Unfortunately i can't speak for the quality of the gameplay itself, as it keeps crashing at the loading screen at 57% without fail. (Tried 5 times, froze 5 times. 2 out of these 5 attempts even ended in a bluescreen and my PC crashing upon trying to close the frozen game)
Quick google search revealed that this is a problem that has been known for quite some time, and occurs on some systems but still hasnt been fixed.
Alas, fiddling around with the options also didnt work for me

Thus, though it pains me to do so, i can't recommend this one. I love the Spellforce Series and strongly encourage you to check out the Original Spellforce:Order of Dawn (especially with the expansions) or even Spellforce II.

If you're going to get this one, just be aware that you might have to issue a refund if you are one of the unlucky people that experience the above mentioned issue.
Thankfully, this is steam - so getting a refund isnt a big hassle.

TL;DR:

+ Decent spectacle fighter with regular gameplay variations
+ Amazing Soundtrack
+ Original, thought provoking Story....
- ....that can't quite live up to the hype surrounding it
- Lackluster PC port

A very good game, that deserved a better PC port, but that i can still wholeheartedly recommend.

In-Depth

Alright, let's get into the nitty and gritty of it.

Gameplay

Right out of the gate, NieR: Automata doesnt quite look like your "run of the mill"-spectacle fighter. That's because it isn't...not quite anyways.
NieR regularly tries to vary things up - which means sometimes it's just the camera angle that changes drastically, while the core gamplay stays the same, while at other times, it straight out (d)evolves into a Shoot'em up/Bullet Hell or puts heavier emphasis on it's Jump'n Run elements.
  • Action Combat:
The regular third Person action combat/spectacle fighting is pretty good. I dont think it can quite measure up to the likes of "Bayonetta" or "Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance", but that doesn't make it bad by any means.
It's fast paced, it's fun and it feels rewarding.
Alongside all of the regular elements you'd expect from any game of the kind e.g. Light & Heavy attack+combo variations, Charge, Dodge/Counter - it also adds a Pod that is accompanying the player and a customizable set of chips.
The Pod, is basically an additional element that allows you to fire at the enemy and manipulate the battlefield. Obviously this increases the depth of the fighting system while raising the skill ceiling, since you have to control the pods aim and skills, alongside your characters movement and fighting.
The aforementioned chips allow you to add various effects to your character and weapons. (examples would be Increased Movement speed, lifesteal, shockwaves on weapon attacks, bonus HP and many more)
This alongside multiple pod programs and a sizeable selection of weapons allows for some crazy builds and vastly different ways to experience combat in NieR.

  • Combat Variations:
A lot of the time, the game will throw curveballs at you, this is true for the story as well as the gameplay.
One moment you're slicing enemies apart left, right and center, and the next moment you suddenly find yourself in a bullet hell à la Gradius or Ikaruga.
To me, mixing things up like that was unnecessary, but i guess it kinda grew on me, and it added it's own charme to the game.
And hey, the sidescrolling-jump'n run, top-down-shooting and bullet hell parts are well done so why not, right?

Graphics

Okay, this one should be done fairly quickly as i dont think it's that important nor is there much to say.

  • General:
In general, the graphics are definitely nothing amazing, even compared to the time of it's release. Texture work isn't great, low LoD and even at max settings jagging is easily visible (some of this is related to the port though see further below)
  • Animations:
That's it's redeeming point in this section. The animation quality is absolutely stellar in my opinion. Walking, fighting, falling - everything looks great.

Story
(Spoilerfree)
  • The Main Story
Let me start by saying that the Story and and off itself is good! And if you're one for philosopical question, the meaning of life and all that stuff, you're gonna have a field day with this one.

  • Multiple Playthroughs
I have to start with this, cause i will refer to that mechanic in the other sections quite a bit. Now the game is centered around being played through multiple times. Playing through NieR once and then stopping, is like opting out of Skyrim after you've talked to the greybeards.
Basically, you haven't seen anything yet.
This of course allows for some very unique story telling and is a rather original way of doing things. And the game makes good use of that.

  • The Characters
The 3 main Characters are all likeable in their own way. Personally, i wasn't a big fan of 9S but even he grew on me during the duration of the game.
Sometimes the way characters act or behave seem out of place or a little nonsensical, but usually you get to understand their motives through information you gather in a later playthrough - again, really cool.

