Not sure what to say other than, well, "wow." When the Darkness Comes is a surreal horror experience which delves into the human psyche. As the developer warns, if you are prone to depression or anxiety, or feel like a deep psychological experience could be harmful to you, do not play this game. Currently at 1:00AM I am still trying to wrap my head around the experience I just had, because I'm not sure what to take of it. I think that's what the developer wanted, was something to make you question. Maybe that's questioning your purpose, maybe that's questioning why you hide from your fears. Whatever it is, this game delivers on that.
Coming from someone who has struggled with depression, anxiety, and an overwhelming sense of dread his whole life, this experience was very intense. I feared every turn, I was lost and couldn't find my way many times. I always caught myself looking behind me, both in game and in real life. But, in the end, I don't feel any more fear about this game, and I think I might try to find all the paths this game has hidden (yes, there are multiple paths).
All in all, this was an amazing experience. I can't wait to find more, and I really want to thank the developer for this piece of art!
