Can't give this game a positive review until games start after people load into it and they add a role queue. Just not a stable enough experience to foster any sort of competitive gameplay at the moment, and they added ranked before fixing these glaring issues. Judging by how they're setting up their skins too, seems just as predatory as always. But if they at least make the game work on a baseline I'll change my review.

Never expected this would be a game I would end up spending so much time in when I bought it to occasionally play with my friends as a party game. Barotrauma is a very open ended game about navigating through the waters beneath the ice of Jupiter's moon with your crew in progressively more advanced submarines, in a short term quest for resources and power and a long term quest of reaching the depths of Europa's underwater caverns. Along the way you will encounter a plethora of dangers and opportunities, and likely fail many times throughout. Facing the horrors that await you blind is a terrifying yet exhilarating experience, and you'll not only have to navigate alien dangers, but also a fragile political situation with two major and two minor factions at odds with each other.

In the multiplayer experience this game is a ton of fun. With friends you'll be struggling together to figure everything out, in public servers you'll likely struggle to stay alive throughout countless shenanigans. But the singleplayer in my opinion is also very fun and enjoyable for many other reasons. If you're hooked to this game, you'll be able to progress deeply on your own save, and the AI crew are serviceable to automate everything except piloting the ship and leading expeditions outside the sub. But with others you'll have an easier time accomplishing dangerous tasks outside the sub.

When playing with people, you'll be choosing a class for yourself that determines your starting skills and the types of perks you can get. When playing singleplayer you'll be able to freely switch between anyone in the sub crew.

Captains specialize in manning their ships, providing team wide bonuses to experience and other general buffs, providing bonuses to increase wealth and reputation, being good with a revolver, smoking pipe tobacco and playing the harmonica.

Mechanics specialize in repairing hulls, engines, & water pumps, acquiring resources from wrecks and ores and processing them, hitting things in melee, and building things like defensive drones and a powerful but high-maintenance exosuit.

Engineers focus on fixing and maintaining the electrical systems on a ship, maintaining the reactor and power supply, crafting high-quality weaponry, ripping open doors with crowbars at the speed of light and doing good damage with them, and fixing beacon stations that serve as underwater lighthouses for Europan travelers.

Doctors serve as the saviors of any mission gone awry and can keep diving teams alive in and after dangerous encounters. They can specialize in defending themselves or becoming powerful agents of death with chemical warfare and harvest the genetic material of the local fauna to give a wide array of powerful bonuses to themselves and the team.

Security Officers serve as the submarine's defense from threats both inside and out, being the best equipped to man a submarine's guns and destroy any threats that enter the sub itself. In some situations, especially multiplayer, that threat can be from within too.

Assistants provide a variety of teamwide buffs, especially to experience growth, and help other assistants level up faster. They are built to be the vanguard, the first expended, with their deaths almost never counting towards bonuses that rely on no crewmembers dying in a mission. With enough experience their deaths can even be a big payout to the crew. Assistants can also specialize in buffing another class, gaining many of their perks and skill, and specialize in quite literally clowning around.

The modding scene is also really damn good for this game. We're talking a plethora of overhauls, with good control over building mod presets and easily being able to download mods for servers in-game. Barotrauma has an in-game submarine editor that has resulted in a huge plethora of modded submarine choices, many of which are quite ambitious on their own and change the gameplay loop a fair amount. If you ever find your choices lacking for your favorite class of sub, you'll find a lot more options on the workshop at every tier.

I haven't even gotten into the fact that there's other gamemodes - but I haven't touched them really so I'm not an expert. You can make lobbies to do individual missions at any stage of the game you like, or even submarine pvp (with a few different gamemodes of its own). There's even an optional traitor mechanic that takes everything about Barotrauma but also adds an among us-esque layer where one player is lead to do specific acts of sabotage for their own personal victory. There's a lot to this game. As other people say, it's ambitious. But damn have they done a pretty good job of executing on their ambitions. And the thriving modding scene makes the game so much infinitely bigger.

So yeah. I'd definitely recommend. I think this game deserves overwhelmingly positive reviews at this point.

