It's a very good game for spending a long time on a explore->loot->upgrade->build gameplay loop if playing PVE, although it would be nice to have an option for NPCs other than zombies and wild animals to fight (like human NPCs using firearms for instance). The default maps are ok, but this game really shines with curated maps such as Arid which is almost like an entirely different game.

This is surprisingly good for an obscure 1999 FPS game. Don't expect to hear much Cypress Hill except for like 4 different 5 second loops, but the gameplay is solid and challenging, the story is... there, nice levels to explore with a few secrets sprinkled around and most amazingly you can have NPC followers that can actually keep up and not be useless or annoying!

Campaign is pretty short, but if you pace yourself and backtrack for supplies there's about 8 or 10 hours here. Not much replay value unless you are a masochist and want to play it in the top difficult setting, since the story is a generic revenge tale of a jerk taking out a slightly bigger but much more successful jerk while basically barhopping from one town to another. You'll like the Kingpin if you liked Pulp Fiction because he is a shameless ripoff of Marcellus Wallace, even regurgitating most of Mr. Wallace's lines.

Difficulty is challenging and will punish you if you do not apply any strategy. The enemies do hitscan and can chew you up quickly, especially in groups. It's wise to hang back and either bait them through a choke point or pick them off at range, especially towards the end of the game with the HMG which will quickly become your best friend. Supplies are generous if you take the time to look around, make some effort to conserve and remember where to backtrack to restock. Failing that, there is a money/store mechanic that can help out. You can select the difficulty too, and I recommend medium in particular. The higher difficulties are more frustrating than fun but that's just me.

Enemies are capable of pretty advanced level nagivation but usually just attack head on. They are pretty spongy and can be frustrating to deal with. If they seem to be soaking up an unusually high amount of punishment remember that they can wear armor just like you do.

All games should look to this one for how to implement companion AIs that can navigate their way around and be a genuine help. It's a real wonder how this game did it so well when it's such a common failure point for others to this day. If you are having a hard time, don't hesitate to recruit or hire some backup, but if they get hurt you may be stuck waiting a few minutes for them to passively heal back up. A small price to pay!

In terms of actually running, I did encounter some crashes. It seems to happen a when there is a big fight between NPCs, but did not occur very often. I have also run into an issue where it zooms in on about 30% of the screen in fullscreen mode, rendering the game unplayable. It worked windowed, but the bottom of the screen was still cut off so I never had any idea how much health I had. I made do.

Graphics are dated to be sure. The character models show where and how badly they are hurt but the texture resolution is too poor to make any of that out. There are surprisingly good shadows and ok-ish lighting. It is a game from 1999 after all. Some models look a bit goofy, but that could be art direction as much as low resolution. Expect to see a lot of model warping too, as was typical for this game engine. If you are particularly picky about graphics then maybe old games aren't for you anyway.

Overall, it is quite good and if you like older games I think it is definitely worth a playthough.

There's a lot of give and take with this game, but for most people I wouldn't recommend it.
If you like games that are slow-paced, atmospheric and involve a lot of exploration you will like this. Think of it like a point-and-click adventure with some minor FPS elements.
If you want some action, it's there but it is far too spread out and most of the game moves at a sluggish pace.
If you want some story, again, it's there and it's presented competently but it's pretty simplicstic and overall too short.
If you want to free-roam, there is a bit of off-the-path exploration and some secrets/bonuses to find but for the most part the game railroads you down the plot and most of your decisions don't matter.
If you want horror, there are a few spooky sequences and diseased dead people but the assets get recycled so much you get over it pretty quickly.
If you want a survival experience there are supplies to scavenge and manage, but in the middle of the game you're practically tripping over food/aid/batteries/ammo and the game is too short for them to become scarce or critical.

It is certainly an interesting game and it definitely has some strong moments, as well as a few intereting and unique puzzles to solve but it can't seem to commit to any particular direction. I was expecting something a bit more like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., but I got something closer to Dear Esther. I still enjoyed it, but see little reason to go back.
