Take this as a first impressions.
The is the first decent 3D Sonic title in some time, although that's not saying much. I'm 9 hours in and I've spent more time in one sitting than I have in most games this year. With that being said, there is still a long ways to go before I can call something like this great.
Narrative-wise, focusing on a minimalist plot and maximising the time spent on character development feels like a breath of fresh air for this series and works surprisingly well. I don't think I've ever liked Amy in previous entries but here she was actually relatable. These characters have matured and putting the attention on that was a great idea. It's unfortunate that the gameplay isn't nearly as focused.
I don't think anyone can objectively say that a Sonic game must do anything in particular. A slower paced and more relaxed title is absolutely fine as there's no reason for it not to exist. With that being said, I kinda feel like the attention has been divided into so many little styles of gameplay here that not a single one feels truly fleshed out. Unfolding and exploring the open-world sections is addictive, and getting Sonic's speed up is a massive plus, but it doesn't stop the environments from looking vacant. The traditional Sonic tracks aren't as automated as others in the Boost series but the newer controls made me rely on grind rails and boost rings so I could stay on the track without accidentally zipping off a tight corner. They are probably the least memorable 3D tracks yet as well, with most just being a pallet swap. The boss encounters are engaging upon first encountering them but the repeats never grabbed my attention the same way again.
I think this game looks nice at times but the cutscenes genuinely feel like something out of GMod, rigid and flat.

I do recommend this title based off of what I've played for the same reason I say this is the best 3D Sonic title in a long time. I rarely had my brain switched off. I was active in most of the gameplay scenarios presented and the addictive nature of the sandbox portions multiples the playtime I would've had with this otherwise.
What I'm trying to say is, yes this is worth your time but just because the flavour of Sonic has been crap for so long doesn't make an above average title the second coming of Christ. It's fine enough but that's not to say that it'll stand the test of time nor is saying that it's memorable for being different necessarily a compliment. It's like watching Sega build a tower of cards and they've finally managed to get a basic square standing up. Good for you but I'm not applauding it just yet.
