This deserves "Overwhelmingly positive" not "mixed". If that's why you're on the fence, go ahead and pull the triggers, haters don't know what they're talking about. This is a gorgeous, expertly crafted shmup. It runs in a variety of aspect ratios, it has a compelling story, gameplay is superb, I could not ask for more. It's getting dinged in reviews by purists who don't like the time based mechanics, but no rule says shmups cannot deviate from a set paradigm. If that were true we'd never have gotten games like Cotton or Captain Tomaday. As an afficionado of the genre, particularly on PC Engine and Neo Geo, this ranks up there with the best of 'em.

If the devs are reading this, consider taking your talents to a genre where it'll be more appreciated. Looking at the backgrounds in this game, at times, made me wish it was a Crimson Skies type game, a rail shooter, or perhaps a fusion of the two. Maybe a good excuse to recycle assets?

Superb. My one single complaint is that a unique triumphant sound effect is needed when collecting gems, not the same "ding" as gear collection. You bothered with a unique gem collection animation for Kiwi, but not an accompanying sound effect? Elementary game design, such sounds release that good dopamine my guy

I'm sorry to say this is a rare miss for the Toree series. I don't know how or why but the level design fell off in a big way, except in Toree Genesis, which is older content. Did the dev get someone else to make levels? They feel untested. Some of the booster rings, like in the pink tunnels, aren't close enough together to chain boosts.

There's a rougher, more amatuerish quality to the Jumbled Jam 2 levels, and it's a letdown. Toree controls very simply, so his games rely heavily on tight, clever level design to compensate, and the JJ2 levels aren't what they need to be.

You could smooth it over by including Jolly Jam + a Toree Saturn demo in this collection, and maybe a 3D hub similar to Sonic World from Sonic Jam instead of a 2D screen for picking which game to launch. If the player owns T3D & T2, they could appear in the hub as well, else they're boarded up buildings. I'd pay as much as $3 with these additions

As a final note, I'd like the menu screens to display correctly in 21*9, but that's the least of the issues tbh

I currently cannot remap the thumbstick, only the d-pad and buttons. This diminishes the experience on Steam Deck when playing in Tate mode. It is still a good game so I will recommend it anyhow.

Badly needs more than 2 bosses, and a proper ending cinematic. Actual gameplay however is superb. Frustrating, but forced me to learn the mechanics and become proficient in them, as a well made game ought to.

As many others have said, brilliant in the first half. Second half feels tacked on, it shifts gears abruptly partway through from metroidvania to a horde shooter kind of deal. Also, where's the VR support? No brainer for a game with this visual style. Still a recommend.

The options the player's given upon death are positioned just exactly such that if you click impatiently, you will restart the level, losing all progress.

Fresh, new, invigorating and innovative. I never cared for any Elder Scrolls games. This could be compared to them but is much more of an action-RPG, ala first person Zelda. NOT the tired old refried Tolkeinsian fantasy, many aspects of the world building will catch you off guard. Is it sword and sorcery? Well yes, there are swords and spells. But there are also neuron stars, ciphers, anti gravity ships, clockpunk machines. There's enough new here that it doesn't feel like the same old regurgitated fantasy tropes, but a wildly strange, alien and original world that's an absolute pleasure to explore.

Quakier than Quake. Deliciously rusty, bloody and cyborg body horrory. My go-to when I wanna be punished
