Turn-based cover movement/combat, with a strategic-level world map. Interfaces can feel a bit clunky at times (two or three clicks to do something you feel should take one click), and the graphics are average, but the game play makes up for it in spades.

The focus is on stealth, and adept management of your assets in the world map layer. While it is possible to shoot your way through every mission the game is unforgiving (on a strategic level) if you do: you'll miss out on lots of free items, easy intel, and be constantly buying new identities for your agents and changing the location of your base.

The Cold War aesthetic is nice, and definitely works in favour of the "stealth before combat" game play.

Imagine Game of Thrones, but trade out the knights for mercenaries atop 30ft bipedal tanks, the Valyrian steel swords for Gauss Rifles, and the dragons for 100-tons of earth shaking 'Mech carrying enough firepower to level a city block (or core several 'Mechs) in seconds. This is the world of BattleTech. If that sounds even remotely interesting then BATTLETECH will not disappoint you.

Add to that the fact that developer Harebrained Schemes has a proven track record in delivering excellent, ongoing support and development for their titles, and top-notch storytelling. BATTLETECH is going to be a top tier experience for years to come.

[UPDATE]
With the releases of DLC packages FLASHPOINT, URBAN WARFARE, and HEAVY METAL, BATTLETECH has gone from a very good game to an *amazing* game.

It's got The Unseen. Nothing more need be said.

The way that this game handles it's more... sensitive material - or, rather, refuses to let you do anything about it - is atrocious.
