Early Access Review
"Please describe what you liked or disliked about this game and whether you recommend it to others.

Hell no.
Don't bother touching this until it's out of early access.

You are best off saving yourself for a quality product then that is optimised then be hailed abuse by fanboys that think its okay to accept lies. This is another DayZ. Good luck convincing the loyalists otherwise.

tldr: I'll love to be wrong about this series, and i'll gladly admit im wrong if they dare to prove I am.

TLDR: Build quality is second rate, technology is interesting, software is a mixed bag. you can and will have fun with this controller after extensive tweaking and learning. I would not recommend the controller in it's current build quality state, BUT, if you have some disposable income and want to go explore, go ahead.

Very early Initial Impression as of 11 March 2016
Delivery: Ordered on the 2nd March 2016 - Recieved: 8th March 2016 - Expected delivery between 4/8 days so great delivery overall.

Build Quality

The controller just feels like it could break easily. It's like a choice between an official xbox controller to some third party controller where the steam controller is the third party quality, It's lacking that human quality to ensure that every piece of the product is the best it can be. the shell doesn't feel like it's connected properly or screwed in tight enough, there is a gap that I feel between the top and bottom shell around the whole controller that doesn't feel flush, honestly, with a little effort you could probably cut yourself on it.

The pads feel nice to the touch but again, the quality of them just look dodgy. On my controller there is a embelishment of the left pad on the top where it looks like the pads coating hasn't been applied correctly e.g. http://www.technodabbler.com/content/images/2015/12/DPP_0008.JPG]Picture Example Look at the right at the top left of it. These kind of defects seem to be common.

The buttons feel okay, they aren't anything special but not bad either, maybe on the slightly small side and placement questionable. especially the Y and B button being to close to the right pad but I'll get to that later. The triggers feel great but I feel they are slightly small, like the travel distance just isn't enough, the "second trigger click" is sublime, brilliant feature. The analogue stick again feels slightly on the shallow side, so sensitivity isn't quite as fine tuned as you'll want it to be. The back paddles are great, but the build and placement of them directly onto the removable cover is a bit awkward, the plastic feels rigid enough but the whole back plate doesn't ooze confidence. I won't complain about the battery compartment, That's just some weird over engineering going on there, but hey, it works and feels sturdy.

The haptic feedback, This is one part I expected it to shine over my cheap huawei phones haptics, but for some reason, they just don't feel right in some instances they work great and others fall flat. you could compare it to what an audiophole would say about flat tinny cans over a quality set of cans. It does the job for the time being.

Right that's enough of the build quality for now, add amendments if I feel I missed anything important.

Gaming

Any game built with controllers first in mind: Pretty much any controller based game will feel right at home with the additional influence of gyro if you'll like to use it the lack of a second analogue stick makes the transition slightly harder to grasp but not by much, you can tweak the settings, but it can be a chore, but that's where the user made configs come in handy. your game resolution may differ from the user so take that into consideration and tweak accordingly.

Racing: If you can race with a controller, you can race with this controller, there is barely any difference other then he addition of using gyro if you want to.

RTS: No idea yet, Havent been brave enough to attempt yet, but if its as awkward as using the desktop, It won't be pretty until vast amount of more experience and learning has been done.

FPS: This is a mixed bag, If I was to say that a controller was a 2/10 and a mouse was a 10/10 I'll say that the steam controller is a 5/10. you'll spend a lot of time tweaking the controller to get the satisfactory results you want, and then there is the learning curve, do you keep the trackball effect, do you combine the gyro aiming (Got to admit, that is pretty awesome for precise movements) do you assign aiming and shooting to the trigger and the "second trigger click"? That's all down to you, I went with attempting to combine them all and found the trackball to be quite annoying so had to tweak that a bit. The trigger aiming and shooting is a mixed bag, If there was more travel distance between the trigger and second trigger click I think it would of been fine but in its current state you have to be actively aware of how far you are pressing on the trigger which just takes away from the experience.

Right, that's a wrap for now. Will update this more and then in a month or quarter of a year will add upon this.

In game FPS counter says it's running at 120+ fps, game feels like 45 with drops to 20 every 3 seconds.

Pros: It's COD so you know exactly what you are going to get.
Cons: It's COD so you know exactly what you are going to get.

Wall running feels awkward, would be nice if it felt a bit more fluid and kept the momentum. Can't really say much about anything else because it's pretty much expected what there is in the game.

Conclusion: They have time to rectify various things to make this a decent entry in the series, but lets be honest, can they really do any worse then Ghosts, AW?

Now that the early problems have gone here is an update for people who have already played DD.

Imagine the original formula of DD revamped
Here is what to expec

1) Currency is now Coins instead of mana
2) Crafting system is done with blue prints and items that you find within game
3) Chests are now for individual players, instead of people fighting over chests to build stuff every person sees there own instance of chests.
4) Items are now only visible to a player, each player will only see items that have specifically dropped for them
5) You can get eggs which do hatch into pets, doesnt take that long to hatch them either.
6) Coins can be gained quite easily.
7) The monetisation shop isn't as agressive as people are making it out to be, they are only for emotes so far. If they sell costumes from the DLC that we bought in DD1 then be very vocal about it.
8) Gear is now visible.

The current problem so far is server stability, it feels like a train wreck lag is more prone then before and it all feels rushed. The GUI needs some work, the side bar stuff is fine but the party notifications and what not is just a simple ugly white popup screen that might as well have comic sans on it.

The cross platform stuff is going to possibly get on a lot of peoples nerves, firstly they implemented the download system soley to cater to mobile/cell/tablet users and secondly I can forsee dropouts occuring left right and centre. What I do like is the ability to play in the browser just incase you have one of those off days where steam is having a tantrum. just to note: you also have to buy the android/ipad? versions . I dont know why they just didn't make it free and use the login system to verify if they have a valid license.

Original Early Impression

Early Impression:

This is by no means a final representation of the final product. Just an initial reaction.

1) Logged in
2) Downloaded Playverse
3) Checked the options (All was semi decent here, not great but there was sliders with no numerical value but that doesn't bother me)
4) Added a friend to playverse
5) Eventually got into the same tavern
6) Tavern was in very low textures, I've seen better minecraft texture packs (Yes you are warned about this when loading into the tavern) Had to wait a while for the textures to download.
7) Not all the textures downloaded and now stuck attempting to download some "Movie: The New Generation" infinity back to 0% random loop that never exceeds 10%
8) Started up a game, Waiting in queue
9) Started singing in chat "99 bottles of beer on the wall" With a fellow welcoming random player
10) someone interupted the song.
11) 45 mins later decided to jump out of the game as I refused wait any longer.

Im giving this a thumbs up due to knowing that the core game is already solid.
I have a few issues on if I'll be asked to purchase DLC that I've already purchsed and wether this stupid download system will at least be optional. I get it, some people are impatient, They are also the same kind of people who will give negative feedback due to its obvious side effects (Low res textures)

Will update this as time progresses. I bought this game on the soul purpose to help fund DD2, that's how I am treating this.

Edit 1: Playverse 2.0 Update: I am now downloading the files, from the start, again. Wasn't this issue resolved with binary updates in DD1? (Can't remeber the exact terminology used)

Not for the faint hearted but definetly a game where you will get a sense of an achievement and pride when things go well.
