Official support for Ballistic Overkill ended on January 31, 2020, shortly after my previous review revision. What that means is that the official servers and leaderboards have been discontinued, although player-hosted dedicated servers can still be ran and played on. It was a good send off by making the game vastly cheaper now that the game is officially considered unsupported. However, an issue arises in that since there is no longer any developers for the game anymore, cheaters have free reign over the servers, given that the server owners don't blacklist those individuals. Thankfully though, they are few and far between and has not been a threat to this game's already tiny remaining playerbase. In any case, this game is now solely played for fun, as rewards are no longer given (save for lockboxes, which still do drop), so if you want to relive that bit of nostalgia for this game, it'll remain around in this 2017 bubble of time.

THIRD EDIT, NOVEMBER 26, 2019

Four years in, and Ballistic Overkill's developers have moved on to greener pastures. Granted, the last update was in December 2018, and the last interaction at all was in January 2019, but it's clear that the only support they're giving now is just keeping the official servers running, and even then we don't know how long it will be supported in this regard. As for the features included since my last review update, the only major one of note was the Juggernaut gamemode, and it isn't even a ranked mode (thankfully). It's biggest issue is the Interdiction sniper ruining any semblance of fun from the mode with it's absurd 7.77x headshot multiplier. As for the playerbase, it is sad to say that it is continuing to dwindle down to single server amounts of players, sometimes not even filling a single 12 player server at times. I hate seeing such a potentially great game going to waste simply because Aquiris refuses to provide any developers for this project anymore. I seriously hope they come back to this game sometime in the future.

SECOND EDIT, NOVEMBER 22, 2017

Ballistic Overkill, in it's current state, has stagnated. While Workshop support is something that is being promised for some "future date", right now the game is very monotonous, with the whole get box, wait 2 days, get another. You can try your hand at getting leaderboard rewards, but it seems as though a certain few people are locking average players out of golden lockboxes, and the weekly class leaderboards just award regular scrap for whatever box is currently in season. Class balance is not in the best of places, with some classes being incredibly bland to play, some are really cheesy to play and fight against, and some are just outright bad and have no reason to be used.

While my review for this game may seem like it's getting increasingly bitter, I still recommend this game if you want a quick jump-in-and-play type of game to have. It's roots as a browser game have not been completely lost as a premium game now.

FIRST EDIT, APRIL 14, 2017
-----
Ballistic Overkill has changed over it's 2 year journey through Early Access. It has readded all of the classes, over 80 of the weapons, and on it's second season of skins, as of April 2017. My biggest complaint, along with a lot of other people, is the game's netcode. I'll be honest -- it's absolutely horrendous. Hitting people and getting hit by people from around corners is just so common and is frustrating for all people. But other than that and some quality-of-life changes the game desperately needs (Advanced graphics options, for one), the game is really well-polished and continues to take my time every other day.

ORIGINAL REVIEW, OCTOBER 8, 2015
-----
This game is the successor to the Free-To-Play browser game, Ballistic. Although still in Early Access, it is still a good game. At the writing of this review, the game is still quite buggy & unfinished, but it is still playable. I recommend buying this game at it's very cheap launch price!
