Tough Grand Theft Auto III wasn't the first open-world game , it was the first one to introduce a fully interactive 3D city , wich you can explore at your leisure , introducing a living world in wich things happen whitout your intervention .
That along whit great gameplay , a good storyline and a amazing soundtrack , make this a must-have game to any gamer collection .
Also note that this game runs whitout any problem on Windows 7 / 8 .
Score : 9 / 10 ( amazing )

I dun think they claimed to be the first though. Just that they had a huge impact on open world games. Which they did with this one. :)

I think Ultima was one of the first open world games released. It was from the early 80's I believe
