This is an interrogation simulator -- you're given a crime to solve and question persons of interest, with choices of words and phrases to choose from as you pursue your line of questioning. The concept is great and during the beginning of its release the developer was clearly passionate about this project, pushing constant updates with new content and fine-tuning the parse vocabulary. However, updates have fallen off, with only one update in the past year.

That said, at the current cost of admission of less than a dollar, the game is still well worth the buy.

This is not a HOG. It is an adventure game with a few HOG sequences. It also has time-limited action sequences and traditional point & click puzzles.

It's a good game. Everything is polished to a high sheen: the level of detail, the cinematic sequences, the beautiful art, the soundtrack; it all speaks to high production value and a game that was made with care. The pacing makes the game seem short, but for a cinematic adventure game it is pretty long.

Alternating between hidden object scenes, puzzles, and action sequences makes the gameplay loop much more engaging than a typical HOG, and the story is engrossing, if not predictable.

A very strong recommendation for any HOG fans who want something a little more complex, or a point & click adventure fans who don't mind the occasional hidden object scene.

There's a sub-genre of games that I like to call voyeur sims -- these include walking simulators like Gone Home, strategy-puzzlers like the Orwell games, and story-driven phone-sim games like SIMULACRA.

These voyeur sims fuel something visceral in me by allowing me to be a peeping tom in someone else's life; overcoming personal privacy as a game mechanic is somehow uncomfortably fun, even when the actual gameplay is minimal.

SIMULACRA is one of the better voyeur sims and one of the better games I've played this year. Like other phone-sim games like A Normal Lost Phone and Replica, it starts with a mysterious cell phone, and throughout the game, you unpack its content in a series of puzzle-driven unlocking sequences.

What sets SIMULACRA apart is its high production value. High quality FMVs, passable and explorable versions of popular social media apps, realistic text logs and emails -- these all make the small, contained world of SIMULACRA believable and immersive.

This is a great game. Recommended.

I've played a bunch of narrative-driven games over the past few years (Oxenfree, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Fran Bow, to name a few) and while several of these games resonated deeply with me, I think What Remains of Edith Finch just might be my favorite one of them all.

It's an undeniably gorgeous game, telling the stories of the Finch family in beautifully-crafted, poetic vignettes that incorporate surprising game mechanics in sometimes-surreal, sometimes-too real backdrops.

It's a short game -- just about two hours to complete all of the stories -- but it feels like the perfect length.

Everyone should play What Remains of Edith Finch, even if you're not interested in "walking simulators" -- just as long as you're remotely interested in playing a game with emotional investment attached.

Hook is a casual puzzle game where each level has the singular goal of retracting every line -- lines that might be blocked by another line or lines, or may be at the end of twisty turny-things. The mechanics are simple and easy to grasp, even as you progress and more complex levels emerge. Hook is also a pretty game, despite its simplicity; in later levels, puzzles are a chaos of lines and turny-things, becoming sleek and organized as you figure out how to pull in the lines. A good, short casual puzzle game for the price.

I started Oxenfree up late last night. It's now 3am.

I play a lot of games, and it's rare that a game can draw me in so completely that I play through it in one sitting.

The story is great: a combination of spooky fantasy and paranormal mystery, with characters that -- despite being rendered in relatively low-resolution, almost rotoscoped graphics -- seem alive, with their own insecurities and motivations. Most of Oxenfree plays out like an interactive movie with minimal gameplay that just works, on the strength of well-designed, crystal-clear mechanics that integrate smoothly with the story.

Dialogue in Oxenfree is realistic: rather than offering response choices A to D while your character stands there like a store mannequin, like many story-driven games do, Oxenfree works dialogue choices into the gameplay. If you're busy exploring, you might miss your chance to reply to someone. If you're sick of a character, you can choose to ignore them. If you're impatient, you can interrupt others in mid-sentence. I wish all games used a dialogue system like Oxenfree's; I've never felt more immersed in a story than I have playing this game.

It's a short game; 4 to 6 hours should be enough for a very thorough playthrough. A fantastic experience. I'm eager to see what Night School Studios creates in the future.

Big Pharma is a combination of tycoon sim, Tetris, and puzzle game.

The tycoon sim part is basic; you try to make sure your profits are higher than your expenses, you take out a loan if you're low on cash, you supply more of the drugs that are high in demand, and so on. The simple business management aspect suits the game well.

The Tetris part comes from the unique shape of the machines you place in your factory lines and the limited space in which you have to use. In the early game your available space is small, in the late game your factory lines are complex and long, and in both cases maximizing the use of space for optimal output is important.

The puzzle part is the meatiest: drug ingredients have components (with negative or positive effects) which can be removed, upgraded, or swapped around using one of your machines. These all have active ranges that vary, and it takes a bit of mental arithmetic to find the sweet spots to create the drug of your choice.

When creating drugs, all three parts of the game come into play, making Big Pharma a game with depth and replayability. The campaign missions start you off in an empty factory, which makes gameplay fairly repetitive (though getting randomly generated ingredients and starting ingredients mitigates this somewhat). If you don't mind starting from the beginning for every campaign mission and you're a fan of business sims and casual puzzle games, this could be a good fit.

Though the gameplay is based on one deceptively simple mechanic (the jump button, which becomes the button to shoot your gunboots while in mid-air), Downwell offers multiple layers of complexity through frenetic action in randomly-generated stages. Randomized upgrades at the end of each stage and in mid-stage shops and side rooms will be familiar to Binding of Isaac veterans; this adds some strategy to your character build and becomes necessary as later stages increase in difficulty.

This is a fantastic game well worth the asking price. On sale this is a no-brainer of a purchase.

I fired this game up on a whim because I don't have full use of my left hand at the moment and can't play keyboard-heavy games, and I found out that this is a fun game that scratched a logistics simulation itch I didn't know I had. However, there is little challenge besides the contracts (especially the mandatory one at the end of the campaign). I also suffered intense slowdown browsing through contracts while there were multiple ships in port and the docking and launching minigame was tedious (though thankfully skippable if you pay for a tugboat).

I'd cautiously recommend it for anybody who enjoys casual games involving economics and planning.

I love games like these. It's different, imaginative, clever, weird, funny, and brain-wracking, all in a low-key presentation. There's excitement whenever you figure out something new with the box and more excitement (and sometimes, disappointment) as you try to figure out what to do with the new thing you just discovered. A big recommendation.
