Fully realized after years of improvements, this is now a great sandbox that can surprise you on any mission. The Campaign is full of stuff to do and the career mode lets you make your own challenges and do your thing your way.

Modding is NOT necessary to get a great/amazing experience, though the YAML suite and Known Universe really do ramp the detail way up (but they can also make the "history that hasn't happened yet" lore-based things a little funky)

This is a stunning celebration of BattleTech's highest dramatic/narrative point and PGI absolutely knocked it out of the park.

Some of the UX is a little wonky, but performance was fine for me on a midrange PC (I did turn some settings down, and the game still looked great) and I really enjoyed the scripted mission and story.

The divergences from Heroes III is smart and distinctive-the game's less fiddly and less full of false choices, and is more straightforward about forcing specialization and playing the map. The best thing is it never wanders too far from what's familiar, so if you think something works like it works in Heroes III, it generally is kinda close to it.

Fast to play and nice music/aesthetic, it's a real winner.

It's cozy, sure, but the real gem is that the game is engaging on the brain and plays at a brisk pace.

Also the cat customizer is great. More games need a floof slider.

Game runs great for me and is just what was more or less promised in the teasers. Super happy to have a chill Stellaris spinoff with a ton of nice Star Trek flair.

As good of a release as you can get and impossible to put down.

The UI isn't perfect and the game has a ton of stuff going on that isn't clear unless you read the help and take your time playing, but it's a great game and a lot of fun to play.

There's no shortage of good. well-developed and deep roguelikes with reasonably modern interfaces these days, so any new contender will have to bring something new and interesting to the table. Sword of the Stars: The Pit succeeds in doing this with a strong survival horror element-not jump scares, but "real" survival horror: resource scarcity, agonizing inventory decisions, and steadily increasing toughness of the enemies tforcing player adaption to the changing situation.

There is classic roguelike RNG going on everywhere, so if you are turned off by random things happening this isn't the game for you. Completing a full successful run of The Pit is a pretty length endeavor as well, so if you are looking for a game that offers you a quick play, this isn't it either. If what you want is a scarcity-driven roguelike with a great interface and a well done setting and theme, The Pit will not disappoint.

I also highly recommend this game to experienced players who feel that today's games are easy to the point of boredom. The Pit is hard, and in a good way-at first it seems that you lose to randomness, but usually it's due to playing sloppy or greedy and this game punishes mistakes in a way that most games don't. You'll find all the challenge you can chew with The Pit, and then some.

King's Bounty : Dark Side comes in with a fresh viewpoint and good intentions-it is a big step forward over the dullsville that was Warriors of the North, but after starting relatively strong the game becomes a repetitive, challenge-free grindfest that saps your will to press on and finish the game.

The game has a few seemingly unrelated issues that come together in the midgame that really make it boring to play:

  • The game is not set up will to allow you to change out armies easily-you don't have anywhere to put your effective, proven army compositions in storage while you try out a new army type, and recruiting a new army from scratch is super expensive for most of the game. As a result, every fight plays out the same, and since you generally fight the same armies over and over, you wind up banging your head for hours playing the same fight with different permutations over and over.
  • Once it stops being expensive, it doesn't matter becuase the game becomes so easy (even on Impossible, the difficultly I played at) , the units are poorly balanced and while the game does its best to just overwhelm you with AI stack sizes it doesn't really matter, your armies still crush them due to abilities and stats.
  • The game is just too long, areas drag out and any novelty of being the bad guy is drained away as you get two pages of interesting story for every few hours of grinding fights.

I've played every KB game since The Legend, and I appreciate the fresh take on the story that Dark SIde is trying to do, but it is unfortunate that the rest of the game didn't get that same fresh coat of paint. I'm not opposed to playing games that take a long time to complete, but those games must make me change up my routine and present interesting strategy gaming play, which Dark Side does initially but fails to do as the game's systems scale out to larger numbers (in both stats and army size).