  • Side Actvities
There's a good amount of stuff to do outside of the main Story. Side Quests ranging from "Gather x of this" to "Investigate this area for clues" (that is usually tied to very intriguing tidbits of story and lore). Unfortunately, barely any lines in these sidequests are voiced, which is a shame. I feel i would have had more of an emotional connection to the characters had they talked more. (Especially with each other)
Aside from those rather bland quests though, there are quite a bit of secret Areas and Bosses to discover that are a blast! And exploration in general is rewarded with hidden chests that will usually contain new Weapons, or strong items and new chips.

  • The Problem
Okay, here's my only real gripe with the game itself. This may not be a concern to you, but it certainly was to me. The huge hype surrounding this game, that tends to make you expect too much.
Yes, especially the "final" ending is a very unique experience, and i'd be lying if i said it didnt get me to think about "the meaning of life" and "what it means to be human", but i wouldnt say i was particularly invested in the characters or the overall Story itself.

Soundtrack

The Soundtrack is absolutely amazing. Seriously, just add it as additional DLC already so i can easily buy it.
In terms of Voice Acting, i had no problems with the English Voices, and the Original Japanese are obviously also good.

The PC Port:
We've had worse....but we've definitely had better too. The main issue is, that you'll likely have to fix resolution issues with FAR as the game itself doesnt support all resolutions (although it pretends it does).
So your f.e. "1920x1080" resolution is actually just an upscaled lower resolution resulting in ugly, easily visible jagging - even at max Anti Aliasing.
Also, without the mod above, cutscenes will likely run at a crappy framerate. Pretty funny when the actual game looks and runs better than pre-rendered cutscenes.

Bottom Line
I can recommend NieR: Automata without hesitation. In my opinion it isn't the Paradigm Changing Masterpiece that i got the impression it would be, but it's a great game, that i would not want to have missed.
If i had to give it a rating, although i am not a big fan of that - probably an

Wow. So, this one came in as a complete surprise. I didnt expect much when i bought it, but boy was I wrong.

TL;DR:
Pros:
  • Intriguing Story
  • Good, genuinly funny writing
  • Tons of choices, that also have an impact
  • Unique and likeable characters
  • Fully voice-acted
  • Decent length
  • Nice Artstyle & Soundtrack

Cons:
  • Abrupt, unsatisfying ending
  • Minor: Artwork occasionally gets re-used

In Detail:
Pixelfade. Never heard of that Developer before, nor about the game itself. So I expected a pretty run-of-the-mill Visual Novel...This was not what I got.

  • The Characters
The character cast in ACE Academy was great across the board for me. The romancable characters are unique and differ heavily from each other, but all of them are very likeable.
Other characters such as your best friend, or your little sister etc. are just as loveable.
The Dynamic between them is great and the game manages to convey a real sense of belonging. You feel like a real part of the group.

  • The Story
The Story is what I would probably classify as mildly interesting. That doesnt mean it's bad, far from it. For a VN it's actually rather intriguing and does the job well enough.
It's nothing revolutionary, but compared to a lot of other VN I would say it is above average.

  • Romances
Now as mentioned before there are 4 romancable characters.
Each of them has unique traits but all of them have very rewarding and heartwarming moments in their respective routes.
Through the excellent writing the progression of these romantic relationships also feels pretty natural and not forced.

  • Game Length & Choices
After doing all the routes I capped at roughly 20 hours. Now, I will not lie, I didnt really check my playtime after I first reached the ending , but it should last you a good 10 hours.
However that is only if you play through it once, there are a lot of reason to play through it several times.
At the start of the game you name your MC and select 1 out of 3 personality types. Depending on your type you will get unique dialogue choices as well as different outcomes in some events.
In additon to that you also have the above mentioned different romances that I encourage you to explore.
Lastly this game throws a ton of choices at you from the get go.
Some may just slightly alter a dialogue, but there are also a lot that affect the story and that have actual impact.
One important thing that I'd like to mention here is, that you also have the choice to be a total douche.
You may end up alone doing so, but hey - you can!

