Nine Sols is a fantastic game that's criminally underrated. It has a unique, hand-drawn art style that's really beautiful. The game play is tough, but challenging. Sadly, the last boss is crazy difficult. Like fighting a samurai master in his prime with a wet noodle.

8.5 out of 10
Lies of P is an excellent Soulslike game, but it has its faults. 8.5/10 would be fair.

Pros:
  • Excellent graphics, music, and sound.
  • Fantastic weapon and enemy variety.
  • Compelling, understandable story.
  • Some very nice quality of life improvements over traditional Soulslikes.

Cons:
  • Massive difficulty spikes.
  • Capacity (weight) management is an issue.
  • No pause feature.

For brevity, I'll only go over the cons.

Massive difficulty spikes
I enjoy a challenge as evidenced by the games I've beaten, but some of the bosses in Lies of P are just too hard and not enjoyable to beat. I had to respec for Walker of Illusions because my motivity (strength) build just wasn't working. I ended up beating Walker with a technique (dexterity) build after the second attempt. Laxasia is just ridiculous - she performs a 12-hit combo and then barely pauses before starting another flurry of attacks. Laxasia should have similar stamina limitations as the player. Nameless Puppet's second phase is just completely unfair. Beating Nameless didn't feel good at all. By the end of the game I was just happy it was over.

A great Soulslike is hard, but if a player has a reasonable amount of skill and learns to counter most of the attacks, they can be beaten. Lies of P wasn't like that for me - I had to completely respec my character to progress, which feels lame.

Weight management
Keeping my weight under "slightly heavy", for vigor (stamina) purposes, was a slog. I ended up with a capacity of 41/99, and still had to wear an amulet to increase my capacity because I had to carry two weapons for the final boss fight (only!) due to durability concerns.

No pause feature
I'll never understand why so many Soulslikes don't allow the player to pause, but there really isn't a good excuse for this. It's like a cupholder in a car - it's NOT OPTIONAL. A phone call, a knock at the door, a child screaming - these are normal occurrences that a pause feature addresses.

Summary
Overall I think Lies of P is a shockingly good entry from a newcomer developer in the Soulslike genre. It isn't perfect, and some of the time it's totally unfair, but overall I would recommend this game.

Nioh is a fantastic game and I highly recommend it.

I have thousands of game to choose from and it takes quite a bit for me to actually invest the time to complete a game. I was looking for something similar to Dark Souls after having recently beaten it. Luckily I found Nioh and I'm very glad I did. For me the gameplay loop is much more addictive due to the loot gathering system. And the combat system itself is much more in-depth as well.

Microtransactions in the single player game? REALLY??? For shame!

I'm changing my review from not recommended to recommended. I've played through twice now - you don't need to buy anything (at this moment) to enjoy the game. Hopefully the publisher won't mess with the balance to "encourage" people to buy more in-game items.

Impressive amount of polish for an early access game. Really looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

Styx received middling reviews for control issues that were quickly addressed post-launch. Now it's an amazing, challenging, open-ended stealth game that rewards risk taking. I've had a ton of fun with it and even at full price it's a steal.

The biggest complaint I have about the game is the map, which isn't of much use. You really don't need it though, as there are always objective arrows pointing to your primary and secondary objectives.

Overall I'm having a hard time deciding between Styx, Deus Ex, Deus Ex HR, and Sniper Elite 3 as my all-time favorite stealth game. It's that good.

64 drivers need updating, 1 of which is missing. Click the "Fix" button. Wait, silently thinking, "Please don't break my system, please don't break my system ..." Screen flashes to black and back a few times (odd since my NVIDIA drivers are up to date), comes back every time. Several disconcerting prompts of "Windows doesn't recognize this driver, install anyway?" Pressed "Ok" each time. Prompted to "Reboot Now?", fingers crossed, press "Yes". System boots up, no more "chipset driver out of date" notifications, everything seems to work. Checked device manager, no warning or error icons. Ran DF again to see if any missing/out-of-date drivers were "rediscovered" - nope, nothing. Wow, impressive!

I recently built a new system and although it was working, I knew the drivers on the MB's website were woefully out of date. I had no choice but to use them since the specs weren't detailed enough to identify the correct version of the driver on the HW vendor's website. I also hate it when the HW vendors' "driver" software also installs "helpful" (dubious) services that run constantly and consume resources (when given the choice, I always prefer the "lite" or "driver-only" version).

I'm going to reinstall the OS from scratch soon and after installing the NVIDIA drivers, intend on using DF to find all of the other missing drivers. I'll update this review when I'm finished.
