A truly spectacular game that is a shining gem of the RPG genre...

Many reviews for this game start off that way, and it may seem like hype, but it is well deserved. No other game I have played has had such deep, complex characters brought to life through incredible voice acting and combined with an enthralling, far-reaching story, intricate combat system, and beautiful environment. I have a hard time expressing just how much this game stands out among any other RPG game I have played.

Story:
I initially played the Witcher 2, which I bought on a Steam sale a couple years before Witcher 3 was released. I pretty quickly fell in love with the characters and boarded the hype train for Witcher 3. The Witcher 2 is a great game, but the Witcher 3 builds on every aspect: the Witcher 3 improves the combat system, crafts a dynamic story with many branches, and creates an open-world environment that allows the player to really appreciate the expansive, beautiful world of the Witcher.

With regard to the strength of the Witcher 3's storytelling, it is unrivaled in games of this kind. I was at first hesitant to play an RPG with a character already set for me, since isn't the point of an RPG to create your own character and set your own path? Past games with a set playable character have always been cookie-cutter and cliché, but CDPR has discovered the secret to making an immersive game. By using a predetermined character, they can reach incredible depths of character and story development that aren't possible with a custom character. However, the morally-gray Geralt of Rivia provides a great variety for players. The player can decide how they want to play, both with respect to their decisions (which actually have an effect on the world around them) and their combat style. Want to just enjoy the story and beat monsters up? Select the easiest difficulty setting and enjoy the ride. Want to enjoy the story, but also feel first-hand the brutality of the world? Select "Death March" and get ready for a real challenge. The story and voice acting will take you on an emotional journey of incredible proportions.

Combat:
The combat system is quite intricate, especially with the two, large DLCs. There are many different directions for builds and they can easily be changed throughout the game (with a little of your gold from monster slaying if you want a total change). With a wide selection of tactics using swords, signs (magic), alchemy (bombs, potions, and oils), and a crossbow, the player is left with many ways to create their favorite combat style.

Graphics:
Simply put, this game is beautiful. If you really want to appreciate the beauty of this game, look through screenshots that players have posted (check /r/witcher). Make sure that you can run the game, since I have some friends with lower-end computers that cannot. If you can, there are also many mods to further improve the graphics.

Company:
CD Projekt Red is a fantastic company that listens to its players and attempts to bring the gaming industry away from the greed many companies exhibit. How many companies provide 16 free DLC's to players when the game first comes out? They may be small, but almost every game I see has similar content selling for $0.99 or $1.99 EACH. The two larger DLC's bring about 50 hours of additional content, and while I haven't had the chance to fully experience them yet, I am confident the quality will be similar to the rest of the game. CD Projekt Red gives a model that will hopefully return the gaming industry to one centered around the players, rather than the money.

Aftermath:
I finished this game and immediately was left wanting more. I've read the first two books of the series (very well-written, and I highly recommend it if you want to learn more about the history of the characters) and plan to play the first game after I finish the rest. The intricacy of this game and immense amount of content gives incredible replayability for a price that is unmatched. Speaking of which, time to start my second journey...
