I enjoyed the first one significantly more than the second. 2's story was better but I feel like 1 had a far better sense of discovery and the world was generally more interesting despite the lack of variety. Additionally 2 had some annoying difficulty spikes and other frustrations that I felt were the result of bad design more than anything else. FFYL mode comes to mind. I am aware that playing single-player in a co-op focused game is not the best way to evaluate a game but the first game did not have any of those problems.

1 also definitely has much better gear, again in spite of the fact that 2 has much more variety. I feel it was much better balanced regarding your chances of getting a cool, memorable item that you could use for a long time, while I've only seen a couple items like that in 2. Obviously people with hundreds of hours put into 2 will have seen a lot of cool guns and whatnot but the cool item frequency is noticeably lower in it.

Difficulty is uneven sometimes to the point of frustration but otherwise the game is great old-school fun.

So much fun just to fly around and blow stuff up. Hours and hours of fun even without playing the story missions
