Each day has two phases - a daytime where you are in your shelter, controlling characters, cooking meal, crafting tools like device to catch rain drops for water, mouse traps for additional source of food or even trading with someone ho came into your home. Someone can ask you for help. A night is scavenging time because it provides more cover than daylight so you don't get shot by a sniper. Choose a scavenger to go outside, choose the destination and explore other places for supplies. Some of those places are guarded, somewhere you can find people willing to trade. Be careful, during night time someone may rob your own shelter if it is not guarded.

Each of your action evaluates the mood of your group. Someone needs your help and you don't? Your characters will be sad. If you help, they will be happy that you are still humane even in this situation. But you take risk of a trap or getting shot. Also if you will rob someone too much, your characters will feel shame.
