I've had a lot of fun with this game. It has the best shooter mechanics of any multiplayer shooter out there, the legends are fun to use, and the game itself is fairly balanced.

However, as time went on, while the game itself was balanced - The players and the way they interact with the game are not.

- High skill players play comparatively more often than casual players, and thus make up a disproportionate amount of active players at any given time. Rather than vaguely group these players together, they are dumped into the same matches as newbies who've just come off their initiation match and casual veterans who just want to play for fun. This is about casual games (public, unranked matches), which are supposed to be played for fun, however since the stats count many higher skill players use these to pad out their stats instead of playing the (currently rather broken) ranked mode.

- Auto-aim is vastly overtuned for this game. You can play with mouse and keyboard, or you can play with controller. Since controller is considered to be the inferior input method, it receives some measure of auto-aim, even on PC. If you play mouse and keyboard and are not very good at shooters, you will be utterly destroyed.

- Adding to this, many exploits exist to apply auto-aim to mouse and keyboard, and there's even a sizeable market of hardware manufacturers which sell literal cheating hardware for controller players. None of this has been addressed for a long, long time by the developers.

- Other game modes (as in: non-BR modes) are not teambalanced. Usually, in a teambased game the teams are roughly balanced according to skill, like in for example CS or CoD lobbies where if one team is too good, the players are redistributed across the teams. This does not happen in Apex, where it often happens that one team gets all the good players and the other team gets shafted. There is no balancing or redistribution before or during a game, causing many games to be very one-sided stomps as players on the losing team quickly recognize the situation and simply leave the game, as there is no chance the situation will change.

- If you don't have people you can regularly play with, you will "solo queue" into games and be matched with random other people. Many of them drop and rush into unwinnable situations solo, and only *then* will they start talking on their mics by insulting the other two who decided to drop somewhere safer. The first issue is also exacerbated by this: Solo queue is not seperate from team queue, so you will be matched with 2 other random players of widely varying skill in the same game where a team (or 2, or 3) of 3 semi-pros is wrecking the server.

- You can get banned for a minor infraction, and these bans may affect all games on your EA account, making them inaccessible. EA has outsourced their worldwide support almost entirely to Indian callcenters, which are not just inadequate, but oftentimes outright hostile to customers, especially if you are banned, regardless if it was deserved or not.

Respawn does not seem to be interested in changing this, nor does the community at large seem to be interested in it either. I've held out hope for quite some time, but lately i've just had to give up. It's not an issue of having good or bad days either: When you can count the amount of good days in the past 6 months on one hand, it's time to drop it and spend your free time on something that's actually fun to do.

I don't understand why so many people consider hitting their head against a brick wall.

Give this game a go, but understand that after you leave the newbie matches, frustration will be the only thing you feel when playing it.

It's too easy to call it a souls-like, because it kind of isn't: It has more similarities to Diablo, or other ARPG's, than it does to any of From Software's games, so forget any of that for now.

Get this game if:
- You want to spend a few hours on character creation (totally optional, but rad),
- You want an extremely in-depth combat system which rivals some fighting games.
- You want balls to the wall character customization, both in looks and mechanically.

The game's combat shines. There's 10 weapons, each with 3 stances, each with a dozen or two moves (most of which you unlock through skill trees), all of which can be combo'd together in various ways. It sounds more intimidating than it actually is: It's not complexity for complexity's sake, even though it might seem to be at first glance. Everything meshes together more and more as the game progresses.

The game's loot is also highly customizable, however this might be seen as a negative to some. There's a LOT of loot to go through in this game - I personally see it as a plus in this context, but some may see it as a negative.

The character customization is ace, offering exactly the right amount of options to let you do what you want without overwhelming you with details which don't make sense. It's incredibly satisfying to see your custom character in the cutscenes in this game, where even facial animation just looks great on any abomination you can come up with. It's a rather underrated feature in my opinion, on a technical level.

Don't get this game if:
- You strongly dislike inventory management,
- You want an open and interconnected world to explore.

Inventory management and lootsplosions are a thing. While the cap is at 600 items, which will take a while to fill, you do want to either melt down or sell some items, craft others, upgrade these and modify those: It can get overwhelming if you just want to smash demon face. Personally i don't mind, as it feeds into the customization, but some people may find this very frustrating to deal with.

