The best Souls-like I have played yet. Visually everything makes sense. Gameplay mechanics are creative, which is difficult to do in a 2d game without falsifying difficulty by forcing muscle memory. The challenging bits can be overcome a number of ways. Handling your character is easy enough to understand, and discovering your limits, but difficult to master riding the border of those limits. There's a lot of choice in molding and developing style, to compliment what you like most about the mechanics available to you. I've been blown away by several 2D pixel art games to be published the last several years, which is more than I can say to the counterparts. This is hands down one of the best, I haven't finished it before writing this review (I am 8 hours in), but fun factor I feel like I can say it is at the very least top 3. Maybe even top 5 in the last 8 years, top 10 of all time across all genres, 2D or 3D. I am impressed by Adult Swim's eye for talent, White Rabbit nailed it.

Technical = 5/5 (No clunkiness, no bugs so far)
Difficulty = 4/5 (Options to scale difficulty within mechanical choices during your playthrough)
Mechanics = 5/5
Customization = 4/5
Visual = 5/5
Audio = 4/5
Voice acting = 4/5
Story = 4/5 (Interesting ways to introduce story-line without burden)

Beautifully executed, I enjoyed watching pieces of development on twitch as well. Very talented couple of guys.

I want to love everything about this game. So much going for it. But mechanically it's a piece of garbage. The combat itself is actually really nice, fluid, and interesting at times. But once you start fighting multiple targets (particularly 4-5+), it's a mess. The locking system is the only system in the game. There's no option to actually completely disable it. If you hold the button to disable it entirely through combat, it will still lock on, spin your cam in all sorts of wonky directions (doesn't do when locked on), when certain attack types happen to you it launches you 10ft in a direction that is dependent on where you're facing and how/where you're getting hit (doesn't do when locked on). The sticky target thing I get is for controllers, and honestly seems like a really good solution to apparent issues that come with directional swing combat, movement, and other things that would provide impossible to do without it on a controller. However, it comes with a heavy penalty. It takes any chance of finesse and creative swordplay with your combos and moveset completely out of the picture.

This one problem is such a distraction from the game, all other problems the game has is arbitrary. I don't care about spending market price on a good game. This just isn't one. I wouldn't recommend paying full price for this. It feels like a $15 idea that went sour.

Got this at 50% off on Summer sale ($5). Definitely worth it. This game is super fun, particularly if you're watching something on the 2nd monitor (perfect for CS:GO Cologne).

I can't really put my finger on what's so satisfying about RPing a Domina and watching Gladiators you train up in AI vs AI, but it is. To get to a point where you can hit cruise control manually controlling them is ok too. If you like MUGEN, you might like this game. There's not nearly the variety or anything but just watching AI slaughter each other is kinda cool.

These games tend to have several gamebreaking bugs on release*. I waited several months to give Funcom time to take care of the really gnarly ones. I typically give games a couple/few hundred hours before writing a review. But after about 50 hours there are some pretty stiff cons that prevent me from investing in the game as much as I'd like to.

Cons:
- You can put a bag down on the outside of someones wall, and break chests deep in the base (without actually breaking any walls or parts of the building) and the loot will pop into the bag outside. To be very clear, this is an exploit of mechanics that don't work properly and is not intended.
- Due to the nature of not being able to build near another players building (including siege equipment placement) combined with total dismissal of structural integrity, you can build unraidable bases.
- You can put yourself against particular types of terrain and/or buildings and get integrated wall-hacks and see where everyones chests are.

Pros:
- The game is awesome excluding the above
- Runs smooth, almost no crashing, no impactful FPS drops
- The current tier system is really nice, there's not a lot of arbitrary mediocre things to learn in between the worst and best stuff in the game
- The features that this game has, and intends to impliment, add a lot more flavor to a game of this kind

There's a lot more pros and cons that are probably worth mentioning, but this review is mostly intended to let people be aware of what I consider really game breaking problems that need to be overcome. In addition to pointing that out, I also want to say without those problems this game would be incredible.

*I understand this is "Early Access". I, like many others, was pretty excited for this game. As far as I'm concerned, as soon as a company accepts money from consumers for a product on an open platform in which everyone has access, it is just that. A release.

Tom Happ is on the short list of legends of 1 man developers who manage to make a masterpiece.

This game is amazing, for so many reasons. Play it on Hard your first blind playthrough, do yourself a service. Maybe it should be noted, I'm not sure I would like this game as much as I do without a controller (I used a 360 corded).