  • The Ending (Spoilerfree)
Without revealing too much - The ending is very sudden. I expected at least 1 or 2 hours more before reaching it.
Alas the story came to a "close" pretty quickly. Now I say "close" because it is somewhat of an open ending.
That's the only real gripe I have with it.

Overall:
It's funny, has great characters and gives the player a lot of choice, but the ending is a bit of a letdown.
I'd say if you have an interest in VN this game is worth full-price. On a sale I would lable it as a must-have without hesitation.

Kaori is best girl!

About the Developer:
I do want to take a minute to write about the developer. As mentioned above, I didn't know about them before.
But because the game was so enjoyable I checked them out a bit (mostly to see if and when part 2 is coming out) and I was very pleasently surprised.
Originally only 2 romancable characters were planned. 1 more was added before the Kickstarter stretchgoal was reached and another one was changed to also be romancable due to popular demand.
I also checked out a dev stream they hosted and they seemed genuinly passionate about what they were doing.
I'm writing this for 2 reasons;
  1. I like what I found out about them. Listening to customer feedback is really important in my opinion and that is what they are doing. I dig that, and I want them to be successfull.

  2. The ACE universe is much bigger than what is in the first game. But currently there are no plans for a Sequel.
That's a nono! I want them to get more money and make the sequel happen! Do it!

This is the first episodic Telltale game that I just cant recommend in good conscience.

TL;DR:
Cons:
  • Too short considering the price
  • Choices basically don't matter
  • Exploration is kept to a minimum this time
  • Hallucinations ruin the flow of the game and are aggrevating

Pros:
  • If you like the Telltale-Style and can see past the cons here's more to quench your thirst
  • Some VERY satisfying moments

In Detail:
Now Telltale Games have always been more Interactive Movies than actual games, that for the most part merely gave you the Illusion of choice. So is and does this one.
That's not my problem with it, I can dig that. At least the choices at the end of an episode somewhat matter and they usually present the Story very well so that I can forgive choices not having an actual impact.

But in this particular one Michonne has hallucinations that last throughout the entire game.
They are annoying, they are pointless and they completely break the flow of the game.
When I am fighting for my life and suddenly everything is quiet and i see my daughters running around, that to me does not evoke any emotional response except for anger and thinking "aww not this crap again!"
I guess it was supposed to add to the story....somehow?! In my opinion, it completely fails to do so. It does not make me care about her daughters.
It actually makes me hate them. Dumb things happen due to Michonne not moving because of her hallucinations.

This lead to me being more angry than enjoying the story unfold before me.

Furthermore, I know this is a mini series, and that's okay. But if you're gonna make it that short you should probably adjust the price you're asking for it. This game will last you about 4 hours. So if you want me to pay almost 4€ per hour of enjoyment it better be pretty damn good.
This isn't, it's okay at best. Although i will admit that it has 2 or 3 instances where it is very satisfying!
It is also worth noting that the cloud save does not seem to be working correctly. I had to replay most of Episode 1 because I quit inbetween and apparently it was never saved. Considering you cant even skip forward in conversations that was rather tedious.
Lastly I actually got some major framedrops at parts, which is weird. Never had that in a Telltale game before and I'd think if my PC can handle DA: Inquisition, Witcher 3 and the likes it shouldnt have a problem with something like this.

Overall, if you can look past the cons, you might want to pick it up on a sale. Otherwise I recommend skipping this one.

Oh my god, how have I not yet written a review for this amazing Game?!

Dragon Age manages to combine an Epic Story, a great tactical combat system and superb presentation almost perfectly in a single Game.

I'll try to keep this somewhat short:

Why is it good?

  • Player Freedom: You get to choose Gender, Race and Class for your Hero, each with a Unique Starting chapter and during the game, your choices MATTER. It will affect how people react to you, how a Quest ends etc. etc.

