Replayed the game and forgot how hard it was (and was also amazed I had been able to beat it many moons ago). Once you get the controls down remember to remember your lock-on button. Coming from some games that have auto lock when new enemies appear or something similar, this does not auto lock so you gotta be quick to make sure you do that otherwise the camera WILL KILL YOU. Amazing game though!!!

Just beat this on medium difficulty. I wanted to read both positive / negative reviews to get a sense of what others thought (that will not affect my review) before I jotted down some thoughts.

PROS
- This game truly captures some of the great HL1 moments. As an avid HL fan, I loved the feeling of being back in Freeman's boots / HEV suit
- Graphics through the Source engine are just awesome. Everything for the most part has nice polish, great graphics, good detail and a sleek look - I recommend scooping up some weapons from the workshop as it makes things nicer and more fun (I got the 900 RPM boost for the machine gun and a couple mods / utilities)
- Combat is still engaging and tricky if not careful - you can easily get swarmed or one shotted if you aren't paying attention - I think the most continuous deaths I had were around 4 or 5 before I was able to beat certain encounters
- Voice acting is still great though I wish they would have done more with scientists / Barney (I didn't hear the "I owe you a beer" line, maybe I missed it)
- Level design is a crapshoot, while it's been FOREVER since I played / beat hl1 - level design and where to go was never truly an issue for me. Ya I would flounder for maybe 5 or 10 minutes to figure out the next path to go but it just takes some creativity (will touch on this in the cons as well) - I REALLY loved Xen despite how long it took, absolutely gorgeous and filled with wanderlust

CONS
- Enemies do a lot of damage, like a lot. Few hits from a Vort or a soldier and you can be in the red if you don't have any body armor
- I barely used my C4 / Tripmines though I did use grenades as much as I could for groups. Tripwires were situational after I died and respawned and knew where I wanted to put them
- Not a lot of ammo here and there, will have to be choosy who you want to kill and with what guns. Xen has a few ammo caches here and there but the final boss fight is no issue since there is essentially multiple areas with repeatable ammo and armor kits
- Puzzles in this version aren't overly complicated but some of them are not as intuitive as you would think. Xen being the biggest culprit here, while I did love it, it was TEDIOUS as hell. A lot of platforming and making sure you line up the boost jump and also some puzzles that have little to no guidance and you just gotta figure out yourself - I will admit I did have to Noclip a few times due to backtracking issues and locked doors and also to get an idea of what I was missing because the actual solution for what I was doing was not obvious (at least at first to me), once I figured out what I had to do I went back to where I started the noclip and did it the "right" way.
- Some texture issues here and there, when zooming with the crossbow sometimes a black screen would flicker, this usually happened at the end of my shot so it didn't typically impact my firing but it was annoying
- Game crashed for me 2 times due to "cannot load texture" error, when I relaunched it took me right to where I was and didn't happen again (the 2 crashes were about 5 hours apart and in two totally different areas of the game)

All in all, I loved this and would highly recommend. Ya there are bugs and some graphical issues but it's totally worth it. Would love to see an "Opposing Force" and "Blue Shift" version of these!

Very fun game, very immersive and great story / dialogue. Combat takes no time to learn but honestly forever to master. The little bits of parrying and blocking and knowing when to dodge and be offensive (using offense as defense) took me forever to finally accept as that is against my normal "gamer mind". Saber combat is fun and engaging and it's gratifying to one-shot stormtroopers (regular ones) as that fits with the saber combat style.

Great game, would HIGHLY recommend. This game does try a little to emulate dark souls with the dying mechanic and limited healing items but it definitely is not close to that in the frustration department. If you like Dark Souls and would like...say...a dark souls "lite" with sabers, this is the game for you!
