This is now my go to city builder game. It's relaxing, mostly simple but complex solutions can solve problems in very creative ways. Managing water is so much fun in this game and the user interface is accessible. I rarely run into an issue where I don't know what is going wrong or where.

Building vertically is awesome and construction/demolition often requires building scaffolding in creative ways to get things done more efficiently. Some may see the scaffolding as a problem, but I see it as another interesting puzzle/challenge.

I would like more graphs and data on things, but other than that this game is excellent. I think Districts themselves could be a little easier to deal with, right now it is best to overextend your district and get it running for then split it off into another district.

Banished was my favorite city builder for a long time, but Timerborn is perfect for scratching that itch. I always come back to Timberborn when I have the itch for building and creativity and it never disappoints.

In between Battlefield 4 and Arma 3 this is the best tactical military simulator that is easy enough for the average player to get in to. Weapons feel great, explosions feel amazing and the sound is the best of any game I've played. Play with a real headset with dolby surround and you will really feel the shots and explosions. So much so that it's actually difficult to hear your squad mates talking which is exactly how it should be. It's the most immersive multiplayer FPS game out there right now. The squad comms makes things simple and straight forward and limits on weapons like sniper rifles make the game not just a big snipe fest which every other game is plagued with. Worth the buy just not to get shot by a sniper every time you are out in the field.

The game is fun, combat is interesting and challenging. Trading is interesting and effects the world around you. All in all it's a good game with some quality of life issues that need sorting out. Luckily the developer seems to be active and working on things. Rogue-Like mode is why I got the game. It's certainly challenging and you have to play the game differently than you might otherwise have to. Staying out of the middle of the fighting and picking off the weak ships or ships that are about to go down is a must at the beginning. Getting reputation with the different factions is a must. It not only allows you to buy better ships, but it also makes landing on there planets cheaper. I failed to understand that my first few hours. Getting faction reputation makes fighting and being a merchant much easier.

The Cons:

Using missiles doesn't seem to be worth the amount you get back from the bounty, making them cost ineffective. When firing my missile I find myself wondering why I'm even firing it, because I'm pretty much not going to make any money.

NPC's fly off the screen a lot, which you are unable to do. This means NPCs will get the bounty because bounties are based on last hit, screwing you out of money. I yelled at the screen so many times over this problem.

All in all I could see myself playing the game more, if some of these problems were fixed. I could have played the game on easy, but that would have been too boring.

Also every single mission I ran across in game ended up just getting me killed. The one time I did complete a mission fighting pirates I got no visible extra reward. I recommend staying away from missions entirely until you get a squad.

The log which appears at the bottom left of the screen is timed and there is no possible way to access anything that happened after a battle to see exactly what kills you got or exactly what happened with a mission.

This is the only game with cut scenes that rival high quality television. At moments I forgot I was playing a game and thought I was watching Game of Thrones. Combat is very good for an open world RPG, way better than Skyrim's. The item system along with socketables reminds me of Diablo. Finding and crafting new gear is fun and worthwhile. The decisions you make affect the world around you. Exploring is fun and interesting. Very few bugs, although there were a couple. Geralt's movement can be clunky in close quarter environments, but shines out in the open world. All in all this is by far my favorite game of the year.

It has the feel on Banished, but in space. Of course like most games of this genre, once you get the basics down, the challenges become limited. However this game does have difficulty levels and some of the achievements are certainly difficult. In that respect it is better than banished. There are only 8 research techs to buy in the game, I wish there was a few more. I wish there was a few more buildings as well. But as a whole it's a great base building game, I love the graphical style and gameplay. I'm hoping to finish all the achievements. It's certainly way better than Space Base DF-9.

Managing your spare parts and food are key and getting expensive robots up and going is a real challenge. The robots can supplement your workforce a great deal but take time and considerable resources to acquire enough to really make your base run flawlessly. Overall I love the little challenges that you can make for yourself. Getting a base going after you learned the basics is easy enough and once you get going it's hard to screw up, just like Banished. The most fun part of the game is actually optimizing everything once you get going. You learn slightly new things from every base you build and your next base is almost always better. All in all I'd give it an 8/10. If they ever add more researches and buildings, I'll easily give in a 9 or 10.

After reading the other reviews, I haven't experienced nearly the amount of trouble other people have had. It may be due to a pathfinding update they did recently before I had even played. If you were frustrated with the game before, you should probably try again. Overall the pathfinding seems pretty good to me.

