If you want to know what's actually going on with this game's multiplayer, it uses the Epic online ecosystem, because otherwise, Epic and Steam players would not be able to do cross-play together without some sort of third-party network the developers would have to build from scratch and manage. Which would also require an account you would need to link to your Steam profile anyway. The reason previous games did not require this is because they were not launched on the Epic store.

Literally all you have to do after selecting multiplayer is enter your birth date and tick a checkbox saying it's okay to link your Steam account to an Epic server account they generate for you automatically. That's it. You don't have to sign in or anything. It does not require a third party program, or even an account really. Perhaps the Japanese developers should have made this clearer, but I really can't seriously fault them for not accounting for the willful ignorance of their western audience.

Excellent game, the port has a few rough spots, but overall an enjoyable experience. I'm going to focus on the actual game, rather than focusing on temporary connection issues that have mostly been resolved already, and even at their worst were intermittant annoyances.

Graphics look good in general, although I think the port might have a few texture loading issues which cause low resolution textures to appear on a few things, although it's hardly noticeable in general gameplay. I also advise turning down volumetric fog if you're having any frame issues and haven't seen the dozens of other warnings about it. Otherwise, it's a reasonably pretty game with lots of color outside a few areas of some maps.

Gameplay-wise it's rock solid, building on the core Monster Hunter franchise gameplay while also greatly fleshing out the maps and how monsters move and interact within them. No more loading between every self-contained area or monsters aggroing almost the instant you step into its map. Combat rewards patience and good judgement about when to commit to an attack and when to pull back, and has a very good difficulty curve with only a few sudden spikes.

Storywise, the game is a bit simplistic, you're a monster hunter, you hunt monsters. Unskippable cutscenes locking you out from playing a mission with friends until you view them can be a bit grating. The characters are likeable, if uncompelling, and the main story is basically just thinly veiled excuses to have you go hunt some monsters. Forgettable, but gets the job done and mostly doesn't get in the way of what everyone is really here for: hunting monsters.

To wrap things up, this is an excellent game that I would highly recommend. If you're at all still on the fence about it after that, then maybe wait a few months and see if the last couple remaining issues with the port get ironed out, but they in no way truly detract from the fun this game can provide.
