After getting the game free in the 24 hour promo I think it at least deserves a review.

Total Honestly, I’ve loved my current 6 hours in the game. The open world perfectly encapsulates that what’s that feeling with every 360 of the camera finding 6 new things you want to go over to.

So far the puzzles have been good with ranging difficulties.

I feel for the amount of content it’s worth its full asking price but 50% or under is a steal for anyone with any interest in puzzle games.

Note - game does not work currently on steam deck so having to use GeForce now to play it.

(MMO features also seem useless since you can’t talk with players, team up with friends or as far as I can see do any multiplayer puzzles, so the upcoming offline mode will be welcome)

Disappointingly I cannot recommend this game.

I loved Dorfromantik (which this game will always be compared to) and felt I would love this too.

It seemed a similar game with some differences to change it up and an art style which I preferred the look of.

However the game is not worth its price. It is too simple to the point where I completed the entire game in my first run lasting 4 hours or so.

Along with this the achievements seem to be broken so nothing unlocked for that run nor does it give me a reason to play the game again.

If you have Dorf, play that, If you don’t buy that instead or wait for something else to come along.

If you just want a chill landscape planner go for townscape, it’s cheaper.

It's got a demo. Try it, fall in love, buy it and compete.

This game both needs and deserves more players. If neon white and doom had a baby.

Also runs at a great 40/40 on steamdeck.

Q - Would I recommend Backfirewall_?
A - Maybe

Unfortunately for me, the more of the game I played, the less I enjoyed my time with it.

As such I recommend this as a “maybe” as I feel it will be very hit or miss, but because it will be “really” worth playing for the right person, I will not give the game a thumbs down.

The games strengths are in its visuals, it’s story, it’s voice acting, the package and experience as a whole are lovely and the nerdy nature of traversing the inside of a phone seeing Ints, chars, along with all the techy references will without a doubt put a smile and some people’s faces.

There are two stories in this game, the story you play through as an update package for the phones operating system which is presented in a fairly witty and humours way with dialogue from your companion the current OS and meeting apps on the phone such as social media F, I and T to health app and photos app. And then the story presented to you from the collectible chat messages through the games stages by the user of the phone you occupy.

The first for me was entertaining to start, but the more I played the less I unfortunately cared about it. It does, or can have a deeper meaning if you wish to experience the story that way about change and the meaning of change or staying still and how that can affect your life. But to me the layers of a story shouldn’t be what make the story good (but can elevate the story to be better), it should be entertaining in itself.

I personally found the secondary story told through collected messages to be more entertaining as it was revealed, but these messages can be missed and even though I felt I was leaving no box unturned in my play through, I did miss a number of these and missed out on the end of this story having not collected the last messages.

As you can see most of my review is on the story, that’s because this is what I feel this game will be about and be the appeal for those who will enjoy it.

The gameplay itself is simple and the puzzles are not to challenging, they are simply a means to an end to get you to progress through this 7-8 hour experience.

And that gameplay starts to feel repetitive mostly as you get further, though does thankfully near the end throw a few more interesting ideas at you for the final stretch.

So in summary, if you liked games like portal, fire watch and similar titles in walking sim and “puzzle” adventure genres you could like backfirewall_ though your experience won’t be as good as those titles.

Get on sale if that sounds like it appeals to you.

I played this game via a steam deck to completion of the main story, but not replaying for completion of its secondary story.

The game had performance issues after the first zones which did impact enjoyment somewhat but not to the extent the game could not be finished. (I don’t feel this was a steam deck issue and more a game optimisation issue but cannot be sure.)

Q - Would I recommend Hero of the Kingdom?
A - Yes

Is Hero of the Kingdom for everybody? No, but I feel there is moments in time for every gamer where Hero is the next game they should look to play.

This game is not challenging, it has no real characters, it has a story so far to serve the purpose to make you move from one point in the game to another and it has extremely simple gameplay.

Hero of the Kingdom can be boiled down to a series of fetch quests, but saying just that would be a little unfair.

While correct in that statement, the game however has been very smartly designed in how you progress. You’ll always feel like you found something you needed. You’ll always unlock a new “skill” just at the right time, a new area at the right moment.

The game is an expert in progression and giving you a very tight feedback loop that you feel good about moving from step to step.

Overall it’s relaxing, but if you want a little bit of a challenge (and I mean little) work towards 100% completion of the game and getting all achievements. You’ll have to think about your actions just that little bit more.

Hero of the kingdom is the ultimate palette cleanser for any gamer as they move from one demanding experience to another. Perfect when you want to interact with something to unwind and give you a constant small endorphin boost as you make quick and easy progress.

Don’t come into this looking for more than it is and you won’t come away disappointed.

On sale often and for cheap it’s worth the price of entry and I can see myself playing the series to completion when those moments in time arise that the Hero series is the perfect game to turn to.

Q - Would I recommend Deponia?
A - No.

While I don’t recommend Deponia, I do still plan to play it’s sequel eventually.

Let’s start with what this game has done well. The art style is genuinely beautiful and the animations have a lot of work and detail put into them, and the game can be worth your time just to experience this alone.

However, that time will be frustrating. The gameplay is what you would expect from the genre but the logic behind the puzzles is so obtuse that it can go from frustrating to infuriating in the logic required to progress.

Unfortunately, I had to rely on a guide more times than I would have liked during my play-through.

Because of this, I felt it hurt the story, which is adequate but not amazing. If the logic for the gameplay was a bit more grounded, the story would have moved faster and benefited from it.

In summary the design of the game from the art, animations, voice acting and audio are worth experiencing. But the gameplay is not. You maybe get more enjoyment out of watching a let’s play or using a guide to just experience the story.
