other:

* Community. You'll often see how the community is remarked as being friendly. Usually this has to do with people piling on towards people being an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to other players, though sometimes this behaviour is directed at people who are just trying to help too. The bulk of players though I'd say are just like on a typical MMO and are normal.

In conclusion, I do think FFXIV is a game at the least worth trying out. By the time you'll be at the point that you need to buy the game and pay a sub you'll know if it's for you. It's generally a good starting point for new MMO players but can be hopped into by veteran players too.

Context of reviewer, started playing back during RS2, left a year or so into RS3 and occasionally have been back to both this and OSRS.

Pros:
- Large amount of content due to being around for nearly 20 years now.
- Questing is a lot better than typical MMOs. Doesn't follow general quest design convention.
- Large amount of content available for free.
- Playerbase on RS3(at time of writing) is generally friendly outside of a few specific areas(W84).
- Hotbar combat style for if you're coming from another MMO, the ability to automate the triggering of abilities if you're coming back and played before EoC.

Cons:
- Interface at default is rather clunky and you will likely need to adjust it. I replayed the free to play experience a while back on an alt to relearn this version of the game and I felt the tutorial in Burthorpe wasn't great. This may be different for a completely new player.
- Content updates seem to not be too frequent compared to other games and skewed towards either endgame or beginner content with not as much in the middle.
- Microtransactions. This game has it in the form of Treasure Hunter(lootboxes), Solomon's Store(cash shop) and some other stuff occasionally that encourages the use of MTX(Yak Track). Furthermore, quests regularly provide you with lootbox spins which you will get a lot of early on due to being able to burn through quests. These will run out eventually and be careful if you have a gambling addiction you will need to beware of this.
- Tick system. All actions including movement happen on server ticks(0.6 seconds) which can make the game feel clunky at times.
- Known bugs not being fixed/very slowly being fixed.

I cannot comment on the endgame raiding as I personally have not gotten into that as I predominately quest in this game.

Comparisons to Old School Runescape

- Uses a hotbar combat system compared to the mouse clicking combat system of OSRS. I feel which someone will prefer will be personal preference.
- Both have WoW Token equivalents in the form of Bonds. A bond redeemed on one game will allow membership of the other on the same account.
- Levelling is typically faster on RS3 compared to OSRS but RS3 has some skills that go to 120 compared to all going to 99 on OSRS.

In conclusion do I recommend RS3? It depends, I wouldn't go into this expecting the game of your childhood but it has a lot of redeeming qualities to it but it's slow content releases compared to other games makes it harder to justify sticking with it but at the same time it has such a back catalogue of content that hopping on late you could go through all of that for a long while.

If I could I'd give this game the mixed rating but they only allow yes/no for individual games. If MTX was removed/pulled back to just bonds and there was signs of scaling up on content being delivered then that'd be an easy yes. Ultimately though I'm going to err on the side of caution and mark this a no.

My personal advice is to try F2P and get through a good chunk of the quests. If you're prone to gambling or whaling then like with other games with MTX I'd recommend avoiding this game.
