Sekiro is a game in which you can use your Samurai Sword (also known as a Katana) to slice the dirty gaijins who are invading Nippon Sengoku Basara. I would give this game a solid 10 souls out of 15 brexits.

So I am a fan of Platinum Games, Bayonetta 1 and 2 are both some of my favourite video games and I was looking forward greatly to this title and bought it day one. Unfortunately I think as far as gameplay goes they dropped the ball on this one.

The combat for starters does not have the button combination or delayed input combos seen in games like Bayonetta or Devil May Cry, instead they follow simple hit strings that remain the same, you can combine the inputs for example X, X, Y, X but changing the button input used will simply reset your string so X(1), X(2), Y(1), X(1). Obviously this leads to a lack of depth in basic combos and what they seemed to try to do was give you 2 weapon loadouts and allow you to switch weapons on the fly. Unfortunately the combat still ends up feeling incredibly limiting because you still have at most 4 different attack strings on your load out and that is assuming you even enjoy using the other weapons. The game also has some version of Platinums love of dodge mechanics but I feel this is the weakest yet although admitedly I have not played TMNT. You dodge and can do either an AOE hitting launcher or a large damaging attack, the problem is you already have a launcher with back input + respective weapon attack. Never has dodging felt less rewarding and enjoyable, in Bayonetta Bayonetta says some cheeky quip leading to everything slowing down and you get to relentlessly attack your opponent.

The enemy AI is horrible, not much else to say about that.

The open world is completely bland (which fits the tone of the game to be fair) and unnecessary, it feels like another video game that tacked on an open world because every other video game was doing it. An episodic or stage based game would be far better and instead of crafting a huge world with random sidequests and not much else in it they could have put that development time towards making the combat (the most important part of a Platinum game IMO) more interesting.

The sound design is completely insane, the voice acting is incredible and the music some of the best I have heard in a video game which I still listen to months after release.

The story is the best part, I don't want to give anything away because without the story there is very little to justify the games cost but it is as good as they say although it does take a very long time to ramp up, to the point where upon completing the game, twice, you still won't be at the interesting parts of the plot.

I am not sure if I can recommend the game based on the story alone, however, this is ultimately a video game and people have a certain expectation when it comes to Platinum Games and their combat. However I also understand there are Nier fans who already had a game with terrible gameplay/combat and didn't care and also mostly want to see the conclusion. Ultimately though I am not a fan of the original Nier and so I can only speak for myself and players like me. Avoid this game, watch a playthrough or story summary on Youtube.

Oh I forgot, it is a bad port and Square promised to fix some of the issues a week or two after release. It is now the 26th of June and no patch has arrived but they sure as hell released the DLC on time, lol.

This game is horrible. The combat system is a bore, the wannabe shoot-em-up mechanics do little to improve that. Random battles are a dated mechanic and pop up far too frequently, the dialogue is unfunny save a certain moment at the very beginning of the game. Boring "puzzles" if you can call them that, considering the games graphic style it looks quite nice though, I will give it that.

Solid game, I recommend this to everyone. Also it isn't Undertale so how can you go wrong lets be honest. Undertale sucks.
