(Note: I played a lot of the original Alpha, years ago, and really enjoyed it. I didn't play the recent pre-release Alpha update, but played over 30 hours of the Steam beta.)

I have been having a ton of fun with this game, switching back and forth between a Warrior character and a Ranger character (archer). I really love the exploration aspects of the game, and I think that is the critical part of whether someone will enjoy this game or not... If you have read anything about this game around launch, you will know that the progression system is very controversial - The only permanent progression of your character is tiny conveniences from collecting artifacts, such as slightly faster gliding speed. Most of your gear becomes useless when you travel between the different regions on your map.

For me, the fun has been exploring every nook and cranny of each region, making sure I find every single artifact, and hopefully find one or two of the '+gear' items, so that when I move onto the next region, I have a little bit of a power boost. In my experience, I have always had enough +gear going into a new region that I feel strong enough jump into some fights with mid-level enemies, and I do enjoy the process of gearing up in each new region - but as I said at the start, the best part of the game is the giant procedurally generated world, and all of the collectibles.

If you don't like the idea of a game where you collect items just for the sake of getting them all, then it might not hold your attention very long (the bonuses really are miniscule). And if you are really tied to the idea of constantly driving to make your character stronger and stronger, this will probably be frustrating... But while the gear system in Cube World is definitely unusual, it doesn't really change the minute-to-minute gameplay of most RPGs - there are always enemies around you that are weaker than you, and ones that are stronger - and none of that gets in the way of what I see as the real goal of the game... Exploration!

I think the value proposition for this 'game' is pretty simple... If you like the idea of just teleporting around the room and breaking things with goofy little cat paws, you will probbaly have fun with this.

I tried playing it on my own, and was totally bored by it - but when I brought it out at a party, I think eveyrone watching on the TV was enjoying the show more than the person playing it.

The whole thing felt awkward to me - constantly getting my head stuck in world geometry, or having trouble getting into the right position.

It's not something that I enjoyed at all, but I could see how the novelty would be appealing to some people.

This is a very simple little game, that most people probably aren't going to put hours into, but it is a fantastic little abstract experience for introducing people to VR. Once you get a handle on the controls, which seems to happen pretty quick, flinging the little balls around the room is a joy, and feels totally natural.

For the price, I absolutely recommend it to anyone just starting with VR.

I'm a bit torn here. There seems to be a lot of potential here, but it was wasted on me, because of a few glaring issues that I ran into early on.

First, I feel like there was an incredible disconnect between the framing of the Tutorials and the actual gameplay. The tutorials happen in an incredibly safe environment, and give you a very basic understanding of how to fight, and dont really give you any understanding of how the enemies are going to approach you. For example, one robot will stand stationary in a room, and you take a few shots at it. Then, the very first level totally throws you in at the deep end. Robots start spawning all around me, faster that I can take them out, and moving towards me like a hoard of zombies - I was not expecting this game to give me the same kind of anxiety as The Brookhaven Experiment, and I quickly felt overwhelmed. I was not prepared, and it was a really negative experience.

Next, there were a few mechanics that were just plain uncomfortable, and I felt were really bad implementations in VR.

I spent a bit of time in the tutorial area, where all movement was teleportation based, and felt good. Then when selecting a level, the 'loading' transition was an elevator that moved down suddenly - with no warning, it almost made me fall down.

FInally, it may seem like a small quirk, but probably my biggest problem with the game was an action that one enemy did... There's a type of 'ninja' robot that cloaks, and dashes around to avoid your fire. Several times it dashed up fairly close to me, attacked, then ran away - but at one point it walked up close to me, attacked, and as I was returning fire it dashed THROUGH me, to the other side - Maybe this wont bother everyone, and may seem inconsiquential - but with the level of immersion in VR games, this just mentally hit me like a ton of bricks, and my brain didn't know how to deal with this stimulus - This one tiny action made me feel confused, disoriented, frustrated, and angry.

I think there is a good game here somewhere, but buried under a poorly thought out VR experience. I can't recommend it to anyone who experiences any level of discomfort in VR - I was able to handle more time in Windlands and Brookhaven than Raw Data.

I'm pretty torn on this. When everything aligns just right in the game, and you have a really good run, it is incredibly fun and exhilarating. However I think that the game is missing just a little bit of polish on the jumping/movement mechanics before I would recommend it. There were just far too many times where I felt like I did everything right and had a spectacular run going, and somehow it just completely fails to do what I expected it to - making me smack the back/side of a track and fall down rather than doing a mantle/jump or wall-run - the character just slides off the truck awkwardly - or I feel like I just barely made a jump, but I die instead.

It's unfortunate, because there does seem to be a ton of potential here - my quick play session was a roller coaster of emotions, peaking back and forth between utter joy and complete frustration. In the end, it was just too frustrating, not because of some well designed difficulty, but a complete disconnect in the movement system between what I was attempting and how the physics of the game reacted.

If you saw the trailer, and wondered if this was some sort of clever, satirical, surealist game... or if it is as bad as it looked... I can tell you there is nothing clever about it.

As far as I can tell there are only two mini-games at the start, and a 'training' zone. One game where you throw balls at boxes.... That's it. And second game where balls of four colors fall from a portal a few feet above you, and you use your hands to push them slightly as they fall down, towards the four corners of the arena of the same color.

The throwing game is fun for about 10 seconds - then I realized that there is absolutely no depth beyond that. The second game is too chaotic to even tell what is going on, and I didn't find it to be fun at all. From the trailer, it looks like there are additional games which I assume are unlocked, but I didn't see any indication of how to do so, and based on the quality of the first two games, I'm not interested in seeing what else is in store.

This feels like test project that a developer would make in a week, to start exploring how to make actual VR games. There is no way I could recommend purchasing this - even if it was $1. The current price of $15 is insane to me.
