Community update, November 2022:
"Solo play is in its final stages of testing as we fix the last issues that remain. We aim to release this at Launch. If not, a patch shortly after that in December."

Response from Fatshark, September 2023:
"Right now being able to play solo with bots is not on our priority list, this could potentially change in the future though!"

Unless you can get this dirt cheap (90% or more discount levels of dirt cheap) AND have friends to play with, avoid.

The only thing that stands out (positively) in this game is the novelty of meat tubes for zombies.
Too bad the animations on them are absolutely awful, coupled with an overwhelming amount of bugs and out of whack hit boxes that quickly make said novelty tedious and stale rather than cool.

- Underneath the shiny little veneer of "good graphics", is an unpolished mess that constantly tanks in quality and gives you no ability to stop its internal control. Flagship PCs will still get massive FPS plummets out of nowhere, be plagued by stuttering and witness every meat tube turn into indistinguishable messes for textures alongside the world around them.
- Regional Servers don't exist (NA or bust) & private servers aren't allowed. And the developers answer to this? LAN or bust.
- You cannot kick people from a lobby.
- You need 3/4 votes to kick people from an active game. Voting is as cumbersome as it is unintuitive, leading to most players not taking the time (or the risk of dying) to kick someone if they even know how to. Nevermind the fact that if you've got ANY bots in your game, the kick will never pass.
- Quite the "lovely" community that will make you rethink the "but being able to kick would be abused" stance.
- Public Matchmaking is absolutely awful
- PVP matchmaking is nonexistant
- No pause in single player
- Single Player is not Offline; it is Online Only.
- You cannot rejoin a game after you've been disconnected.
- Zombies will hit you from more than two full character lengths away
- I've lost count of how many T-Posed zombies have completely wrecked an entire team
- Rat Pack audio does not play far more often than it does. It also has the most bugged out hit boxes out of every single enemy in the entire game, while simultaneously being the most dangerous (will wipe the entire team in less than 60 seconds if activated and not killed immediately; less than 30 seconds if on higher difficulties).
- Zombies treating the floor like an ice rink and moving faster because of it is extremely common
- The bulk of ones play time will be finding matches and dealing with bugs, rather than actually enjoying the game.
- Majority of the available guns are not impactful and they do not feel fun to use, something that does not change even with perks and class swaps. While this isn't extremely apparent on the easier difficulties, Insane/Extreme will have you using the exact same thing every single time because anything else is as much of a hindrance as it is a vastly inferior damage choice.
- The chore of having to level every single gun to level 6 just to get the silencer for it exists. Comes with the added bonus of silencers being varying degrees of effective on each weapon (the values of which are not listed and you're expected to figure it out on your own).
- The XL Horde modes are poorly designed nightmares
- The party A.I is a special kind of stupid that makes bots from late 90s games look like heroes; you'll spend more time fighting with the bot A.I than you will anything else, especially if unfortunate enough to be solo
- Every single special infected is a lazy L4D rip off that border on being carbon copies. While this in itself isn't a sin, the fact that every one of their designs lacks creative love, critical thinking or the slightest lick of originality is what makes it a painfully apparent constant.
- Full of game breaking bugs that the developers ignore every single patch
- Every single patch brings even more game breaking bugs that the developers will continue to ignore, including ones that make the game entirely unplayable when you run into them (looking at you, PS4 freezing bug that has been there for over a year)
- 0 mod support
- Data & Privacy Collection without full specifications as to what they're collecting is mandatory for online play
- Developers like to advertise things as free, then later charge you for them
- 12.49CAD for 3 extremely bugged missions & a special infected that is a Bull copy-pasta.
- 6.49CAD for a few skins in a game sorely lacking cosmetics

TLDR; I can't recommend an unfinished, seemingly abandoned game in good faith.
Otherwise a 6.5/10 lovecraftian text-based horror similar to Mansion of Madness or Arkham Horror. Held back by many obvious placeholders, a lack of content/is missing an entire game mode & has an MIA developer.

The Good
+ dog is boopable,
+ unique take on the genre that hearkens back to early text-based RPGs and choose your own adventure books with well-written stories/mysteries,
+ mostly true to form roguelike with short playthroughs,
+ the 1Bit/2Bit art system is as unique as it is impressive; a Junji Ito love letter in all the best ways,
+ monster design is flat out fantastic,
+ stays true to its lovecraftian roots and presents you a relatively grimdark setting: there is no defeating the eldritch and/or the old gods, only delaying them,
+ horror atmosphere & existential dread is on point,
+ game supports mods.

Worth Mentioning
+/- bit of a learning curve & not for those who aren't looking for a challenge (or a very tenuous tango with RNGesus),
+/- if you're looking for an in-depth combat system, look elsewhere,
+/- RNGesus has come to bless us with it's "balanced" presence. Now pray and get your goats ready at the altar, it's gonna be rough.

The Bad
- base game tends to get very repetitive, very quickly,
- lacking in both content and depth, with most replayability being tenuous fights with RNGesus,
- Multiple storylines are abandoned or otherwise unfinished (i.e the forest tapes),
- Ghost fights are a high stakes guessing game (with the absolute bare minimum indicators on if what you even guessed was right) that has absolutely horrid rewards given the risk and quickly become an auto-skip/auto-run,
- does not feel like it should be out of Early Access,
- things that should drastically change runs (what old god you chose, your timeline, your character, etc) have little to absolutely zero impact on each run,
- Developer missed a promised update time in March and has been MIA for about a year now (complete radio silence as far as I can find, though this does seem to be a trend for them),
- No Linux support & somehow manages to be incompatible with the workarounds/Proton,
- Missing an entire game mode,
- the UI leaves a LOT to be desired,
- while the art is well utilised and effective, a lot of it looks really unfinished/rushed. Some pieces will be well polished, while others seem extremely rushed or blatant results of last minute edits. It certainly doesn't detract from the experience, but it's unfortunately very noticeable,
- mod community isn't the most active & is primarily joke/meme mods.

Overpriced for what's currently there,
but overall an enjoyable game with physics that hate you.

I wish there was a middle ground option for reviews, rather than just a "Yes" or a "No".
Just like I wish I could completely recommend this.

Pros
+ it's pretty
+ fantastic sound track
+ unforgiving gameplay, demands your constant attention
+ unique approach with an interesting law/political system
+ uncompromising in their vision, not afraid to be a niche while refusing to pander to mainstream crowds

Cons
→ very simplistic for a city-building sim, lacks depth
→ locks players into specific play-styles with little to no variability between them. Multiple playthroughs become tedious and repetitive right out the gate.
→ You're told this is the last surviving bastion of humanity, but you've been given a bunch of people who would have already succumbed to this kind of reality/environment given their level of intelligence and overall temperament.
→ Complete lack of dual+ monitor support.
... windows key is disabled in game regardless of your personal settings, removing the option of using the built-in Windows solution to this kind of issue
... launch commands that would have gotten around this are disabled
... game client resets program's screen position whenever you change resolution in windowed mode
→ game locks your refresh rate to 50-75Hz
→ text is REALLY small on anything less than 1920 x 1080
→ windowed mode locks your mouse into the program, forcing you to still have to alt+tab.
→ you're given absolutely no ability to change UI or text size
... meaning the only solution for Dual Monitor, being make smaller than your resolution and drag over, becomes a squint fest

Worth for the extra colors alone,
though the purple is very close to pink with most glow stick variations.