This game does *not* feature an open world: Prepare for lots of loading screens and menus. Don't go into this expecting a leisurely stroll through a large interconnected world to explore as you see fit. The level design of individual levels is great however, though some parts get reused a few times for smaller side missions.

Otherwise: Graphics are technically not the best, but they're very well done (especially NPC faces are quite believable or even realistic), and the art direction is top notch: Everything looks extremely consistent. Aside from some isolated areas in some levels (heavy grass popin or very bland outer boundaries) it's really well done.

Sound is simply great. You learn to appreciate the many audio cues for combat by ear, and the game has some very subtle audio design to help you be aware of your surroundings. The music can be an earwurm: The first two hub areas have an extremely soothing ambience which can easily get stuck in your ears.

For the rest: Well, prepare to die, a lot. But weirdly, dying in this game never feels frustrating, at least not after you've figured out some of its nuances, which can admittedly be frustratingly hard to figure out when you go in blind.

Oh, and unlike some other games in the soulslike genre (but just like other ARPG's) you can co-op this game with up to two friends from start to finish, no need for cumbersome summoning systems :)

The core of the game is good. Quite good, even. The gunplay is extremely solid and most of the guns are fun to handle and shoot.

What isn't good is the netcode. Getting shot through walls is the norm, not the exception, as the game tries to catch up.

Having a bad connection is actually a *good* thing since it makes you nigh unkillable, but you can hit other people just fine.

Some of the maps have clearly been designed with a very specific gamemode in mind, but *all* gamemodes are forced on *all* maps, whether it actually works or not. Haruyama and Broadcast for example are huge maps specifically made for this games BR mode, but they are in the map pool for 3 other gamemodes as well where they simply do not work *at all*.

Others, like Cruise and Titan, inexplicable have a CTF mode, despite having been specifically made with TDM in mind - They are far too small to actually be playable.

The cash shop is confusing and nonsensical. Many weapons and outfit options state you can buy them for a specific amount of ingame obtainable currency, however they are actually locked behind lootboxes or paid packages, both of which are insanely overpriced for what you actually get. Luckily there is absolutely zero reason to spend any money on this game as there is no mechanical benefit to anything in the cash shop.

But the biggest sin of all: The game has no matchmaking. Whatsoever.

It has matchmaking in the sense that it puts you in a lobby with whoever happens to be looking for a game at the same time, but there is zero team balancing, as it sorts the 6v6 teams completely at random. The game happily puts 6 complete newbies up against 6 veterans or pros. It's almost completely unusable, and across ~600 matches played i've had maybe a couple dozen where it was actually close and fun. The rest were completely onesided stomps from either side.

It's simply not fun to actually play this game with or against other people unless you play in the extremely, astronomically tiny clan wars scene, where only the netcode is everyone's greatest enemy.

The worst thing is, the developer knows about this, but refuses to fix it. They've had a dedicated report channel on their discord 'to investigate bad matchups' but do absolutely nothing with it. People have been complaining for months, but they can't be bothered to even just balance teams by kd ratio or anything whatsoever until they get a more robust system going. Literally anything would be better than nothing, but nothing is what we get.

The matchmaking and netcode completely ruin the potential of this game. If the first didn't already scare prospective players off, the second certainly will. However, i get the strong feeling that the developer simply doesn't care and is content to sell lootboxes with minimal maintenance, and is already working on a new game.

If the developers want to convince me otherwise, they need to fix matchmaking first and foremost, and then make the netcode their top priority. Releasing bad skins and bad versions of existing maps - Not to mention the lootbox odds are beyond horrible and inspire zero confidence of actually spending real money on them - Isn't enough to tide anyone over, and it won't be long until even the most hardcore players are going to call it quits.

It's so sad. This game had massive potential, but such basic issues just keep being ignored for years on end.

I don't think i can say more about the game that Happy Souls didn't already.

Sure, it has its flaws. The world is not as fleshed out as the first game, and it doesn't look as good as the third. Some areas feel far too game-y. There's less truly memorable bosses, and some say that it's 'bad' because it's not as hard as the other games. Also, adaptability can go to hell.

However, It still carries the gloom of Dark Souls without being utterly oppressive, and in my eyes it's by far the most satisfying game of the trilogy to play with friends.

