Such a beautiful game, please play it! At least give the demo a try. It's so good to see a big company like Capcom trying something that's not an existing IP and not a live service.

I've beaten this game three times now. I clearly have a certain fondness for it. That said, This is a recommendation, but not a blanket recommendation. Maybe even more than your typical soulslike, this game is not for everyone.

Combat is awkward in LOTF, frustratingly so. I wouldn't call it bad per se; it's plenty of fun when it's going well. New equipment or runes can make a significant difference in gameplay, which makes finding them fun. The game has a good difficulty curve, except for NG+ where it's kind of jacked--I found it trivially easy for like 95% of the game and then hit a huge spike with the last boss.

The story is awkward too. The story presentation is clearly meant to be one of the major ways this game differentiates itself from Dark Souls. I think the setting and the story itself are totally fine dark fantasy material, but it's all severely hampered by pretty much everything about dialogue scenes: writing, voices, and animation. Harkyn's half-assed tough-guy voice and demeanor kind of undercut the whole thing.

This game also clearly looks different from most other Soulslikes, which tend to go for a somewhat understated gothic look interspersed with fantastical environments and geography. The world of LOTF is very small and isolated, and environment and characters alike have a very overwrought look, like if you handed your middle school study hall doodles as concept art to a team of professional artists. Very Metal Hurlant, full of fantasy greebles. I actually kind of dig it. There's something about it I find oddly cozy. My inner teen is being catered to.

Like I said, this game is not for everyone. Even looking at Deck13's very next game, The Surge, you can see that LOTF is not their best work (and unlike this, I'd recommend The Surge to pretty much anyone). If you've played so much Souls that it's like a second home, I think this game can absolutely be a fun romp, and can give armchair game designers something to chew on.

I got this on sale and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I was pretty late to the party so I was only able to play single-player with AI squadmates. Once the campaign is over, there's really not much to do unless you can convince some friends to play it with you. I'd love to see this game make a comeback somehow. Also, since comparisons to Helldivers 2 are inevitable, I'll say this: they are similar only in the broadest strokes. Fireteam Elite is a much smaller-scale game with more compact, claustrophobic environments. Still, if you want a co-op shooter with an active community, you're gonna have to go with HD2 over this for now.

Absolutely beautiful game, visually but also, I dunno, spiritually. Very relaxing in casual play but quite rewarding when going for completion, especially on the more challenging maps. Chill out with this nice eco-sci-fi city-builder-and-then-unbuilder.

Pretty good! Mechanically, a step up from Deck13's previous action RPG, Lords of the Fallen. Thematically, it's a much better (and better-told) story in my opinion, and has the advantage of being one of the few science-fiction games in the genre.