I understood this game wouldn't have the real kind of depth I was looking for, but felt it would be good enough as a simple time killer. I like the 2D plane naval style battles. What I don't like is not owning multiple ships with different setups. Mining is really more complicated than it should be for this type of game. If my mining laser is on the bottom of the ship, good luck hitting an asteroid above your ship. Scanning for asteroids gives no information of what you are mining for and as far as I can tell there is no item that does. Certain weapons seemingly fire through your ship even though vision is blocked. Really it's not a terrible game, but it's not a particularly good one. Galaxy On Fire has more depth than this game. The combat is good and interesting, the story is good and even the voice acting is good. Graphics are fine. Some small details were missed and the game was dumbed down more than it needed to be. If you are looking for something really simple, then this game is for you. It's on Galaxy On Fire's level. If you are the type who likes the X Series or was into Eve Online and you were looking for something kind of in between in the single player realm, you will be slightly disappointed.

This review is for people who are familiar with Eve Online and I will use it draw comparisons. I will first list the features that both games have, which is the primary reason why I like these games.

  • Player controlled cities/holdings
  • Player controlled buildings
  • Player built ships
  • Full crafting system where just about everything in game is built by players.
  • Full market system with buy/sell orders.
  • PVP is mandatory, if you go out to kill some mobs you always have to be watching your back.
  • You will lose your loot if killed by a player to that player.

Personally I played Eve Online for about a year and half, and I only had one single problem with. The downtime is excruciating most of the time. 10% of Eve Online is great fun, because very interesting things can happen in a player controlled world like that, however the other 90% can be extremely boring. Darkfall addresses this problem quite well.

Darkfall has many systems that encourage players to leave relative safety of clan holdings. This encourages players to leave there cities to accomplish many tasks. There are city levies, which take time to be emptied and you must protect yourself or take the risk of gaining massive loot. Treasure maps can be found which will give you some basic direction of where to find actual good loot drops to dig out of the ground. Just recently while treasure hunting I was forced to walk through enemy territory to find the loot. These are just a couple of ways that PVP is encouraged and exploration as well. The map is big enough to provide relative enough safety and you can always hide behind a rock and hope they don't see you.

The sieges and boat system adds to the complexity of the game. Of course this game is for hardcore players, most people are not going to like it. Before finding Darkfall I was playing Rust and trying to get into DayZ. I was interested in the idea of fearing for my life every time I go out. Darkfall does this in ways I wasn't expecting.

The progression system makes the game

Warnings
  • Don't leave relative safety with any items you are not willing to lose. Bank your loot often.
  • You must find a group and have a mic, use teamspeak and find a decent clan, most will accept noobs. Plenty of terrible clans out there, but plenty of good ones too. Finding a good clan makes or breaks this game, it's an MMO not a single player adventure. Join one as soon as possible, they can help you learn much more quickly. If you join Darkfall planning to play solo, while possible, it is not going to be fun in the end. I play solo half the time until I'm needed for a fight or raiding party, however I'm generally always in teamspeak while playing unless I'm simply harvesting resources or crafting.
  • There is a lot of grinding, if that's not for you then don't subscribe.
  • You cannot repair armor or weapons, once it is destroyed by durability it is gone forever. However this keeps the market stable and makes it so resources are always in demand, Darkfall has one the most lucrative and stable markets of any MMO including Eve Online because of this.
  • Crafting can be very tedious, but partly what I like about this game is harvesting resources and crafting is very easy to do while watching Netflix or otherwise doing other things online.
  • This is not some tab based skill cooldown game like WOW, it is live action and fast paced meaning FPS skill is more important than your actual build in some ways.
  • The interface is very old school and takes a lot of getting used to, however I grew to actually like it.
  • Graphics are not amazing nor are they terrible.

Tips
  • Make plenty of bags and organize your loot in your bank. It's the games way of managing the massive amount of items you will find.
  • Save all your loot you get. It's almost all useful in someway or can be sold on the market. Salvage items you don't need.
  • Set out to finish your feats, it's the easiest way to gain prowess.
  • Gather resources on your downtime while watching Netflix or surfing the net. Every little thing you do in this game gives you prowess which can be spent on any skill or stat.

This game just wasn't ready to be published. After 21 patches and a month and a half after release, the game is still riddled with bugs. I'm going to wait about 5 more months to try again as the developers are going to need that time to fix the uncountable issues with the game. I still can't make it through the campaign without the game asking me to transport someone to some non-existent space station. The only way people seem to make it through is by modifying the massive save files. This game is worse than a lot of greenlight games are. As a programmer I understand building a dynamic universe like this is extremely complex. There are a lot of complaints about unfinished games being released to early from Battlefield 4 to Diablo 3. Those games had some understandable problems on release. This game however, is not even close to playable and can't even be compared to the problems other games have had on release. I don't blame the developers, I blame the publishers for releasing a game that quite simply is not ready to be played. I really wanted to like this game and tried really hard to looks past the glaring problems. I really hope they succeed in fixing the issues and get the game to a playable state.
