Sonic Generations was already pretty good but, like, you probably already know that by now.

Shadow Generations is the best the boost gameplay has ever been and probably the best 3D Sonic game by far—at the very least, it's the most fun I've personally ever had with any game in this series. Movement physics, level design, and alternate routes are at their absolute peak here. Had a grin on my face the whole time and could not put the controller down. On my hands and knees begging Sonic Team to stick this kind of design philosophy for future games.

All hail Shadow.

Impeccable vibes, fantastic music, and just a bit of jank mark this as a true successor to Jet Set Radio. (Mostly) solid level design and weirdo Suda 51-esque storytelling are enough to pull past my minor gripes with the game sticking perhaps a bit too close to its roots - the combos and scoring system are just as simplistic as its 20+-years-old spiritual predecessor.

If you're looking for a deep, Tony Hawk-style extreme sports game, this ain't it. If you're a devoted JSR disciple and know what you're getting into, you'll have a blast.

An incredibly fun, incredibly content-stuffed fighting game that does a better job than any other game in the genre at appealing to both newcomers and long-time FGC diehards. If you don't like Street Fighter or fighting games in general, it probably won't make you a believer, but if you're willing to learn, SF6 is maybe the best game to start with. Scummy monetization for unlocking alt colors, music, and some avatar clothes hurts it a little bit.

Shout-out to whoever at Sega realized that people genuinely like these characters and it's fun to see them in stuff where their characterization gets to really shine. A really cute, really charming couple-hours-long story with fantastic art. Typos are a bit distracting, but for a free game I can't complain too much.

Come for the hysterical, intricate, incredible animation, stay for the wonderfully-designed platforming and sick as hell level design. Pizza Tower is a delight from start to finish.

It feels crazy to call out for GOTY contenders in January, but I can't imagine much else in 2023 is going to top the heights of Hi-Fi Rush. Brimming with over-the-top style and PS2-era Capcom-esque character, Hi-Fi Rush is an incredible new entry to the character action game canon that deserves to sit along the greats like DMC and Bayonetta. It has Nine Inch Nails and pause combos!

Game of the Year 2023. Tango deserved so much better.

An A+ soundtrack with a very solid mechanical core and some simple-but-fun movement mechanics. It's a little short and the variety of both weapons and enemies is on the weak side, but for a game that was clearly made on a budget it's easy to forgive. Hoping the positive reception this game's been getting gives a chance for a bigger, more fleshed-out sequel in the future.

A strong sendoff for one of the greatest heroes in video game history, albeit one that is somewhat bogged down by the move to a new engine leading to shallow combat and noticeably less content than previous entries. It's far from the best Yakuza game, but it's a solid finale. Sayonara, Kazuma Kiryu.

Unironically, genuinely, no hyperbole: the single best action game ever made.

Yakuza 0 is violent, tearjerking, heartfelt, and hilarious. It's a soap opera crime drama with an incredibly tight, well-paced story that's thrilling and entertaining throughout, and just as much it's one of the greatest sandboxes in video game history with an incredible amount of high-quality side content and some of the funniest sidequests I've ever played. It's genuinely incredible, and my favorite game in the series so far. I love Kamurocho.
