It's Risk of Rain 1 but prettier and with quite a few additions. Be warned though that the difficulty has been cranked up like crazy, so don't get surprised if you get wrecked more often than not. Fortunately they have added individual damage scaling as an option on top of the RoR difficulties, so don't be afraid to tune it down if it's how you prefer to enjoy it.

All in all, a worthy remake of a timeless classic accompanied by the hauntingly beautiful tunes of the ridiculously talented Christodoulou.

Probably the best successor to diablo 2 you could find these days. The developers, Grinding Gear Games, have also proven to be one of the most attentive company when it comes to play feedback and player concerns, solving a LOT of the game's shortcomings in the last 2 years.

And now that they have effectively eliminated the "play the same content on 3 diffirent difficulties" vestige from hack and slash games and with an actual tutorial system it's a great time to pick it up if you were ever interested.

Early Access Review
Seems to me people do not understand exactly how game development happens and that Tripwire did not communicate properly.

As it stands, the game lacks a lot of content but is otherwise quite complete, especially art-wise. It is safe to assume that all the content that have not been released yet are already finished or at least at a very advanced stage. Instead of laying off most of their art team, they are using them to create microtransactions that are ENTIRELY OPTIONAL AND DO NOT AFFECT GAMEPLAY IN THE SLIGHTEST.

Pros:
Great gunplay with great feel
Squad based horde gameplay
Interesting perk system, an improvement from the first
In depth melee system
Great graphical prowess
PERMANENT GORE

Cons:
Some performance issues
Lack of content at the moment, few perks, maps and only one boss
Slight perk imbalances
