Punishing and rewarding, you get more out of the game by trying to complete runs with all the different ships instead of just the primary one. My only complaint is that once your ship is specd out by the end of Secter 3/4 there is little inscentive to explore Secters 5 and 6 and you find youself only searching for fuel or going straight for warp blockers and then bouncing.

End game is repetitive. Enjoyable until then, major grind afterwards. If you do not care about getting all the legendary gear you'll be fine, if you do prepare to spend a litteral eternity hoping against hope that the specific legendary you need pops up in a loot chest or as an opponent in a duel.
