The game is good, but disappointing. Not because of the micro-transactions, not entirely because of the performance issues (which are still unacceptable in this day and age). It's really because its a shell of what it could have been.

This game had a decade to cook and it's not a step forward, just a step sideways.

Fast travel still sucks when you have to backtrack, enemy variety has not increased, the vocations have had several features removed with the only real new content being the Trickster, which is not terribly interesting to play. The story itself feels rushed and half-finished at best, and the Dragonsplague mechanic for pawns is awful and not fun to play around.

I didn't play the first game for the story, for the enemy variety, or for the ease of exploration. I played it for the combat system, and for this game to come out after over 10 years (and getting an MMO WITH innovation) and show pretty much no improvement besides graphical fidelity and map size is beyond annoying.

Early Access Review
Brilliant despite still being early access - can't wait to see what a full release entails. The only real problems are the random generation sometimes leading to unwinnable situations, but it's still ultimately a fun game.

This game hates you. The level of detail, the absurdity of certain wands you can build, perk combos, alchemy, secrets, world gen, and physics would put this game in AAA+ tier for me.

But this game hates you. All spells, wands, perks, and HP upgrades are based on RNG. Level and enemy layout is based on RNG. Almost all enemies will kill you in 4 hits or less without protection or mobility (also RNG). Several materials in the game will kill you in seconds if you touch them. Certain materials and enemies (not that uncommon) will allow you to be 1-shot regardless of any perks or health you have. Fire and toxic sludge coat nearly every surface in every level, and both drain your health steadily.

Secrets? Impossible without a guide. With a guide? Highly improbable.
Alchemy? Never explained. The most useful materials are completely random, and also sometimes impossible to find and/or mix.

90% of the game's beautiful, fun, incredibly complex content will never be seen or achieved by the average player.

This game hates you, but if you can push past it, it's a very very interesting roguelike.

Really good game, but the 2 player co-op limit is really obnoxious. If they upgrade that this'd be god tier.

It's a really fun game with a ton of variation in playstyle. I started out as a Scoundrel Necromancer undead dude, sneaking around and backstabbing people, yet I ended up running my main character as a OP Knight build that I soloed the game with. It also has a GM mode where you can make entire campaigns to run through and test people's mettle against. Plus it's multiplayer.

Compare this to recent RPGs like Pathfinder Kingmaker, and you'll find it's top of the line. I highly recommend it, it's great!

Pretty good game, very complex at first but once you get the hang of it it flows pretty nicely.

Although it has it's failings, this game is a great RPG. The combat is weighty, and the physical classes are extremely satisfying to land hits with. You can really feel the huge impact that the skills hit with, and enemies respond accordingly. Landing a hit with a maxed out Arc of Deliverance for the first time is one of greatest moments of my gaming career.

The magic classes are no slouch either, with dozens of powerful spells that make it really feel like you've mastered the powers of the arcane. Whether you're calling down meteors or summoning tornadoes, you'll look cool as hell doing it.

Unfortunately, the game has some rough spots. NPC dialogue eventually get very repetitive, and in some extreme cases it is the same line over and over again. The story, while not terrible, is a little wierd at some points, and there are a lot of obscure mechanics involving quests and upgrade materials. Additionally, once you hit mid to end game, the gameplay becomes pretty repetitive, with the same couple enemies showing up over and over. Bitterblack Isles makes it a little better with endgame variety, but it too falls into repetition over time.

All in all, a pretty good game. I'M STILL WAITING FOR THAT SEQUEL CAPCOM.

An excellent game, made before Bethesda's decay into the semi-soulless mega company it is today.

Understandably for a 2002 title, the graphics are not great (though they were cutting edge at the time). If you can look past that though, you'll find an incredibly interesting and immersive game behind the fog. The story is rich and well-written for the most part, and the lack of requiring voice actors for every line means that there are hundreds of different questlines, all rewardingly complex and detailed.

The gameplay may be offputting to veterans of the series, due to combat relying mostly on stats rather than simply striking the target's hitbox. The melee options here are much more varied than in other titles, with weapons like spears, halberds, staves, and darts filling the roster. Magic is also more varied, tremendously so. Instead of a set of premade spells for every school, buying a spell off an NPC grants you use of its effects at custom spell makers, enabling you to combine dozens and dozens of effects, all with varying durations and potencies, into spells of your own design. Alchemy is also alive and well, enabling you to completely break the game and take your stats and resistances to ludicrous levels if you've got the cash and the skills.

The fact that there is no fast travel may seem like a downside, but all it really does is immerse you further into the setting. Rather than instantly teleporting outside of a town, you have to walk through town to find a travel NPC, who'll take you to select locations for a small fee. If your destination is too far off the beaten path, you might have to (gasp) walk there and see some cool sights along the way. There aren't any quest markers either, so if you're looking for an ancient ruin lost to time, you're actually searching the general area rather than walking right into it like you have the Ancient Ruins Travel Guide.

The game has an extremely active community, despite being 16 years old, so if you can think of it, there's probably a mod for it.

Overall, a terrific game I would recommend to anyone who enjoys RPGs. A must-play classic.

At best an OK game, as all Bethesda titles are now. It'll provide you hours of entertainment, but it will quickly become repetitive and boring. You can only hear "Another settlement needs our help" so many times before you want to blow Preston's head off with VATS, which you can't because 50% of the named NPCs in this game are essential.

There is no real choice to be found in the game's quests, you can say "Yes", "Sarcastic Yes", or "No leading to Yes" and that's about all the diversity to be found. The story is also complete garbage for the most part.

The game is also filled with bugs, another staple of Bethesda games. Numerous perks are broken or don't work right, and several quests bug out for no discernable reason. I've had at least 3 quest NPCs spawn inside the floor, with just their heads sticking out. Normally you could just fix these with mods, but since we have the Creator's Club now, modding your game with non-Creator Club mods will lock you out of achievements.

In short, buy this game if it's on sale or you've got cash to burn. It's not a great game, but it is OK and you'll have fun for a decent while.

Takes the best elements from every FROM title ever and combines it all into a great game. It's long, it's difficult, but it is most definitely the Souls/Bloodborne style that you love. This is a great sendoff for a series that I've loved from the beginning.

If you loved even the smallest detail from any of FROM's games, then you'll love every bit of this.
