Pros:
-Simple with enough variety to keep you engaged.
-Got a solid 15 hours game play over 2 days with a friend.
-Final boss was a fun challenge.
-Satisfies that retro-style game itch

Cons:
-Might just be me but the dialog seemed excessive.

NOTE: At the time of this review the game version is exactly V.1.1.1-ae272, and I paid $6.99 for this game.

The good:
1) This game is fun to play with a friend(s) for the price.
2) The graphics are satisfying.
3) Hit tracking between champion and enemy feels accurate.
4) The over all game play is engaging and steady.
5) The breaks between missions are timed well so you can enjoy just mowing through waves of enemies, getting in some extra upgrades between objectives. There is still a little optimization to be done here but it is enjoyable in its current state.
6) The diversity of weapons, upgrades, characters, and customization is reasonable (for the price).
7) The game runs smoothly. Though I did fall through the map a couple times I was re-spawned back quickly so I was able to keep going with very little interruption. I was born in 1981. I've played a LOT of video games. Many of those when they were early versions with a lot of bugs, so I feel this game is running pretty well for a price of $7.

The bad:
1) It has the potential to be quite a bit more successful but it doesn't have the legs a game like Vampire Survivors had. Marketing wise it lacks visibility. I found this game as a random browse, honestly. You know.. when you're completely sick of everything else in your library so you just start digging into random stuff. This is one of those finds. Its a gem with a lot of potential but little financial support and it has a huge flaw which I detail next:

2) This game needs optimized for multiplayer and it kinda pisses me off how they handle the problem. Me and my buddy played this game for roughly 6 hours. In that time the game de-synced at least once an hour, separating us into our own games, replacing us with a bot. We get that there are bugs, so we were patient each time and started ALL OVER again. The disconnection usually occurred after we were well into a run. Kind of like getting right to a climax and then it gets taken away from you before you get to see the ending. Currently, and I could punch someone in the face for not doing this, the game gives you ABSOLUTELY NO INDICATION THIS HAS HAPPENED!!! WHAT THE F game developers!? Are you serious?! Did NOBODY over there think about this?! You couldn't have at least encoded a message that tells the players there has been a disconnection?! What happens instead is the game replaces your partner with a bot. A mentally handicapped bot. This is the only thing that indicates to you that you've been disconnected from each other. Additionally, it's not like you can just get back together in the game. You're screwed on your progress as a team at that point. You just get to play the rest of the game out with a bot or quit and start all over again by creating a new game with your friend(s).

W T F. Fix it so I have a desire to finish the game please.

Early Access Review
Had this game for several hours, stuck on waiting to load into servers. Sad the developers did not test this properly prior to release.

This game is a usual iteration of the Metal Slug series; run, jump, and gun. Worth a go and very intense especially on the harder settings. Large numbers of animations and bullets can be overwhelming when playing 2 player mode causing you to become confused at your player location on screen, resulting in death. I've always been a fan of the Metal Slug games though so as usual this gets a thumbs up.