Almost every single weapon and playstyle is viable to some degree: Even dual wielding shields! The game encourages you to experiment with whatever you want, and this feels liberating compared to the other games, where balance is sometimes hard to find, and some playstyles are just vastly superior to others.

This would be a good game to try if you really want to play a Souls game, but don't really like how edgy the other Soulsborne games are.

The included OST's makes the purchase worth it, *if* and only if you like it. Give it a listen on YT. It includes the all OST's from XG1 up to XGRA, including both versions of XG2 (N64 and PC).

The game itself? Not worth the hassle. Despite it supporting controllers in the menu it just doesn't work with them, forcing you to use keyboards in most cases. There's no analog steering, which makes it far too difficult to play - This was already the case in the original PC port (which is sitting on my shelf!). Huge missed opportunity to say the least.

The only thing that was actually ported was the ability to start the game on modern systems. Despite that there's still a lot of bugs: Menu's use the wrong zoom levels in certain instances, and Throwback didn't even bother trying to upscale some of the textures. Mind you, this game was meant to be played at 640x480 back in the day and even then it didn't really look all that good compared to some of the contemporaries.

XG2 is sorta-kinda the black sheep of the series, gameplay wise. That black sheep got ported to the PC 20 years ago, and that port got a small tweak to make it work on modern systems. Do not expect anything but a horrible, broken mess. This is not a HD remaster. Even at the currently discounted price, unless you're overflowing with nostalgia for the OST, don't bother with this game until Throwback puts a bit more effort into it to get it playable to at least the original N64 version's level.

This game was pretty awesome before the patch. A subtle combination of Counterstrike's and CoD's multiplayer gameplay, with an added twist of the character abilities.

After the recent patch it turned into a game that desperately wants to be a combination of Overwatch and Titanfall 2. The developer or publisher seems to have felt that they had to completely change the game in order to make it more popular, instead of simply fixing the small issues and refining the excellent game that was already there.

I feel robbed. The game i started falling in love with simply dissappeared into nothing. This new game we got, disguised by a 'content patch', is nothing like the one before it. It feels like a cheap rehash of other games, rather than building on them and refining its own niche.

This honestly feels like the SWG NGE in ye olden days. It feels like the dev/publisher want to cash in on other games' popularity rather than improve and refine what they got, losing veteran players in the process and failing to appeal to new ones because there are other games which do it better. Unless they man up and revert (most) of the changes, especially the insane (in a bad way) weapon restrictions and wildly imbalanced character stats and abilities (being able to spam them pretty much non-stop is *bad* mmkay), i don't see a very rosy future for this game.

This game is pretty much unlike anything i've ever played before.

At it's core, it's a (relatively) linear first person platformer, though with very little platforming. There are a few puzzles, but there's only one that requires any real thought. It's a mostly monochromatic game, lots of blacks and whites with one other color thrown in as a theme every so often.

The checkpoints are weirdly paced. Some sections are just badly designed. Others induce epilepsy even in non-epileptic people. The game is incredibly short and the ending is unsatisfying.

Despite all this, i can only recommend it.

The game exudes an atmosphere like no other, you need to experience it for yourself to believe it. The overall art design draws you in and the astonishing music keeps you firmly entrenched in this strange, vast world. The design is such that you are not questioning the developer on the strangeness of the levels, but the makers of the world itself - It really draws you in that much.

There is a sense of wonder to this game that i haven't seen before in 20 years of gaming. Antichamber comes close, but its experience is far more 'meta', where the game feels like a game rather than a world. In Naissancee, you want to know who built this place and what it's for. You want to see if you can get over there, you wonder what's in that room across the chasm, it edges you forward purely by making you want to see what this world will offer up next.

In the third quarter of the game, things get a little weird. The segue into this section doesn't really flow all that well, pulling you out of the experience for just a little bit. It does pick up again in a wonderful section where the game simply offers up gorgeous views for you to explore, untill you decide to continue.

The ending however is the only real letdown of the game. The rest is such an artistic accomplishment simply in its unpretentiousness (if that is a word) while still being grand and evocative, whereas the ending makes a 180 into a snooty pretentious cliffhanger.

Still, despite all its faults, Naissancee is a game you simply need to have played at least once. I think it's very much worth the price of admission, though it's understandable that this game feels very risky - At least get it when it's on sale. :)