Game is worth every penny.

Since my last updated review they have fixed a number of problems and introduced a lot more to the game. I have far too many hours in this game and to say the least it is worth checking out if you ever wanted to check it out before if you'd be going in blind. I'm updating this as I'm reinstalling to play with a friend since meeting up with people is doable now.

Simple action movie. These days I think there's an expectation from most people to have a rich, deep story. This reminds me of staple 90's action movies, there's a clear set of bad guys and good guys with a whole lot of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ up between the beginning and end. No drama, just blood, guts, and boobs.

Perspective from: Just under 75 hrs played, 120k DPS 75K HP - regular group of 3


I will definitely be a contributing piece of the playerbase who reluctantly walks away from the game. It's too bad too, it is a great game. Just seems like the team went into panic mode to overcome some obstacles they didn't foresee and totally blew it. I can't imagine this not being a dead game in record time.

I will level an alt to 30, and use the stash to transfer items back and forth between my farmer/crafter and PKer
I will level another alt to what ever level it is gear mods open up on the mod vender for electronics
I will level another alt to use the hub for every other resource for crafting
It's just really annoying to feel like you have to do this to enjoy the gameb due to some dumb changes to rules of the mechanics they've set post-release, to combat progression they feel is too fast

Pros:
  • This game could be awesome if you have a group of 4, and all of you are motivated to get dope gear
  • Bullet registration is on point
  • Runs smooth on sub-par machine (see bottom of review for specs)
  • Looks great
  • Story is great. The only way I know this is the incredible amount of voice acting you {get to, or have to, depending on your point of view} listen to while doing missions. Most text driven MMO's I just skip through. Being able to travel while having context fed to you is nice.
  • We have managed to figure out how to struggle through a challenger dungeon as a duo, so full groups are not mandatory.

Cons (in order of appearance):
  • Their PR (community manager) during the beta streams referred to going rogue as trolling. Not a great sign for people looking to PvP. Since then, several changes reflect PvP to be an afterthought, reinforcing the original idea PvP = trolling, is in fact shared with the vision of the game. The direct quote is "if you want to troll and go rogue you can do that, you know, but it's going to come with a price". No reward intended.
  • Due to the incredibly high stakes and extreme disparity of reward (basically none) if you do go rogue, be prepared to welcome 80% of the DZ with open arms, as they will come from all over to seek your anus.
  • For reasons stated above almost no one will go rogue; but if you try to hunt rogues, be prepared to desperately try to get the finishing hit on a downed guy in between a dozen other players with the same goal, to get the incredibly huge chunk of xp.
  • You will almost certainly never see an exciting fight in this game. Blowout or nothing. And I'm willing to wager 95% of the time someone goes rogue in this game it will be an accident. I don't think it'd be far off to say that same 95% of all rogue deaths will be from shots to the back while they were trying desparately to run away immediately after hearing the rogue gong.
  • Phoenix coin from bosses nerfed. No reason to farm bosses in DZ for Phoenix.
  • The only reason to go to the DZ currently is if you're looking for a particular gun that doesn't currently have a blueprint available, or, to farm for exploits (or both).
  • Exploit, the 2nd of the 2 reasons to go to the DZ. You can currently get an incredible edge with crafting materials, giving you the ability to endlessly roll items until you get the ones you want. This entails collecting items, using the stash, and an alt. What it does is turn 30 minutes into an entire normal days worth of work acquiring crafting materials.
  • The Xpac is releasing on Xbox first, PC & PS4 will get it 1 month later. With so little to do in the game, as a result of crippling any desire to PvP, it is very likely to be a dead game by the time that content is available.
  • DZ bucks are worthless, they didn't figure out a way to make these valuable once you become normal 30 DZ 30. The best thing you can do with them is prepare to go to lvl 30 at normal lvl 29 by running around vendor to vendor, making sure you have all the slightly better stuff.
  • The size of the map is small for an MMO. It might take 10m to run from the N side of the map to the south side, and from East to West it might take a little more. The DZ occupies a small chunk in the middle.
  • I'm typically the last to complain about frivolous expenses towards video games, and almost never grab season passes or balloon packages. I pre-purchased Gold for $100. I don't have to pay for the xpac. But with the xpac releasing on xBox a full month prior to PC, I can only imagine this game will be completely dead by then. So a total waste.

About 60 FPS with no feelings of input delay, a lot of settings on low, some on medium, the streaming setting thing on 100%.