When will Supergiant Games finally miss? Bastion, Transistor and Pyre all were incredible stories that brought me to tears. Not so much with Hades but by god did I spend more time in that game than all the rest combined and loved it to death. And now they come out with their first sequel and it's just everything you want in a sequel. The core gameplay is there, with expanded gameplay mechanics exactly where you want them, and fun additional mechanics such as alchemy and crafting, with a compelling twist to the story that honestly was such a massive motivator to dive into it if you invested your time in the first game. But even without having played the first game you'd still get a lot from this one. The sequel, in my opinion, also does a better job at flexing some of their biggest vocal talents: Darren Korb, Ashley Barrett, and Logan Cunningham. Hearing Logan (the voice actor for many characters in Hades I & II) talk down on you in the same kind of holier-than-thou enunciation as the narrator in Pyre is SUCH a treat, and I was screaming when I just randomly started heard Barrett humming, getting flashbacks to their game Transistor. If you haven't played the other games these people have made first, I'd HIGHLY recommend their entire games library to anyone. Every single tale these creators weave had me hooked - there's a reason I name drop their talent like they're household names.

I will say that the Hades series turned off my partner completely due to the roguelite elements of the game. The challenge isn't worth it without being invested in the characters in that case. But if you listen closely to the dialogue, you'll find overcoming certain enemies very satisfying. There are challenges you can overcome in fights that the enemies WILL comment on - certain things that the game will take note of in your playstyle that characters will express. It makes the game feel so much more alive in my opinion and creates an immensely satisfying experience when you overcome these obstacles.

So this game is best for people who love character-driven stories but also enjoy overcoming difficult challenges that you have to try repeatedly in order to overcome. If you played the first game though, you won't have to struggle for too long I'm sure. But enjoying the gameplay loop in repetition is very important to your enjoyment in this game - even though, in my opinion, this sequel does a lot to bring a TON of extra variety into your runs. Either way, I'm still a diehard fan of Supergiant Games, can't wait to see how they flesh this one out and where they go next.

This game is surprisingly packed with depth under its rough visage. Honestly a ton of fun to play. Achievement hunting is a great way to point you towards some of the really silly builds that you can accomplish in this, and there's plenty of other wacky combinations that you can put together in chaos mode beyond even 100% completion. Breaking the game with an awesome setup to then just buy a million snakes and burn through them with the fury of a thousand suns? Moments like that create huge highs in the gameplay loop, and reaching that point is really what SNAKE FARM is all about to me. The only times I really felt frustration with this game was when I was going for the pacifist achievements, but even those weren't that bad. For the price tag it's an absolute no brainer in my opinion.

A really fun experience all in all. My biggest gripes with the game were solved as I progressed, and the story gripped me enough to make me want to push through and persevere. While I don't have souls-like experience, I've played Furi and Rain World which I think prepared me well for this. There are definitely some major difficulty spikes in this game through, which overcoming are immensely satisfying. Despite this it still took me probably around 43-45 hours to beat the game, considering some of my time was spent AFK. Definitely worth the money considering every hour spent was spent enjoying the gameplay, storyline, character development, music, art, and worldbuilding.

For TWO YEARS I have awaited this game, and it is so worth it that I cannot even begin to say. It's just so magnificent that not even the words that escape my mouth begin to explain the wonders of this beautiful creation. Buy it, unless you're dumb, in which don't buy it and go be stupid, you stupid.

Strategic game where you take WW2 by the horns and ride it down some other path. Spread communism all the way to France, or spread facism all the way to the USA. You can also save Poland from those darn Soviets, or perhaps fight back the Japanese and unify China. Don't expect mind-boggling explosive action, the entire game is a map with menus, but if you enjoy pure strategy and history, don't have a small attention spam, and are awesome, then the action will come by itself on the well-made menus of Hearts of Iron III. Probably the greatest historical game ever, and is also definitely silly as well, as you can do things such send your army of Lithuanians to invade Estonia and Latvia, or send your elite Luxembourish troops to invade the Netherlands. Great fun.
