+rep My grandmother had Alzheimers - and towards the end it was really surreal. My parents would freak out if she couldn't remember something, and I didn't feel that was the right way to handle things. I went to visit her by myself (my last time seeing her), and she thought the nursing home she was in was a school, and that the bell would ring soon and she needed to get back to class. She would ask about her parents (she was 100 years old, so they were LONG gone). She didn't know who I was, but she said I felt like a sister, so some part of her knew that we were related. It was a little heartbreaking, but I just played along and said I'd see her after school and to have a fun day. There's really not much else that can be done when someone's mind is so far gone.
