Piloting mechs is fun, but fighting giant monsters feels boring.
The excessive knockback and smoke effects make battles more frustrating than engaging.

The game is quite short and easy, so I recommend playing it on hard mode for a better challenge.

It is a Nintendo DS game adapted for PC. The graphics give a certain nostalgia to those who lived at the time. The fact that it is 3D allows for a more cinematic narrative with better presentation of the story, which is an extra cool thing compared to the original SNES version and the pixel remaster. The story is really cool and the entire game is a really fun adventure with interesting companions and an engaging plot.

However, the game is extremely easy in normal mode with the exception of the last boss fight. All battles were relatively easy when using the right strategies (it's easy to understand how to fight the bosses if you think a little). However, the last boss wasn't like that, there is no feasible strategy to beat him other than grinding as much as possible (I went up to level 85, which took me more than 4 hours or so, starting from level 61 using the siren trick on the surface of the moon) which made me defeat the final boss as if he were a mere insect without presenting any challenge. The fight against the sub bosses that give powerful items in that same boss dungeon was more challenging than the real final boss fight. If you want to play in hard mode I strongly recommend following a guide (which kind of loses the fun) or the stress when you reach the final boss will be unbelievable.

There are side quests that give better equipment, invocations and augmentations that are missable if you don't do them at the right time. The game does not give any tips on where to start side quests or find equipment and summons, basically you must explore the places and backtrack the places you visited if you want to play without following a guide (if you wanted to play in hard mode I highly recommend following a guide To avoid losing anything, some augmentations will make all the difference in hard mode)

The real-time but turn-based combat style is uncomfortable, while you are choosing an item or spell the battle is going on and there is no way to change the configuration of the items and spells menu to put what will be used most frequently in the first few slots. It's not something that really bothers you since the game's difficulty isn't great and it's also possible to choose the speed of the battle in the settings.

The game is awesome as the original is. No big changes. Really appreciated the expert mode as a way to make the game more enjoyable. You won't play this game for any story, but will play for the challenge it proposes, and the exploration vibe it gives. Side quests are really boring and don't give any kind of must-have reward (although some side quests bosses are challenging). Soundtrack is fantastic, couldn't expect less from Yuzo Koshiro.

The same game from 2001. Still amazing! I had the same amount of fun a had back then. But I've to say, it's too easy in the normal mode. Would appreciate if a harder mode were available at the beginning of the game. The default commands layout for keyboard is terrible, the experience would improve by playing on some controller. Also, the no-tank movement mode sucks. Moreover, it's not working very nice on Linux machine trough proton, can't see the pre-rendered cutscenes in game.