  • The Combat System: It is a Party based Combat system that can be paused at any point, to give Commands to your party members. While that doesn't sound special - the way it is set up makes it Special. Not only are the different abilities interesting and add a lot of tactical depth, but these abilites can also interact with each other in 2 ways.
    1. Indirectly - for example your Mage freezes several opponents in Place, so another Party member can easily hit an AoE ability
    2. Directly in the form of Combos - For example combining different elemental spells to form the Thunder-Blizzard of the Century

  • Engaging Story and Presentation: If there is one thing Bioware really knows how to do, it's how to create an interesting World/Lore and present it. The World really feels alive and coherent. There is so much material for the player to read into the Lore if he is interested and the presentation is just amazing. The cutscenes are well animated (as is pretty much anything considering when it came out), the voice acting is stellar across the board and the sound assets as well as the music itself is nothing to sneeze at.

  • Characters & Romances: A huge part of Bioware games such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age etc. is the ability for a Player to start a romantic relationship with a party member. To me personally, this is even better in Dragon Age: Origins, than it was in Mass Effect.
The Characters in both games are of course very unique and likeable, but when it comes down to it, i'd choose Morrigan or Leliana over Tali or Liara any day of the week.
Also characters that you cannot woo are amazingly well done overall.
There will be some that you love, there will be some that you just wont ever really understand, and there are some that you will HATE. As it should be - and yet, if you put in the time you might figure out that a villain that you hated, actually had really good intentions.
So overall they feel really well fleshed out, they feel like actual Persons with real emotions.

  • Replayability: Due to the many different choices, origins and endings that you will experience throughout the game, it is very likely that you will have a second and third playthrough. (Hell I probably have like 20 different chararcters at this point). In addition to that, the game can be really challenging on higher difficulties - so maybe you want to try and beat it on the Legendary difficulty later on.

  • Mods: While the modding community isn't very active anymore, it has been in the past and all their work is still available. Additional armors, better textures, new quests, Locations, characters, the ability to skip parts of the game (♥♥♥♥ the fade!), nude- and ahem "love"-mods. You name it!
They add to the already huge amount of time that this game will take out of your life. But it was worth every minute if you ask me :)

What's bad about it:

  • Slow Combat: This is pretty much the only thing i can think of. The Animations in Combat might feel slow to some people. They kinda did to me at first and were made faster in Dragon Age II and Inquisition. It's probably best to quickly check it in a Youtube Video - see if it bothers you. It's by no means unplayably slow, but everything kinda feels like it should just be a tick faster.
  • Achievements: Now i dont really know if this can be counted as a negative thing for most people, but i feel bad only mentioning the combat System. So the game does have achievements - however they are not supported by steam. If you decide to play it on Origin, they will show up and you can brag to your friends there, as i am sure we all have a huge amount of friends on Origin....

This seems like i am really biased, but that is the games fault because it is just THAT good. There really aren't many bad aspects that stood out to me.

Overall this is a game that I believe everybody should have experienced at least once. It is certainly better than it's sequels, and to me, it even blows the Mass Effect series out of the water.
Sale or not - this game is definitely worth it's price

TL;DR:
5 Hours in this game will have a bigger emotional impact than other VN's will achieve over the course of 50 hours.
I genuinely believe this is one of, if not THE best, Visual Novels ever created.

In Detail:
I really don't know how to write a Review that does this game justice.
This Novel knows exactly how to pull at your heartstrings - then TEAR them apart - and re-attach them better than ever before.
The true ending of this game is without a doubt, one of the best twists ever created.

Now I'm not usually emotionally affected by Media.
Marley & Me, Grave of the Fireflies, Bridge to Terabithia etc. didn't shed a single tear and wasn't even close to it.
This game? Bawled my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ eyes out like a little baby.
Probably because most movies try to make you cry through sadness, whereas this mostly got me because of the wholesome moments and happy ending (if you do things right).

I really don't know what to say. My favourite visual novel by far, beats Grisaia, Aokana and literally everything else i've read before.

Final Verdict
Absolutely recommend this to anyone with the slightest interest in Visual Novels.
Hell, I'd recommend it to people that don't like Visual Novels too - this will probably spark your love for them

At only 5-8 Hours, I think everyone should give this a go. You have so little time to lose and such an amazing experience to gain.

While it can be a bit hard to understand the rules at first, it is damn rewarding once you get the hang of it.

Ever wanted to have a minotaur with tentacles and claws to kill some fabolous elves or stinking goblins? Well then this is the game for you.

Even for people that normally don´t play sport games worth a look. Breaking the opponents players ribs, or killing them on the pitch is just too damn fun!
