If you're like me, you probably discovered or heard of this game because of some video essay calling it a super "deep and atmospheric horror experience" or a comment on social media recommending it for the same reasons. I'm sure that to many people, it is that kind of experience, and i'm happy for them because i wish i felt the same.

The lore and monster designs are indeed great. The sound effects and ominous messages are truly terrifying (for a time, but i'll get to that later), and it all blends together to form a superb horror survival experience, as you crawl slowly in the darkness, scared of what may await you further in but forced to go forward to avoid starvation or the horrors behind you catching up to you. It's truly great.

But at some point you'll likely realize that you ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up on your first run, and you'd like to restart the game to do better. So you start a new run, play a differently generated dungeon and start gathering everything up. You do the things you shouldve done the first time, and overall your next run is looking much better. You get to the first safe save point, and start progressing futher than you got on your first run for about 15 mins, then die due to a coin flip. "Okay." You think "I'll just try again". Then you get a bit further and die to a knowledge check. Then you die to RNG after 12 mins of progression. You may even die to a bug a few times like i did. And this repeats many times, since you have very little control over what happens if you don't already know whats going to happen, and even if you do know, theres a very good chance you'll just die to RNG anyways.

To some this may reinforce the feeling of a brutal, dark world. But for me, it instead entirely removed all horror and atmosphere from the game. Instead of being scared of the dark, i started just charging forward knowing most of my success was down to knowledge checks and RNG, so why care about what happens when i have basically no control over the outcome anyways? Instead of thinking "Oh ♥♥♥♥ a big monster..." when i saw a new enemy i knew would be unbeatable, i instead just thought "For ♥♥♥♥♥ sake, this guy again? Guess i'll have to waste 5+ mins juking him... Great". Fear turned into frustration, and i started noticing how the game is basically a walking simulator, since the survival mechanics are very basic (There isn't much strategy, most food is aquired through RNG anyways so it's not like you can plan or ration things) and combat is just another knowledge/RNG check. So the only thing you really have control over is where you walk, which just isn't engaging gameplay.

Again, i'm sure that some people can look past this. But for me, the shallow and unengaging gameplay combined with frustrating repetition where you have very little control over the outcome completely obliterated any atmosphere or scare factor the game had.

This game has a major problem that is not addressed by most other reviews. The gameplay is very fun and the graphics are nice. The music is nothing special.

The various skulls provide great variety between the runs, and the abilities feel very satisfying to use.

Unfortunately, 80% of your runs success is determined by RNG. Before you call me a noob, i have reached the final boss multiple times, but i refuse to waste any more time hoping for a decent run where you actually get what you need. Keep in mind that in order to know whether a run is good or not (and thus whether you should just restart instantly or not) you have to play for an hour or so.

This creates an evil, repititive and boring cycle of starting runs for hours on end hoping for the 0.000001% chance that you might get something that can actually reach and kill the final boss. The reason you need to rely so much on rng is because most rooms and bosses have attacks that are nearly undodgeable, thus requiring you to have a certain amount of dps to finish them.

If you don't care much for winning in roguelites, and just want to have some fun, interesting and varied runs, then this game will be great for you. But being unable to finish the game without playing pointless runs that go nowhere for hours is extremely frustrating to me, which is why i'm giving this otherwise great game a negative review.

It has barely improved the awful stealth system from XCOM 2 and the game is clearly meant for stealth, so this is a big no for me.
