It's not perfect and it has it's flaws, but once you work with it's quite fun in my opinion.
It does a lot of things a bit less as good (and easier) than it's competitors for example Hollow Knight and Dead Cells. But despite that I can still recommend it.

There isn't that much variant in enemies and levels are quite straightforward/linear without really any open world, so if you're looking for that this might not be for you.

If necessary you can also farm stuff, although I mostly didn't. Different weapons, stats on weapons, swappable/upgradeable abilities and upgradeable weapons (in town).

Finished in 12.5 hours explored 100%, but skipped currently the challenges.

Early Access Review
Bugfix Update 2024/06/27: It seems they released a few bugfixes (none of which I've mentioned unfortunately) and are apparently still working on stuff, although slow it doesn't seem abandoned at least, let's hope the big content update they're working on has even more fixes. :) [End message about update]

I'm conflicted, the gameplay is fun, but at the same time there are still a few bugs, unless you can get this cheap I unfortunately can't recommend this game unless stuff will be fixed (might be changed in the future if some day updates will come out, if you take a look on steamdb the latest 'change' has been in a test branch from a month ago, stable branch 4 months ago).

There are still a few annoying bugs (see down here) and game isn't fully translated for english, development seem insanely slow, or you could even say abandoned, on one side I heard they're rebuilding the game, on the other hand I hear it's abandoned.

Besides that, the smaller things like the English text most of the time doesn't seem to fit the textboxes and obstruct certain text like explanations/descriptions, also translation seems quite bad, but I could live with that.

Regarding the bugs:
- while in the passive upgrades shop (like more hp, extra revives etc), if you alt+tab in this specific window the game will become stuck and you need to restart the game.

- When I finished the game I unlocked a new town piece, after the cinematic, I quit. When I started the next day that specific part in the town was not unlocked anymore and after beating game again it still didn't unlock, so it seems my save currently is broken and I can't get that town part anymore.

- If you press 'Talk' too fast with a char, you could create multiple instances of talking with a specific characters and multiple textboxes start to overlap.

- One time I even broke interacting as a whole and needed to restart the game (happened only once so far tho, and dunno how)

It seems not that game breaking, but it kind of breaks the immersion. I hope some issues would still be addressed because the gameplay is quite fun. And if there will be a future update that fixes stuff I'll reconsider my recommendation.

Game looked fun and bought it on sale without much expectations. After finishing the game 100% on original mode after 5 hours of playing I can say really enjoyed it (had some frustrating moments too).

The art style was already appealing to me, small cinematics were also cool, the controls were quite tight and didn't expect the game would put up a challenge sometimes. The auto-scroller parts were... a bit annoying sometimes and felt I was being bamboozled by certain things.

What I also didn't expect is that you can collect the bonuses and can leave the map just fine, so you didn't need to completely need to do the level again.

There are 2 game modes, Original and Casual.
Original is how it's meant to be played, casual adds more hearts and waypoints, there's nothing wrong using/switching to casual mode if you think it's too difficult :)

If you love "difficult" platformers I can say this is a hidden gem...

Game is decent but has a few quirks.
For me it started when I opened the game, it immediately opened my SteamVR and the main menu went completely out of place, when trying to only quit SteamVR the game also quit so couldn't do anything about it except for completely plugging out my Vive which I didn't do, alt+enter fixed at least to a normal resolution (but didn't go in fullscreen though) almost couldn't click on anything so I just skipped to do some settings in the main menu and just started the game.

After playing some time I noticed sometimes blocks go through me/push me to the side when they should you launch you from front/side, apparently this happens when you jump and let it hit you.

When I was at the firewall section you must use walls to keep the doors open, but the firewall sometimes just clip through the regular wall and still completely blocks the way to go inside.

Another thing I found, but isn't really game breaking or anything. When you look to the ground and turn I noticed your screen won't stay in place where you are aiming at but you are rotating around it (sorry don't really know how to explain this).

So... I'll keep it short, now the good things:
  • Puzzles/Timed puzzles
  • Game looks good but the nice thing is that you can clearly see what are platforms and what you can use (somewhat what Mirrors Edge used with a lot of white and red parts)
  • Checkpoints
  • Free

Overall fun short game!

Heroes of Hammerwatch is still a nice game to play, but it somewhat lacks the stuff that made Hammerwatch fun to play IMO.

Playing after 30 hours: So i've been playing this game for a while now and I must say, the game grew onto me. The diversity in levels, RNG, bosses, skills, items and no end to NG(x), it's a lot of fun, way more fun then I first thought it would be.
10/10

EDIT: Came back to re-edit my review finally after "playing" 1942 hours. Played tons, but also created a few mods which also took a lot of my hours, nonetheless I had fun all the way and till this day, it's my still favorite game and community. Can't wait for HW2.

For people that are recently joining or reading the reviews and reading they should switch to "net_testing" branch, BACK UP YOUR SAVES, PLEASE.
This "new" branch isn't backwards compatible with the normal versions due to a lot of changes.
If you have connection issues try out first "public_testing", that one is backwards compatible, as a last resort you can still try out net_testing.
Not relevant anymore, game has been updated with the latest changes.

Early Access Review
I played the free demo, and had alot of fun with that alone. So I bought the game. If you're not sure if you like this game, I recommend trying out the demo first.

I was thinking this game would be pretty easy since I played a lot of those games, I was wrong. Sometimes the (mini)bosses are really hard and I died a lot of times, and sometimes I was puzzled looking at the puzzles. I don't mind a challenge with trial and error so I had a lot of fun with this.

The gameplay is really smooth, a really, REALLY, big skill tree, which is not complete yet, but the developers will get there in time :)
Although in the beginning a few quests were quite boring, they get more fun when you get further into the game.
So far I recommend this game even in this early access state. You won't regret it!

I've paid way more for games which were less fun then this, the pixel art is nice and teleport like gameplay are really fun, not alot of unique monsters, and the game is also rather short, but that didn't bother me. Especially for this price I would call it a hidden gem.

Bought this game in sale, for 0.09 Euro-cent, I must say I cannot complain.
I finished the Normal and the Hard-Mode playthrough.

The game was quite fun to play, although the graphics are quite basic and not really something special.
Definitly recommended for people who like a challenge.

Just for the 9 cents I give it a 10/10
