Nearly 100 hours already played in early access. Very addictive... many late nights can be blamed on this cute little game!

You build and tweak your deck as you go, adding/removing cards, finding potions, and collecting game-changing relics. Great system that's so easy to understand but can keep you learning new things for years to come.

Pro-tip: Relics are everything! The right combination, along with the right cards, can make all the difference. I recommend always going for "?" map nodes when you can, and I always pick the path to the boss with the largest number of them. Sometimes they are a straight up fight, but when they're wordy (as well as adding much flavour and fun to the game), they can often result in you getting relics / money to buy stuff / other rewards with very little risk compared to a fight.

I'm sure I'll still be hopping into this game for years to come, good job devs!

Currently suffers from major performance issues, which half the playerbase are suffering with, trying unsuccessfully to find workarounds for... and the other half who've cranked up their res multiplier to make it look reasonable and are somehow able to cope with the massive amounts of reprojection / low framerates without getting a migraine.

F4VR could be a gamechanger for the industry, but only if the developers sort out the performance issues and make it a premium experience on first boot-up.

I've wasted over 4 hours trying to tweak the game to be playable without success, so am now waiting with baited breath for Bethesda (or more likely, the community) to sort it out.

Cannot currently recommend this buggy mess, but if and when it's fixed would be happy to change my review. Still desperate to cap some raiders!

Update 3/3/18: There has been one major patch since release, which doesn't seem to have improved much performance-wise on my GTX 1080, so I'm still waiting to play it. I really hope they manage to sort out the performance problems, otherwise it'll be a massive waste of potential.

Started game, warped to first new star, did some mining, warped back to blue star to refuel, but my hands wouldn't unfurl (permanently clenched fists). Couldn't select anything in the game so had to force-quit it from the desktop.

In the forum I see this bug has been live for at least two weeks (on Vive hardware) and isn't even marked as early access, so I requested a refund. Maybe they broke something there when implementing the Rift hardware?

Nice ideas, maybe give it 6 months or so and see if they work on it.

Also, LOL at the auto-translated dialog...! xD

Update: 3 Years On:

I periodically go back to ESO when a new expansion is released, and feel my review below is still very accurate. In my opinion, this is a great PvE game if you only have one character (more gets to be a chore). I haven't tried much PvP but imagine it's very competitive at max level. I'm enjoying the new Necro class, but am a little sad he doesn't have any persistent pets :'(

-----

+ Nice action-combat system, like Neverwinter.
+ Good graphics.
+ No monthly sub required (though the "ingredients bag" is only available with the sub and is extremely useful).
+ World quests and areas aren't level-gated. You can go where you fancy, play with friends of different levels, and always be earning xp.

- World quests and areas aren't level-gated. Strangely, this also makes the world feel very flat. You lose a sense of progression (since no areas are harder than any others), and don't feel your character become more powerful.
- Grindy.
- Replayability not great. There are three different starting areas, but the main quest and guild quests are all the same and get very repetitive if you want to make a few characters.
- Officially supports "animation cancelling" - Though not crucial, this is a weird system you do need to learn if you want to do the maximum DPS, important for PvP or even high end PvE. Personally I find it a bit cheap and nasty - the artists spent a lot of time on the animations, don't make us cancel them! :P

Even though it's graphically simple and has a basic premise, this is one of the most addictive games I've played. More than once I've booted it up at midnight for "a quick half hour before bed" and still been there at gone 4am... hard to explain why, but if you're remotely interested in space/strategy games, I'd suggest giving this a go. The perfect "indie" game, imo!
