Basic Premise
Equilinox is a nature management game. You're given a randomly generated world of limited size and tasked with populating it, first with grass, then with flowers and trees, then sheep, and then a massive variety of plants and animals. The main challenge of the game comes in perfectly balancing each biome in order to best accommodate a variety of plants and animals. That's not particularly difficult or anything, but due to the large variety of plants and animals in the game, it can take a decent amount of time to actually complete it.

I would make the imperfect comparison to a city builder. I think it strikes the same chords with me. There's plenty of thought involved in designing my biomes and the most satisfying part of a city builder - going from a flat empty plain to a thriving metropolis - is present here as well. The imperfection of that comparison comes in that you don't individually place each plant and animal, you purchase them with DP generated passively with animals, or through the completion of tasks, the game's tutorial system essentially. Once one plant or animal is placed, it will naturally propagate, seemingly within a limited range.

Complexity is added through the evolution and mutation systems, as well as the multitude of biomes with individual needs to manage. The evolution and mutation systems are methods of modifying individual plants and animals in order to change their color, size, or other characteristics, or turn them into other being altogether with evolution given that you meet particular requirements. That's the main form of progression in the game.

Praise
  • The task system is an incredibly intuitive way to learn the game's systems and might be a great case study for tutorials in games.

It just works. -- Todd Howard
  • The mutation and evolution systems work well to provide a decent amount of complexity in individual beings, as well as in unlocking new creatures.
  • The DP system works fairly well in controlling the player's placement of creatures and plants, especially as more difficult to unlock beings take much more DP to purchase. It never really limited me unless I made a stupid expenditure, in which case I generally didn't have to wait very long to continue progressing.
  • Game looks very pretty and runs reasonably well with a few minor hiccups solved by restarting the game.

    Nitpicks
  • Sometimes animals can be difficult to select. This primarily applies to birds as they move fairly quickly in the air and aren't selectible when resting in a tree.
  • It can be frustrating to attempt to find the offending element in a biome that is causing issues with a particular being.
  • When mutating something for a requirement for evolution, it can be hard to find its offspring to actually evolve, especially when it's a subtle color or size change.

    Conclusion
    BUY THIS GAME!

For $10 US, this game is absolutely worth it if you're at all interested in a casual management game.
