As much as I wanted to (I have played DL1 for a long time) , I cannot recommend this game. It's just straight up a worse game than its predecessor. It fell into the trappings of modern map icon clearing designed games.

- Unnecessary Ubisoft-tier RPG mechanics. This trend of zones having arbitrary levels for no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reason needs to die. It's doubly annoying in this game because of the emphasis on traversal. Triply annoying because you can't tell that you're in a different zone because they all look the same.

- The gear is both useless and mandatory. The secondary stats are not enough to make any kind of build (except for one where if you stack a stat high enough you become invulnerable), but you need the attack power and the armor or else ennemies will pummel you to death in a corner in seconds while you fight with what amount to a pool noodle.

- Ungodly grind for upgrades. It forces unnatural playstyles, like farming low level zombies in early zones before finishing the game in order to have enough trophies to craft decent mods that can actually hurt high level ennemies. And you will need those upgrades because all the game scales to your level once you finish it without any way to opt out of it.

- Uninspired map design : the whole map is flat, not a single hill. Everything is copy pasted which makes it almost impossible to tell where you are on the map just by looking around. I used to be able to do that in the first game by looking at the Tower. The environnements were more varied and there was a big difference of gameplay whether you were near the fishing village, around the appartment complexes or the part of the map where you see Volatiles for the first time. Here the streets ,the buildings, the backyards, melt into each other to form a big blob of jungle gym assets rather than to form a city. There are no unique locations that you expect to see. No police station, no fire station, no swimming pool, no train station, no public library, no prison, no city hall... This could have led to unique activities.

- Even the activities are copy pasted. Every dark zone looks the same, every GRE hospital looks the same. They all play the same too. You always enter through the same hole in the storefront or the same GRE building on the roof. Not a single time will you enter through a window. There are no unique locations like the quarantine zones in the previous game. The only one I can remember is the underground parking at the beginning of the game, that's it.

- No dynamic day/night cycle. That includes the whole dark zone mechanic, you will never see a zombie leave or enter a dark zone. It's just spawns. You can stand still in a cleared dark zone for an entire ingame day without worries as long as you don't go to the next room over.
Also you can't tell the time by looking at the sun like in the previous game. No foreboding feeling when you see the zombies looking at the setting sun.

- The game wants to be both story heavy and coop at the same time. There is a lot of dialogue. Nobody wants to join someone just to get stuck for minutes in a cutscene without being able to do anything.

- The zombie physics is still lackluster. It's very hard to manipulate them to make them fall off a ledge for exemple. And the animation based attacks from the virals and the hag are annoying.

- It's one step away from being the average live service game : do you dailies, do your weeklies, work on your battlepa...I mean chapters, make sure to visit the website to claim your rewards and while you're at it, why don't you check out this paid bundle ? It contains some exclusive blueprints. No you can't earn it ingame. Or at least you had to be there when the event was happening 4 months ago !!
The latest event requires you to login and do those ♥♥♥♥♥♥ daily tasks like "kill 150 ennemies" over a duration of 7 days and if you miss a SINGLE DAY, you miss out on the rewards (among which is a unique damage increase charm and a weapon blueprint btw, not something purely cosmetic) . God forbid you chose to take a few days off to touch grass. This is the kind of event design we can expect moving forward because they just got bought by TENCENT and they will want their monthly active users.

The only thing I can't really complain about is the combat because human combat was terrible in the first game.
Parkour mechanics have also seen some improvements but the map is so boring and samey that I actually enjoy my time less, making it a downgrade from the first game.

They have been putting band aids to fix their game but they come at odds with the previous design philosophy (ex : special infected spawns at night that are now almost impossible to do without starting a chase with a Volatile)

Bad Rats : when you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes back

You don't even need to start it to feel that this game (should I say masterpiece ?) rises above its peers; the deceptively simple title "Bad Rats" and the already classic artstyle hide a treasure in impressive game design and rich storytelling that a keen eye will immediately perceive.

From the get go , on the main menu, you can bear witness to the genius of the developers : a mouth-breething idiot would tell you that the game starts in the "wrong" resolution but , as anyone with half a brain can tell, this is actually intended. By allowing you to try to adjust the resolution of the game to your screen, the game is telling you that you have to "adjust your way of thinking to the game", a stroke of genius that will surprises even those familiar with the works of other visionaries such as Hideo Kojima or Yoko Taro. This has already filtered the simplest minds, unable to grasp this concept but this goes further.
I spent 10 minutes trying to fit the game to my screen's resolution, and that's when it hit me : it's backwards, I have to fit my screen to the game ! I need to format myself in order to be worthy ! In order for the window to fit, I have to think differently. My mind was blown a second time and I needed to pick up the pieces.

I was presomptuous, I wasn't ready at all . I thought my diploma in Gender studies would have prepared me for anything that life could throw at me... I was deeply and utterly wrong.
I will need to find myself through deep introspection before even attempting to press the "Play" button again. I fear doing so before being ready would destroy my psyche again, beyond repair.

I recommend this game to anyone willing to have a life-changing experience. Be warned that your life's paradigm may very well be shattered for the low price of 99 cents.

Best (true) Coop game I have played, ever. You actually work as a team instead of playing next to each other.

This game is filled with "Why bother ?". Your hard earned gear will be lost when you cross an imaginary line. Why bother ? The time you will spend mining ore and crafting will be for naught once you cross that same border. Why bother ? Traversal items that you had to earn through quests are also lost. Why bother ? Artifact items (which replaces xp and levels), the end game, give minuscule upgrades to useless stats like swimming or gliding, stats which become useless when you change regions anyway. WHY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BOTHER ?

The only difference between you hour 1 and you hour 20 is that your character drags itself a tad faster across this boring empty map.

Cube world...Why bother ? /10
