ok so first, if you like shandalar, you're just going to want this, so let's get that out of the way

Mage Tower 2 is a charming little bite sized roguelike experience, with an engaging enough complete-objectives-based progression system, some very silly self-aware artwork, and some legitimately cool spells. where it really shines is the core gameplay though, just the fundamental decisions about how to play your hand each turn often feel a little more engaging than most roguelike deckbuilders for me.

sidenote, i find a lot of games by small teams without AAA quality UI designers like this are built for very hardcore audiences and are really difficult to get into, and you'd be forgiven for assuming that about mage tower, but it's actually really accessible imo. i think anyone comfortable with playing slay the spire or any card game on a casual level will be just fine here.

games that sell themselves on this type of "wholesome" vibe can be a little hit or miss for me, but this one does just genuinely feel like a relaxing, pleasant, cozy time. gameplay is simple, but engaging enough. i had fun mashing the dab button with a stranger.

only major concern is that it might be harder in the future to connect with a lobby of players, but like, the game's free. it'll always be here for streamers or for your own little friend group to connect up even if it gets hard to find lobbies with strangers later.

i think most of the negative reviews on this game so far are the result of conveyance issues, so i want to just use this review to try to clear up the two biggest things people aren't understanding:

-you can use regular and super boost at the same time. in fact, you absolutely need to be doing this. the boost tutorial doesn't mention it at all and a lot of people are finding themselves much slower than the game expects them to be because they don't know they can do it. hopefully the tutorial gets updated to mention this

-you're not supposed to win races in career mode on the first try. i don't know why they structured it like this without really explaining it, but you're supposed to run through and get 3rd places in events so you can unlock enough upgrades to actually try to win them on the second run through, i guess so you get more mileage out of each event? honestly i don't even mind that system but it's kind of baffling to just expect the player to know they're not meant to win.

anyway, once you understand those two things, the game's pretty comparable to redout 1 so far, which is my favorite racing game of all time. there are things i think are steps in the wrong direction, like increased emphasis on correct boosting, but the increased ship customizability and the new areas are pretty cool and i'm liking the new tracks so far. don't let the mixed review score scare you, i'm not going to say the negative reviewers are "mad because bad" but i think a lot of them aren't understanding some of redout 2's... kind of alien, unexplained decisions, is all.

Glyph is old school platforming in the best possible way. i haven't really seen a lot of games since the gamecube era that actually take this much advantage of analogue controls; a change of a few degrees in angle can make all the difference in the way you bounce off an obstacle. i know the thing everyone says is "easy to play, hard to master" but with only three buttons, yet all the detail in analogue angling and momentum, this actually does nail that. variety of mission types and obstacle types keeps you from burning out on longer sessions and you get a new cosmetic to play with every time you complete a level! super cute and good.

obviously the art's very fun, the music's very fun, the controls and movement are fun, the awful jokes are fun, the silly saturday morning cartoon plot is fun, the good voice acting is fun, and the terrible voice acting is also fun. if this game looks like it's for you it almost definitely is! note that a single playthrough is definitely on the shorter side but games like this are meant to be played a bunch of times anyway.

really enjoyable little collection of games, but be warned that these are tonepiece style walking simulators rather than traditional narrative style. if you're into just wandering around atmospheric spaces though, there are definitely some interesting visuals and emotions happening here.

i've been really enjoying my time with chroma so far! personally i wouldn't recommend it as a competitive game (although i wouldn't recommend any card game as a comp game really) but casually there's a lot of fun and flavor to experiment with. in a game where that's the appeal, it's important that all the cards are easily obtainable, and they're just all unlocked for free here! the lore tab's pretty cute and fun too, and this is easily my favorite monetization model i've seen in card games. the discord community has been shockingly wholesome and readable so far too. come play chroma!
